Rising Eagles Week 2 Self Control
Building Grit, Self-Control & Integrity

Dear Audubon Families,
We are excited to continue our family learning series, Rising Eagles: Building Grit, Self-Control, & Integrity. Through this series, our goal is to partner with families to help students better understand their emotions, develop perseverance, and strengthen decision-making skills.
This week our focus is SELF-CONTROL—the ability to pause, think, and make safe choices even when emotions are strong. When children learn how their brain reacts during frustration or anger, they can begin to recognize those feelings and practice strategies to calm down before responding. Building self-control is an important part of social-emotional learning (SEL) and helps students succeed both in school and in life.
During Week 2, families will explore:
-
How the brain reacts when emotions become strong
-
The role of the Upstairs Brain (thinking brain) and Downstairs Brain (feeling brain) during moments of frustration
-
How the Yellow and Red Zones of Regulation help us recognize when we need strategies to calm our bodies and return to the Green Zone
You will watch a short video and story together, complete a quick Blooket review, and participate in a simple family activity to help identify and practice regulation strategies.
Earning Points for Your Family Activity Book
Students can earn a special activity book by participating in the series. To receive the book, families need to earn 30 total points.
Points can be earned by completing the weekly activities:
-
Blooket completion: 10 points Please make sure to use your first name and last initial so that we can identify you and award your points!
-
Family challenge submission: 10 points
By participating each week, families will easily earn enough points to receive a great family activity book focused on brain science and emotional skills. These books will help students continue practicing what they learn throughout the series.

You cannot reason with a child in the Red Zone. Their "lid is flipped," and the "Smart Part" is literally disconnected. Focus on calming the "Lizard Brain" first.
