GRATITUDE GRATITUDE

How can we teach children about what it means?

When introducing the concept of gratitude to a child, it’s important to use age-appropriate language and examples that they can relate to. You might say something like, “Being thankful means feeling happy and grateful for the good things in your life.” Encourage your child to think about things they are thankful for, such as their favorite toy or spending time with family.

Try this out at home!

Keep a Gratitude Jar, also known as a Thankful Jar, somewhere accessible. Let the kids decorate it with their favorite colors or stickers. Each day, ask everyone (including yourself!) to write down one thing they’re thankful for and put it in the jar. These gratitude activities can help children reflect during particularly difficult days.

Dear ELC families,

As we enter the holiday season, we are focused on the topic of gratitude. This time of year is perfect to begin discussing this topic because young children will be having some of their first experiences with giving and receiving gifts, as well as how it feels to give a gift to someone else. Some of the practical life skills we have been practicing in the classroom include wrapping gifts and making gifts.

Our children are so sweet, saying "thank you" for every little thing and really showing gratitude to their classmates. We are also discussing holidays around the world, like Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza, as well as learning about money! The children have been learning about coin amounts and how to use an abacus.

In our Deaf classroom, we have been reading:

  • "A Snowy Day"
  • "Bear Stays up for Christmas"
  • "Bad Kitty: Searching for Santa"

In our Blind classroom, we have been reading:

  • "Llama Llama Holiday Drama"
  • "Celebrate Kawanza"
  • "There was an Old Lady who swallowed a bell"
  • "Rudolph the Red Nose reindeer"
  • "The Gingerbread man"

Please call or email with questions and thank you for sharing your delightful children with us!

Violet

Violet is squeezing orange juice. This activity helps develop fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination, which are vital for students preparing to read and write. Violet is building her independence as she prepares a snack for herself. She also remains focused and patient while squeezing the juice. Students love the satisfaction of getting to eat/drink something they prepared themselves!

Ava

Ava is completing a handshape activity. After being shown a picture, Ava must determine which handshape(s) are used to correctly name the object. This activity requires the students to focus on forming accurate signs and using correct grammar. This activity helps students to prepare for sight word and reading activities.

Zones of Regulation

Every Friday, the school psychologist, Dan Binder comes to the classroom to teach Zones of Regulation. He works with students on identifying emotions, recognizing the feelings of others and responding appropriately, and self-coping skills.

Savannah

Savannah really enjoys practicing scooping beans and transferring them to another bowl. Not only is she practicing counting how many beans are going into the spoon, then counting how many are in the bowl, but she is having loads of fun in the process! Great job, Savannah!

Nova

Nova is such a master at these wooden puzzles! Here she is working on a bumble bee puzzle, which is our classroom theme! When she's finished with her puzzle, she is so happy! Great work, Nova!

Our friend Liam has made some really tall towers with this stacker learning toy! He used his imagination to create his own pattern, and used problem solving to place each individual piece. Looks great, Liam!

Ethan & Brandon

Ethan and Brandon are working together with the number rods. They started by placing the rods into a stair from smallest to largest. They then counted each segment of the rod to determine its quantity and match it to the correct number. This work helps students learn to count to ten and begin to understand that numbers represent quantities. Ethan and Brandon worked great together, taking turns, and supporting each other.

Calvin

Our friend Calvin loves all to do with music. He loves shaking his maracas to a song with his classmates, he loves listening to music during lessons, and he loves making his own music!

Physical Education & Health Physical Education & Health

The winter months are coming! For some, it's too cold outside! We understand, but we believe it is essential for kids to become regular physical activity participants outside. This time is perfect time to help our students understand the possibilities and benefits of outside physical activity.

Below is the five benefits of engaging in outside physical activity in colder temperatures.

Vitamin D

When students are outside, they are not only exposed to the potential of outside play, but also the necessary vitamins that the outdoor environment provides (e.g., Vitamin D through sun exposure)

Fresh Air

Nothing beats being outside on a nice crisp day; getting fresh air can promote calmness and happiness

Problem-Solving

While our students are in a winter environment, their problem-solving skills can be challenged with activities that are extended and more complex in this unique environment

Social Development

The outside environment can provide students with new opportunities to create, participate in, and enhance innovative “winterized” activities; this conveys the message that an active, healthy lifestyle can be achieved year-round

Discovering Enjoyment

While engaged in various outdoor winter activities, students will have more opportunities to discover activities they “enjoy”

To help our students learning and engaging in outside physical activity, it is important for your child to be dressed appropriately for the weather during Physical Education class.

Travel reimbursement is available to parents/guardians of enrolled BEMS students who attend the School Advisory Council (SubSAC Title I) meeting. Please contact our Parent Liaison, Misty Porter, if you are planning to attend the meeting and want to request travel reimbursement. porterm@fsdbk12.org or 904-827-2988

Hope to see you there!

Hey FSDB Parents,

Did you know that the Parent Services Department offers travel reimbursement? This means you can come to campus for educational events and be reimbursed for mileage, meals, and even hotel expenses. There are a couple of things you need to know first. All Parent University and Parent Engagement Workshops qualify for reimbursement. Title I Parent meetings and School Advisory Council meetings qualify too. We can’t reimburse travel to attend teacher conferences or IEP meetings, but you can schedule those the day prior to an approved event. Here on campus, we are working together to schedule events so you can attend multiple things during each visit. There are a couple of other things we will need to discuss before you start traveling.

Give me a call or send an email if you’d like to know more.
