Importance of "Showing Up"
Friday, October 30th marks the 38th day of the school year, and we are off to a strong start especially when it comes to school attendance!
So far, McGlynn Middle School has maintained a 97% student attendance rate! That is the strongest start to a school year in more than a decade when it comes to consistent student attendance. That is something to be proud of! Keep it up!
I want to remind all students about the importance of being on the five-day plan: being in school five days a week, every week. On the first day of school, I challenged students to make SHOWING UP your # 1 goal.
And why does that matter so much? Because being present is the first step toward being successful. Every day you come to school, you are learning important content, building skills, and preparing yourself for what comes next, whether that is college, trade school, or your future career. Your teachers are working hard to prepare you for those opportunities, but you have to do your part. You have to be here to take advantage of them.
In Massachusetts, school attendance is required by law because we recognize how important education is to your future. Being in school every day helps you build the knowledge, skills, habits, and responsibility you will need throughout your life.
October Memories:
The BioBus Visits McGlynn!
Students boarded the "BioBus" at McGlynn in October! Student scientists to explored various organisms using a research-grade microscope. They practiced their observation and critical thinking skills to ask questions, to form hypotheses, and to look for answers. Great job scientists!
Ed Gerety, Motivational Speaker & Author, Visits McGlynn
Students at McGlynn had the opportunity to participate in a dynamic, heart-centered assembly that inspired them to step into leadership, own their confidence, and treat others with respect and kindness. Motivational speaker Ed Gerrety led the assembly and gave out copies of his book to students- "Shine Your Light."

Screenagers: Generation AI
In October during WIN block, students watched "Screenagers: Generation AI." This is the fifth film from the team behind the acclaimed Screenagers documentary series. Teachers facilitated stimulating class discussions at different set points throughout the viewing of the movie. Like other films in the series, Screenagers: Generation AI captures the critical moment we're in collectively as AI reshapes young people's relationships, learning, and mental health. The film weaves approachable science and personal experiences, and equips parents, educators, and communities with tools to actively shape how AI enters their schools and homes. It explores how AI-generated images, including deepfakes, AI chatbots, and AI in schools, are reshaping the social and academic lives of kids, and impacting their mental health, and what parents, schools, and communities can do to reduce the risks that come with this powerful technology.

Mustang Fall Sports
Mustang Softball Captures the GBL for the 3rd Consecutive Season!
Congratulations to our middle school Mustang Softball team on their 8-6 victory over rival, Malden, in yesterday’s Greater Boston League Championship game! Yesterday’s hard fought victory over the Malden Tornados not only captured them GBL but it topped off an undefeated fall season!
8th grader Evelyn Willwerth was impressive with her smooth and slick plays at shortstop where she displayed soft hands and a strong arm. Ayla Lavalee looked strong at the hot corner over at 3rd base playing excellent defense while keeping the team vibes strong as a leader.
Cora Schuler entered the game in the 3rd inning as the pitcher and ended up getting the save, pumping in strikes and keeping the Tornado bats at bay.
Olivia Last, Claire Murphy, Gabby Purifory each had some of the biggest hits of the day for the Mustangs against a hard throwing Malden right handed pitcher.
Give it up for the lady Mustangs who have remarkably captured the GBL trophy for each one of the past three middle school years!
Cross Country wins the GBL!
Congratulations to our McGlynn Middle School boys and girls cross country teams on an outstanding fall season, capped off by 1st place finishes for BOTH teams at yesterday’s GBL Championship meet!
A special shout-out to Frankie Sipe, who finished 1st overall in the girls race and emerged as the top female runner in the GBL!
We are incredibly proud of all our student-athletes for their hard work, perseverance, sportsmanship, and growth throughout the season. Congratulations to our GBL champions and all of our runners who contributed to this incredible team achievement!

Join The Winter Color Guard
The Medford Winter Color Guard is starting their clinics for Winter Guard auditions! Grades 7th-12th are eligible to join.
Clinics are where you learn the skills that you will need for auditions, and the rest of the competition season if you choose to join. Also, auditions will have no cuts. It's all about attitude! Auditions are the way that the Color Guard Staff can appropriately place you into the show. No one will force you to do skills you are not ready for. Color Guard is about building skills along the way, no one starts off perfect.
The Medford Winter Guard is an amazing opportunity to meet new people and make bonds you will have for the rest of your life, along with building confidence to be in front of people. And, of course, totally win every competition! Medford's Color Guard program is so exemplary, that we have produced world class performers outside of high school! If you want to learn more about the fun things and awards we have received this previous fall season, consider looking at the Band and Color Guard's Instagram pages.
Consider all of the reasons for giving it a try, and coming to one or both of our clinic days in the next month. Bring a friend!
