Message from the PRINCIPAL
Dear Families,
In Kansas, students participate in state assessments primarily to measure their progress toward meeting state curriculum standards and to satisfy both state and federal laws. For elementary, students in grades 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th participate in both Reading & Math assessments. 5th graders also participate in the Science Assessment. We appreciate your support in making sure your student has a good night's sleep before their assessment.
Warmly,
Amy Johnston
Elementary Principal

Topics
Each month, a different topic will be reviewed. All expectations can be found in the MVE Handbook.
Sept - Attendance; Oct - Grading System; Nov - Behavior Expectations & Consequences; Dec - When to stay home; Jan - School Closing / Indoor Recess; Feb - required school drills; March - Bullying; April - Cell phones; May - summer support contacts
Topic: Cell Phones
At MVE, the standard policy for elementary students is often referred to as "Away for the Day." This requires that all personal electronic devices—including cell phones, smartwatches, and tablets—remain powered off and stored in student backpacks or cubbies from the first bell until dismissal.
Key Components of "Backpack Only" Policies
- Bell-to-Bell Storage: Students must secure their devices as soon as they arrive on campus.
- "Out of Sight" Requirement: Even if a device is in a bag, it must be silenced or powered off to prevent notifications from causing distractions.
- Restricted Access: Unlike high schoolers, who may sometimes use phones during passing periods or lunch, elementary students generally have no access to their bags for phone use during these times.
- Emergency Communication: If a student needs to contact home, they must use a school-provided office phone rather than reaching into their bag for a personal device.
Standard Policy Exceptions
MVE allows exceptions for devices kept in bags if they are needed for:
- Medical Monitoring: Such as tracking glucose levels for students with diabetes.
- IEP Accommodations: When a device is specifically listed as a necessary learning or communication tool in a student's Individualized Education Program.
