East WeeklySeptember 5, 2025

Hello Middle School East Families, Hello Middle School East Families,

We had an exciting week here at GMSE!

Our 6th grade students enjoyed Adventure Day and spending time with their HOUSE while participating in fun team-building activities. Our 7th and 8th grade athletic teams are truly hitting their stride with multiple events going on throughout the week.

September is Attendance Awareness Month, and we’re proud to partner with Stay in the Game! and the Columbus Crew to help students prioritize being present and on time every day (see details below).

We’ve also been reflecting on our bookbag and locker policy to better support students’ mornings. Beginning next week, doors will open at 8:45 AM for students eating breakfast and at 8:50 AM for all students to allow for more time in the morning. Students eating breakfast should remain in the cafeteria, and after visiting their lockers, everyone should head directly to their HOUSE/WIN period to start the day on the right foot.

As always thank you for your ongoing support! Have a wonderful weekend!

Take care,

Megan Kirsten

GMSE Principal

SEPTEMBER IS ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH!

Starting strong in September makes a big difference for the whole school year. Research shows that students who miss just 1–2 days in the first month are much more likely to become chronically absent later on. That’s why we’re working together to build positive attendance habits now!

When students come to school every day they:

  • build routines that help them feel confident

  • stay connected with friends and teachers

  • have the best chance to succeed academically and socially

This year, as an All-Star District in the Stay in the Game! Attendance Network we are celebrating Attendance Awareness Month as a part of our campaign!

Thank you for being our partners in helping every student become an Attendance All-Star!

Do your part in ensuring you get to school on time and ready to learn! If you haven't done so already, take the pledge! Students will take the Pledge next week!

Weekly Grade Report Emails

To help comply with HB8, the district is launching weekly grade report emails beginning this Sunday. These reports will provide a snapshot of your child’s current grade averages as they appear in Infinite Campus at the time the report is generated. Please note: these are not final report card grades and may change as assignments are graded. It is even possible that a teacher collected an assignment on Friday and has not yet entered the grade.

A few important notes:

  • Only classes with grades in the current term will appear in the report.

  • Reports are only sent to guardians, as listed in IC.

  • If your child has no grades entered for the current term, a report will not be sent—this is normal at the start of each term.

Science: Today we started our first project of the year! We have been studying cellular replication (which we took a checkpoint on today) and now we are studying the advantages and disadvantages of how plants/animals reproduce. For the project students will collect a species native to Ohio and create a field guide on that species detailing its reproductive strategy, facts, identification, and a scientific illustration of the species.

Students will be given a container for their specimens and they can either collect it at school on Monday or they can bring one in from home. Students will need their specimens in class by Wednesday September 10th.

Algebra: Next Wednesday 9/10 algebra students will have their first Chapter Checkpoint! We will be reviewing Monday and Tuesday and students can sign up for my WIN or Study Hall if they need extra help reviewing. Please keep in mind Chapter Checkpoints cannot be retaken.

We’re always looking for ways to connect classroom learning to the real world or allow students to explore the future—and we’d love your help! If you're open to sharing your job title and a brief description of what you do, we’d love to learn more. We’re gathering a list of parents and guardians who might be interested in speaking to students about their careers, allowing students to shadow for a day, or participating in a future career fair.

If this sounds like something you'd consider, please take a moment to fill out this quick google form. Thank you for helping our students dream big!
