MAP Testing Next Week for Grades 2-8

Students in Grades 2 through 8 will be participating in MAP Growth tests next week. Testing will be online using Chromebooks. The subject areas tested are Mathematics, Language Usage, and Reading. It is imperative that all students arrive to school before 8 AM to have a smooth transition into classrooms. Please have all students get enough sleep each night, as always, and a healthy breakfast each morning.

Band

Band is back at it in the new year! It was great to hear the halls filled with music again today. After performing in our wonderful Christmas Pageant and Concert, students will continue their lessons and prepare to perform in the spring.

Student Council

Student government met and discussed their plan for the new year! Everyone contributed to the discussion and many great ideas were passed unanimously. We are all excited to start implementing these initiatives and make a positive impact on the school community.

Girls Basketball

Julia Skelly (class of ‘24) came to the girls basketball practice right before break to share the skills and drills she’s learned on her high school team. Julia started playing basketball on the middle school girls’ team during her time at St. Mary’s. She came back to lead the girls through some stretches, layup drills, and a dribbling activity. We are so grateful for Julia’s leadership and desire to share her new skills with her former teammates!

Infants

Today, our infant artists explored their creativity by making paper snowflakes! With tiny hands and (feet) hard at work, they practiced their fine motor skills. Each snowflake is as one-of-a-kind as the child who made it.

PreK

Miss Porcello's PreK class had so much fun celebrating the new year together! They read the story "Happy New Year, Spot!" and talked about their new year wishes. They watched the ball drop and then did their very own countdown. All the students picked out party hats and noise makers for even more fun! They ended with a 2025 themed craft.

Grade 5

It's back! The great chocolate milk debate has returned to the fifth grade. Students started by writing letters to Dr. Nadjarian and Mrs. Enrique and shared whether or not they thought chocolate milk should be served at our school. Although students had wonderful ideas, Dr. Nadjarian and Mrs. Enrique explained how a decision can not be made on opinions alone and needed to be supported by data, facts, and research. Fifth grade has been challenged to go back to the drawing board and collect information to support their claims. Students were even challenged to poll a portion of the school to collect some extra data. Will the fifth grade be able to persuade our school leaders to one side or the other?

Students in 5th grade have also been learning about structures and features of nonfiction texts. They created flip books to help them better understand the five different structures, and then read articles about a variety of topics using clues to decide which structure the article is an example of.

Grade 6 Social Studies

In Ms. Falcone's grade 6 Social Studies class, students have been learning about Mesopotamia and Sumer. They learned about cuneiform, the ancient writing system, and got to try it for themselves! Students made their own tablets and practiced writing words and numbers that are important to them. Then, they worked on translating some messages written in cuneiform.
