Certification Standards for Secondary Educators
Two members of the Disciplinary Literacy Task Force are proud to have collaborated with MDE and other statewide educators to create updated certification standards for secondary educators in Michigan. The Disciplinary Literacy Standards for the Preparation of Middle Grades (5-9) and High School (7-12) Teachers would replace Michigan's current Certification Standards for the Preparation of All Secondary Teachers in Reading Instruction, adopted by the SBE on July 11, 2002.The new standards rely heavily on the Essential Instructional Practices for Disciplinary Literacy document and were recently presented to the State Board of Education and are now open to public comment. You can read more about this topic here.
Logic Model Development
The Disciplinary Literacy Task Force is collaborating with evaluators at the University of Michigan Marsal Family School of Education Center for Education Design, Evaluation, and Research (CEDER) to articulate short-, medium- and long-term goals for our work through the development of a logic model. This model aligns to the Literacy Essentials Theory of Action and will allow us to stay focused and track progress as we work to scale Disciplinary Literacy work statewide. You can view the logic model here.

Disciplinary Literacy Task Force
The Disciplinary Literacy Task Force is comprised of consultants from across the state, each of whom brings his or her own disciplinary expertise. We meet monthly, and our most pressing goal is to continue to scale this work statewide. We also prioritize equity in the delivery of our services as well as building and leveraging partnerships across the state in an effort to promote this important work. Our ongoing work includes planning for, creating and implementing professional learning for secondary educators and using this newsletter, our blog, Twitter, and other publications to broaden awareness about this approach and its benefits to our secondary students. We look forward to increased opportunities to work with you!
