Principals Corner
We are in our third week of the second semester and winter sports is in high gear. Our girls basketball teams and wrestling have been representing CMS well! Spring sports will come sooner than we all anticipate. I do want to remind all spring sports athletes about the importance of maintaining good grades through the winter. Spring sports will start around the start of the 4th quarter and I don't want to see any athlete struggle to be eligible because they get too far behind during the third quarter. We had good attendance at our Math night on January 19th. We will still have two more family nights coming up. Our next family night will be a Science family night on March 6th. We will also be having our Student Led Conferences the week of March 11 - 14. Students will be preparing their materials the week of March 4th - 8th and will be bringing home information to sign up during that time.

Student Sleep by Ian Lopez
We live in a world that is becoming more and more dependent on technology. We use our devices to work, communicate, connect with friends and family, and entertain ourselves. However, the overuse of screens and devices can have negative impacts on our sleep quality.
The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with our body's production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates our sleep-wake cycle. Exposure to blue light before bedtime can suppress melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. This is particularly problematic for children and teenagers, whose developing brains are more sensitive to the effects of blue light.
In addition to the impact of blue light, the content we consume on our screens can also affect our sleep quality. Engaging in stimulating activities such as playing video games, watching exciting movies, or scrolling through social media feeds can activate our brains and make it harder to wind down for sleep. Furthermore, the use of devices late at night can disrupt our circadian rhythm, making it harder to fall asleep at a regular time each night.
So, what can we do to improve our sleep quality in the age of screens and devices? Here are a few tips:
1. Limit screen time before bedtime: Try to avoid using screens at least an hour before bedtime. If you must use a device, consider using a blue light filter or wearing blue light blocking glasses.
2. Establish a bedtime routine: Creating a consistent bedtime routine can help signal to your body that it's time to wind down for sleep. This could include activities such as reading a book, taking a warm bath, or practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation.
3. Set boundaries around device use: Consider setting limits on the amount of time you spend on your devices each day. This could include setting aside specific times of day for device use, or using apps that track and limit screen time.
By being mindful of our screen time and taking steps to improve our sleep habits, we can improve our overall health and wellbeing. So, the next time you're tempted to stay up late scrolling through social media or binge-watching your favorite show, remember the importance of a good night's sleep and take steps to protect it.

MLK DAY!
For Martin Luther King day the students in Mrs. Young's 8th grade advisory wrote a few paragraphs on why we celebrate MLK. Here is a few of our favorites.
MLK Day is a national holiday in the United States that is reserved on the third Monday of January each year. This day honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was a prominent civil rights activist in the 1950s and 1960s. Dr. King is known for his tireless efforts to end racial segregation and discrimination in America, using nonviolent means such as peaceful protests and civil disobedience. He is perhaps best remembered for his poignant speeches, including the famous "I Have a Dream" speech, which he delivered during the March on Washington in 1963. Dr. King's work paved the way for significant progress in the fight for civil rights, and his legacy continues to inspire people around the world to work towards a more just and equal society.
-Ian Lopez MLK Day is very important because of Martin Luther King Jr, he is a historical person. We celebrate the day to remember what he did to help us with the common civil rights of our people. MLK was all about making sure everyone was treated fair, no matter what their skin color ,race, or ethnicity may be. Martin Luther King Jr once gave a speech, which later became one of the most known speeches ever, he named his speech the “I Have a Dream” speech. He talked about how one day everyone will be equal. This means that MLK Day is similar to MLK'S speeches and what he did. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, and that dream eventually became a reality, which turned into a MLK day. It’s something we should be proud of. -Jonathan Lopez Solis Martin Luther King jr. was greatly know for his famous ¨I have a Dream ̈ speech, and his passionate work in helping equality become normal in American society. Martin Luther King was Born on January 15, 1929. His father was a pastor and his mom was previously a school teacher. Being raised in a world were racial segregation was completely normal and required in most parts of society. Martin Luther King jr. saw racism daily, being a black American. He grew up in schools that were specifically made for black children. His ¨Dream was to live in a country where all people no matter their race, ethnicity, or color of skin lived together. Sharing America equally and peacefully.¨ And that was what Martin Luther worked for until the day he died. Between the boycotts and thousands of speeches he gave urging people against racial segregation, and eventually influencing the movement of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights act of 1965. Allowing colored and Native Americans to Vote and access civil rights. This is why we have a day for MLK. -Jayden Elliott A national figure in the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929–1968) rose to fame with his advocacy of nonviolence as a means to effect social change. From 1955 when he emerged as a leader during the Montgomery Bus Boycott until his assassination in 1968, he was both admired and reviled in his crusade to achieve racial equality. King also served as an eloquent and potent figure bridging societal divides, as evidenced by his access to the halls of power in both political (the White House) and religious (the Vatican) spheres. In 1964, at age 35, he became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize; he was also the twelfth American and third African-American to receive the honor. -Leo Paglia Martin Luther King Jr was born January 15th, 1929. Martin Luther King Jr was a very important person. Back on August 28, 1963. He gave a big speech about how people shouldn't be treated by the way of their color, they should be treated by their character. People don't realize how important MLK was, sadly he died on April 4th 1968 a couple years after his speech due to getting shot and wounded and died on the second-floor of Lorraine Motel in Memphis. We thank Martin Luther king every year on January 15th, thankful for his leadership, his pride, and his character. Thank you Martin Luther King Jr. -Reeghan Lake
