Dear Aspen Elementary Community,

We are so proud of our principled students, who have shown wonderful enthusiasm and dedication as they continue building essential self-management skills both inside and outside the classroom. Seeing our learners take responsibility for their routines and approach each day with independence and respect is truly inspiring.

Important Reminders & Dismissal Logistics

  • Morning Arrival: Supervision begins at 7:45am on the AES Playgrounds and Cafeteria. Students are welcome to play outside or come inside to purchase breakfast.

  • Afternoon Dismissal Plans: Please make sure your child knows their afternoon plan each morning before arriving at school. Additionally, be sure to complete your child’s teacher-specific pick-up document. If anything changes or an unexpected update arises during the day, please communicate directly with Carrie Milton in the main office.

Back to School Night for Parents & Caregivers

We warmly invite all parents and caregivers to join us next Wednesday from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM for our Back to School Night.

  • This evening offers a valuable opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, learn about our curriculum, and hear key classroom news and expectations.

  • We will also convene for a schoolwide meeting in the District Theater to share our overarching school goals, review campus procedures, and highlight meaningful ways you can get involved in our school community.

  • Many of our community partners will have tables set-up in the front of the building for you to explore their offerings.

  • Adult-Only Event: Please note that this evening is structured specifically for parents and caregivers. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide childcare for this event, so please plan accordingly.

Building Strong Reading Habits

Establishing a regular nightly reading routine is one of the most effective ways to foster academic growth, expand vocabulary, and spark curiosity. We encourage families to spend time reading together every evening, helping our students develop strong self-management habits and a lifelong love of learning.

Celebrating Summer Learning

We are thrilled to celebrate the 97 students who actively participated in our Summer Learning or Summer Explorers program! On Monday, these dedicated learners will receive certificates, Paradise cookie coupons, and popsicles during school to recognize their hard work.

Note: Please continue to use your Summer Learning deck of cards for fun games and skill practice at home throughout the school year! Extras available in the main office.

Beginning of the year Assessment

  • As part of our commitment to supporting every learner, we have garthered meaningful insights to guide our instruction. This week, our teams will thoughtfully analyze the data collected to plan for instruction, intervention and extension.
  • In the next two weeks you will receive a parent letter which provides a snapshot of your child's Literacy and Math performance along with suggestions for how you can support their learning at home.

AES Restroom Advisory Group

Facilities Director, Joe Waneka, is looking to establish an AES restroom advisory group to provide feedback on our upcoming renovation work. We are currently planning for a meeting on September 9th from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM. We invite interested parents, caregivers, and students in 3rd and 4th grade to participate. If you are interested in joining this group, please let Ashley Bodkins know.

Every day offers fresh opportunities for learning, personal growth, resilience, and joy. Thank you for your continued partnership, trust, and dedication to our Aspen Elementary family.

Warmly,

Ashley and Dana

PYP Coordinator's Corner - Jen Liddington

Learner Profile Focus: Principled & Self-Management

This month, we are focusing on being Principled and strengthening our Self-Management Skills! At school, being principled means making responsible choices, doing the right thing even when no one is watching, being honest, and taking responsibility for our actions. Self-management skills help students manage their time, emotions, materials, and behavior so they are ready to learn and contribute to their community.

Taking action is also an important part of the PYP! We want students to recognize that what they learn can inspire them to make positive choices and take meaningful action—both at school and at home. Action can be simple: helping someone without being asked, taking care of the environment, solving a problem, standing up for what is right, or making a change based on something they have learned.

You can support these ideas at home by:

- Encouraging your child to take responsibility for age-appropriate tasks.

- Asking, “What would a principled choice look like here?”

- Helping your child practice strategies for managing emotions and frustration.

- Noticing when your child independently takes action to help others or their community.

- Celebrating when your child takes responsibility for a mistake and works to make it right.

When you see your child demonstrating these skills or taking action at home, talk about it! Naming these moments helps students recognize that being a PYP learner doesn’t stop when they leave school—it is about using what they learn to make a positive difference in the world around them.

Single Subjects Snapshot: ACES

Hello everyone! We are Annika, Chloe, and Alissa, the ACES teachers at AES. We are so excited for another year with your children! Next week, each grade level will start their very first ACES unit. In kindergarten students are introduced to Crunch the caterpillar and will explore all about what animals need for survival. First graders will begin a unit using folktales to explain natural phenomena we see around us. In second grade, students will learn about landforms, including some of the iconic mountains and rivers that define our Roaring Fork Valley. Third graders will examine Colorado’s wolf reintroduction project from multiple perspectives, considering ecosystem wellbeing and ranching livelihoods. In fourth grade, students will begin our geology unit, which pairs with the ACES field trip to the Maroon Bells. We can’t wait to dive into all of these fascinating topics and we welcome your children’s curiosity!

Digital Wellness at AES

Are you concerned about your child's digital wellness? The Digital Wellness Coalition began in January 2026 to address these concerns from a community wide lens. Interested in getting involved or learning more, reach out to Mary Bloom (bloom.mary@gmail.com) and keep an eye out for more information.

Coming soon... AES Digital Commitments and Guidance for Families

Check out these policies which support digital wellness at school:

AES Personal Device Policy

School Bus Electronic Device Policy

We know many families are thinking carefully about when to introduce personal devices. We encourage you to consider joining the Wait Until 8th pledge, which supports delaying smartphones and social media access until at least 8th grade. This helps students build strong social skills, independence, and healthy habits before navigating the digital world more fully.

Here is a social story, "My Device Stays in my Backpack," (English and Spanish) you can share with your child at home to support our commitment to a focused, safe and engaging learning environment.

A note from the Nurses...

  • Please keep your students home if they are sick! They should be free of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea for at least 24 hours without the use of medication, and symptoms should be improved before returning to school.
  • Friendly reminder: Per school policy, all medications including prescription, over-the-counter, creams, and cough drops require a physician’s order signed by a parent or guardian before administration. Medications must be delivered directly to the health office by a parent or guardian. Students may not transport or self-carry medications. When in doubt, please contact the health office for clarification.

Thank you for caring about the health of your students and our school community.

Smile for Students in Kindergarten - 3rd Grade

  • Your student/s should have come home this week with paperwork in their backpacks. We are excited to share information about the Smiles for Students initiative, brought to Aspen Schools through Garfield County Public Health and the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Smiles for Students provides preventative dental care directly in schools at no out-of-pocket cost to families. This program is available to students who currently have a dentist as well as those who may not have regular dental care.

What Does the Program Include?

Students participating in the program will receive licensed dental services at school, including:

  • Dental exams twice per year, including an oral examination and cleaning
  • Fluoride varnish to help prevent cavities
  • Dental sealants to protect teeth from decay
  • Silver diamine fluoride (SDF), when appropriate, which is painted or applied to areas of decay to help stop and block the progression of cavities without drilling or numbing

By providing these services at school, the program helps reduce the need for families to schedule additional dental appointments, helps prevent students from missing valuable instructional time, and can help parents avoid missing work for routine preventative dental visits.

Who Can Participate?

The Smiles for Students program will follow participating students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade for three years, providing ongoing preventative dental care throughout the program.

As part of enrollment, families will be asked about their child's dental insurance coverage. Only Medicaid/CHP+ information will be requested, and families will not incur any out-of-pocket expenses for services provided through this program.

We hope this opportunity will make preventative dental care more accessible and convenient for our students and families.

If you have additional questions about the Smiles for Students initiative, please contact:

Carrie Godes, Program Provider
970-665-6385

You may also stop by the Aspen School Health Office and speak with Robin Strecker or Feira Lupini.

  • Foundation for learning: School is critical to building a strong foundation for learning that will help students succeed in middle school, high school, and beyond.
  • Missed opportunities: Each day a student is not in school is a missed opportunity to learn something they will need in order to understand more difficult material later.

Please check in with the front office of the building you are visiting. You will receive a badge and scan for a temporary parking pass. If you do not have a parking pass, your vehicle may get a ticket or be booted.

Healthy Choices for Celebrations

From birthday to holiday parties throughout the school year, children, teachers, and families have numerous reasons to celebrate. Celebrations are a great way for children to feel part of the school community, where the learning environment is made festive and where everyone can come together to enjoy a break from the routine. Parties often center around food, such as cupcakes, cookies, candy, chips and sugary beverages. While these foods, in moderation, can be part of a healthy, well-balanced diet, these unhealthy choices have almost become daily norms in the classroom, rather than exceptions. Aspen School District staff are encouraged to promote school celebrations with healthy treats or non-food items which are recommended by the CDC's Healthy Schools program.

Alternatives include: stickers, pencils, extra recess, dance party, cards, star student etc.
