Hello DHS Parents and Students,

We want to welcome our families to the 2026-27 school year at Decatur High School. The information included here and in the district newsletter supports your transition into the new school year. We eagerly await the return of our PACK (Purposeful, Accountable, Connected, Kind) students and staff.

Our team worked extremely hard during June and July to prepare for a successful school year. We look forward to opening school smoothly and are ready to support students and staff in the teaching and learning process. Over the next two weeks, we will send updates to support students as they start school. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you need support.

First Day of School

The first day of school is August 3, 2026. All students will be able to enter the building at 8:10 am via the Bus Loop (Commerce Street) and the Attendance Office (McDonough Street) to facilitate secure entry into the building. The Decatur Career Academy doors are for senior entry only. Breakfast will be available at this time. The tardy bell will ring promptly at 8:35 am.

Please remember that only clear or mesh backpacks are permitted in classrooms. Opaque or drawstring bags may not be brought into classrooms, but can be stored in assigned lockers, which will be distributed during the first week of school.

Arrival and dismissal procedures remain in place to prioritize safety. All bus loading and unloading, as well as parent drop-off and pick-up, must occur at the Commerce Drive bus lane. For everyone’s safety, do not use the parking lot at W. Howard Avenue and N. McDonough Street for drop-off or pick-up. Traffic and bus monitors will be present to direct vehicles appropriately.

Sincerely,
Duane Sprull, Ed.D.
Principal

26-27 Schedule - Limited Correction Form

Dear DHS Students and Families,

Welcome back! We are excited for the 26-27 school year!

High school students’ schedules for the 26-27 school year are now available in the Infinite Campus portal. At this time, students and their parents/guardians are able to see the classes students are scheduled into and the periods they will have those classes. We will make teacher assignments viewable soon.

We want to make sure every student has a complete and appropriate schedule before the first day of school on August 3rd. We will not make schedule changes based on a change in course preference or based on teacher preference.

Your schedule will need a correction if you notice any of these issues:

  • Students should see all courses paired together on your schedule. If you see that a course listed for 1st semester is not the same as 2nd semester, please fill out the form. Exceptions are: Health/Personal Fitness, AmGov/Personal Finance, Psych/Sociology, Dual Enrollment courses, and Online courses
  • Student is missing a period or a course is listed more than once
  • Student has a course scheduled, but the student does not have the prerequisite credit (ex. Student is in Spanish 5 but never took/passed Spanish 4)
  • Student is missing a core course (math, science, social studies, or ELA)
  • Student has already taken and passed a scheduled course
  • Student is participating in Dual Enrollment and this is not reflected on the schedule
    • Note regarding Dual Enrollment/Online Learning: A "Dual Enrollment" placeholder will be on the schedule if you are participating in Dual Enrollment or a GAVS course. This placeholder will be changed to the actual course the student is enrolled in within the first month of school.
    • Students enrolling in GaTech courses may not see the "Dual Enrollment" placeholder on their schedule until the end of the month, as we are awaiting GaTech to send us the final report.

If you notice one of the above errors in your schedule, please fill out this form. This form must be completed by NOON on July 27th in order for a review of your submission by the first day of school.

Please refrain from emailing counselors about corrections to your schedule, as doing so slows down our work to address scheduling needs. Counselors have been directed to only look at form responses. Only correction requests submitted through the form will be processed so that we can ensure consistency in our response.

Completion of this form does not guarantee a schedule change. Changes will be considered together by the scheduling team that includes counselors and administrators. Any changes will be communicated by a student's counselor.

Decatur High School Leadership Team (SLT) Elections will take place in August 2026. DHS has two parent 2-year terms expiring in September of this year. These newly elected members' terms will last for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years.

To be eligible for election as a parent representative to the DHS SLT, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. You must be the parent/guardian of a student who is enrolled at DHS when the term begins.
  2. You must not be an employee of City Schools of Decatur.
  3. You must not be an elected or appointed member of another CSD School Leadership Team.

For more information about the School Leadership Team visit this link.

DHS Meet & Greet DHS Meet & Greet

All are invited to the DHS Meet and Greet from 2 pm to 4 pm on Friday, July 31st. Students and their parents and guardians can enter the building through the doors on Commerce Drive or North McDonough to explore the building and walk their schedules. Agnes Scott College has generously offered to allow our families to use their parking deck as overflow for the event, but parking will still be limited. We encourage families to walk if they are able.

New Parent and Guardian Information Session New Parent and Guardian Information Session

We encourage all new families to attend the New Parent and Guardian Information Session on Saturday, August 8, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. This event is designed to provide guidance, resources, and answers to help parents and guardians support their student’s transition into the school year.

Safety and Security Update Safety and Security Update

For the upcoming school year we will continue to prioritize the safety and security of the students and staff. DHS will continue to have three school security associates (SSA) and an onsite school resource officer. Our SSAs are Mr. Sharrod Leverett, Ms. Nina King, and Mr. Jerome Tillery. Officer Harge will continue to serve as the school resource officer. We will dedicate a separate communication before school that focuses solely on Safety and Security protocols for building entry to include:

  • Student Arrival: Required entry points and procedures for all students through the weapons detection system.

  • Building Hours: Times for student arrival and visitor access, including which entrances to use

  • Visitor Management System: How we’ll check in and monitor visitors

  • Daily Security: Expectations for keeping our building safe throughout the day

  • Code of Conduct: What happens if security procedures aren’t followed

Personal Electronics Protocol Personal Electronics Protocol

Please see our Personal Electronics Protocol (devices and cell phones). This protocol remains largely unchanged from the 2025-26 school year, though we have added clarity around tablets and personal computers. Implementation of this protocol will begin on the first day of school.

DPI Community Survey

The Decatur Prevention Initiative needs your help in learning more about community perceptions and concerns regarding underage drinking and substance misuse among Decatur youth. The results of this brief survey will be shared with the coalition members, parents, key partners, and the community-at-large. A summary of the results will be posted on the website at www.decaturpi.org. This information assists in satisfying current federal funding requirements as well as helps target our programming efforts and provide critical information for future funding opportunities.

This voluntary survey is anonymous, and responses cannot be traced to you. Please answer the questions based on what you think and do. You may skip any question you choose not to answer.
Thank you so much for volunteering to provide this valuable information to help DPI and our partners better address youth alcohol and substance misuse in Decatur. Please only take this survey once.
