Make time for play this summer. When we think about “unstructured play,” we often think of younger children and activities like playing school, free-building with Legos, or playing tag. But did you know that unstructured play is also crucial for teenagers, as well? Unstructured play in the teen years fosters creativity, problem-solving skills, goal-setting skills, critical thinking, and resilience. It allows teens to explore creative interests, manage stress, resolve conflicts, and build social skills in a way that structured activities often don't. Unstructured play also helps teenagers develop independence, self-confidence, and emotional regulation, which are important for overall well-being.

Summer is a great time to engage in unstructured play! In the teen years, this might look like independently engaging in hobbies like photography, drawing, or archery; or it might be meeting up with friends to play board games, toss a frisbee, crochet, or go for a bike ride or hike. Revisiting favorite childhood activities can also be a great way to engage in unstructured play. Grab some sidewalk chalk, build a pillow fort, color a picture, make bracelets, host a water fight, build with Legos, play flashlight tag, or take a picnic to the park to flex those unstructured play muscles!
