Un Mensaje de Directora Sarlos:

Hi Palisades Parents,

We have had a lovely week here at Palisades in this gorgeous Spring Weather! So many wonderful things are going on here inside and outside our building! Inside, students in the first grade classes are wrapping up their insect units. A huge Thanks to our green team for volunteering in our classrooms this week to plant seeds in our classrooms. We have seen lots of happy kindergarteners taking home their plants.

Our Character trait of the month is creativity. Students have been using their creativity to learn new games with our new Jump ropes and bouncy balls.

Thanks so much to all of you for the lovely food and flowers for Teacher Appreciation Week. We are so grateful for all of the love and support from the Palisades families.

We can't wait to see you at the International Fair on the 19th!

Warmly,

Lilian Sarlos

In Preparation for Mandarin Immersion Next Year

Plans are moving along for our Mandarin Immersion program - we still need some first-grade registrations so tell your friends.

Our Mandarin books have arrived at the library and we are processing and cataloging them and getting them on shelves and some students have already checked some of them out! What an adventure in multi-lingual and cross-cultural learning! Some of these books are bilingual and have English and Mandarin in them.

I have received some questions recently about the Mandarin program next year. Below are some Q and A

Q: Will there be a separate principal for Mandarin Immersion?

A: No, we are still a whole small school and I will be the principal of the whole small integrated school!

Q:Will all the children play together?

A: Yes! at Recess.

Q: Will there be a separate PTO for Mandarin?

B:No, we will all work together and have lots of

great cross cultural celebrations.

Q: Will the Mandarin and Spanish classrooms be in different wings in the building?

A: No, classrooms will be clustered by grade levels.

School Volunteers

For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools.

Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.

Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements.

Volunteer Application for LOSD

Thank you for applying promptly, and for your service to our students and schools. We are grateful for our volunteers.

ParentVUE Update

We know people appreciate hearing from us, however…52 students in our system have workplace switchboards listed as their primary numbers. Do your coworkers a favor and put your direct line as the primary contact when you verify your student's information.

Log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab. If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." Contact your student's school if you need clarification on whether you have a ParentVUE account. For assistance with the verification process, refer to the user guide on the LOSD website or contact your student's school.

Menu Change

We will be having a school lunch menu change for the last two weeks of the school year,

May 30th to June 9th.

June 12th there will be no school lunch, since it is an early release day.

Please look at the picture below for the changes:

Changes to COVID-19 Response

The Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority has updated requirements for school districts' communicable disease management planning for the 2023-24 school year. Included are the following changes to our COVID-19 response:

Effective May 11:

  • Several sources of COVID-19 data ended. We will archive our dashboard and CDC Community Level metrics shared in our newsletter, website, and school signage.

  • A five-day period of isolation for those infected with COVID-19 is no longer recommended for the general population, including people in K-12 education settings. Our schools will continue to follow the recommendation for students and staff to stay home until fever free for 24 hours and symptoms improve.

Effective June 17:

  • The COVID-19 vaccination requirement for public and private school teachers, staff, and school volunteers (OAR 333-019-1030) will be lifted. That means that after June 16, teachers, school staff, and school volunteers will no longer have to provide proof of vaccination or have a valid medical or religious exception on file to be in direct or indirect contact with students.

Summer Hosting Opportunity for Families

Host a high school or college student from Japan for 1-4 weeks this summer! Hosting an international student is a great way to learn about a new culture, establish global friendships, and introduce young people to the great wide world. It is an impactful experience centered around international collaboration, solidarity, and education. The students are coming to share cultures, practice English, and become part of an American household. Students will have weekday English classes and activities at Portland State University. We also work with international college students attending Lewis and Clark College, PCC Sylvania, or PSU for an academic term or longer. Students commute on public transit, bring their own spending money and are covered by comprehensive medical and accident insurance. Families receive orientation materials, 24/7 support, and a small hosting stipend. ACES is a PNW nonprofit that has been connecting families and students since 1995. Learn more at acescollegehomstay.org, apply online, or contact us at aces.org@exploretheworld.org or 971-387-6388.

May Nurse News

Asthma/Allergy Medications at School

It is critical to the health and safety of your student to bring ALL doctor recommended medications to school. Over the summer, speak with your doctor to get the proper supplies for school and then go to the LOSD web page to find the proper forms to be completed with the medications. If your student is in Elementary or Secondary and will store their meds at school, watch for a medication drop off time for your particular school. If they are in secondary and keeping their medication in their possession, please submit the proper paperwork so we are aware of where to find their medication in case of an emergency.

Individualized Health Plan? - Watch for an Email

If your child has a LOSD Individualized Health Plan (IHP) developed in consultation with your District Nurse, please watch for an email! Your response is needed to confirm or update your student's plan. We appreciate your prompt response.

Immunizations

Please review the OHA requirements and information on required immunizations for students. Please make arrangements to complete immunizations and update Synergy over the summer to avoid exclusion in 2024.
