Decatur community,

It's "Bowl Week." I'm not talking college football. I'm not talking the biggest bowl in the world in Jingdezhen, China. I'm not talking gumbo soup from Joe's Barbeque in KC, voted the best bowl of soup in Kansas by insider.com.

No, I have two specific bowls in mind. First, the Super Bowl. I know that history teacher Trevor Williams, Board President Roger May, young Brady Gehring (unlike his Eagles' fan, father) and myself will have to rest on hopes of next year to see if our Broncos can bounce back.

Having said that, my dad is a Chiefs' fan, a die hard. It didn't matter what their record, my dad's loyalty to the Chiefs' never faltered, and though they are bitter rivals of the Broncos, a close second to experiencing the thrill of victory is seeing those that you care about experience the same thing. Good luck to all of the Chiefs' fans out there.

The second Bowl is the Scholars Bowl. There are so many activities in schools, activities that honor and recognize athletics, music, performance, and more. I have always had a soft spot for Scholars Bowl, as it recognizes academic performance. And what is a school if not an academic institution?

February is loaded with high stakes competitions in the KSHSAA handbook, and Coach Wendy Scott and her Scholars Bowl kids kick it off in Langdon, KS next Saturday at the State Scholars Bowl competition after qualifying this past week.

Let the Bowls begin!

SHOUTOUTS SHOUTOUTS

Shoutout to Mrs. Breth for all of the time and effort she put into getting our Snowball Dance organized and decorated. Friday night, Saturday morning, Saturday night, you name it, she was there. A second Breth shoutout Mr. Tim Breth for also sponsoring the dance on Saturday.

Shoutout to junior student Aidyn Witt. Aidyn placed third in the Humorous Solo Acting portion of the Norton Speech Tournament. In the time that I have gotten to know Aidyn, it does not surprise me that she was in the Humorous competition. She is always smiling and having a good time, and I can only anticipate more from her this year.

Shoutout to 11th grade student Cheyanna Hale for pulling off 2 State qualifications this week. Cheyanna and her teammates qualified for State Scholars Bowl next Saturday in Langdon. Cheyanna also qualified for State Piano in Wichita after receiving a 1 Rating on her solo. It's back to back weekends of State competitions for Cheyanna. Cheyanna is also on the cheer team, in the high school band, was in the musical, and is a true definition of the 'involved" high school student. Congrats, Cheyanna.

Shoutout to the girls basketball team for a second straight week with a redemption win. The girls are playing their best basketball of the season, riding a 4 game winning streak that has seen them avenge losses to Wallace Co. and Atwood in back to back weeks. After stepping up to the challenge of 3 road wins in one week, we are back home against Norton this week with only one game on the menu.

Shoutout to juniors Shakira Cook and Jaden Capuzzo. The two were crowned as the Snowball Prince and Princess. It's always a great honor to be chosen by your fellow students, a tremendous sign of respect. Shakira has been here her whole life and Jaden came in midway through the year. Congrats to both.

4 Place in top 3 at Arapahoe

Shoutout to our wrestlers on several top performances in Saturday's tournament in Arapahoe. Four of our wrestlers placed in the top 3:

LUKAS ZODROW - Champion at 138 (Currently 3rd in State)

JOSH JUENEMANN - 2nd Place at 113 (Currently 3rd in State)

REID FORT - 3rd Place at 120

GARRETT EMIGHT - 3rd Place at 182

Barnes and Hale receive Solid Scores on Piano Solos

Shoutout to 10th grade student Weston Barnes. Pictured with Cheyanna, Weston received a 2 Rating on his piano solo. I also have to mention Weston's speed. Last week I mentioned that Mr. Hardwick was timing students running speeds using a laser system. As of my last check-in, Weston had the fastest time.

Student Setup for Snowball

Shoutout to all of the students that helped decorate for the DCHS Snowball Dance. Not always easy to get up on a Saturday morning, especially after a basketball game the night before, but plenty of students were ready to go Saturday morning to make the dance as good as it could be. It's easy to attend, not so easy to prepare.

Pattangall Takes 1st in Squats

Shoutout to 8th grade student Josiah Pattangall for taking 1st place in the 156lb. division in squats. I should also emphasize the congrats to Coach Hardwick. He mentioned that several students had Personal Records (PR), and I have seen the solid interactions and instruction that Mr. Hardwick has given during these sessions.

Smith Takes 1st in Bench

Shoutout to senior Franklin Smith for taking first place this weekend in the bench press portion of the Power lifting competition in Leoti, KS. Franklin was able to bench press an amazing 345 lbs. That's me and my twin brother (if I had one).

Picture obviously not a bench press.

Scholars Bowl Qualifies for State

This past Thursday, the DCHS Scholars' Bowl team traveled to Lincoln, KS to compete against 12 other schools in the KSHSAA Regional Competition. At the end of the day, 3 teams would qualify to move on to the State competition.

Congratulations to the team of Bryant Addleman, Cheyanna Hale, Emma Holloway, Jack Holloway, and Olivia Williby that finished second overall and qualfied for the 1A Division 1 State Competition at Landon-Fairfield High School. The team survived some dramatics, with 4 of their 7 victories coming by one question, three of which were tie-scores on the last question of the round.

Due to the weather, tomorrow will see the NWKL League competition hosted hear at DCHS, a rare moment when League comes after Regionals and right before State. It should be a great appetizer for the team as they now have an opportunity to add a League Championship to their resume prior to the State competition.

It will not be easy however, as the league has 2 other State qualifiers in Atwood (2A) and Wallace County (1A Div. 2).

Here are the High Schools that will compete at State:

Centralia HS, Frankfort HS, Greensburg-Kiowa County HS, *Jetmore-Hodgeman County HS (DEFENDING CHAMPIONS), Little River HS, Mankato-Rock Hills HS, Oberlin-Decatur Community HS, Olpe HS, Osborne HS, Satanta HS, Wichita-Central Christian Academy, Yates Center HS

Good luck Scholars bowl!

School and County Spelling Bees Set for This Week

Throughout the country, schools are having their school and county spelling bees. I'm not going to go into the history of spelling bees this week (perhaps next), but children in grades 3-8 are eligible to participate. Tomorrow, those 7-8 students that were interested will compete in the school spelling bee. Each school is allowed two participants that will move on to the county Bee. This Friday afternoon 2 OES and 2 DCJHS students will participate in the Decatur County Spelling Bee in the DCHS auditorium. The winner will be eligible to advance to the State Spelling Bee that will be held at Newman University in Wichita, KS.

I am very excited that DCHS' own and current board member Zach May will be the Pronouncer at the school Spelling Bee.

ACT Power Prep with Carolyn Devane

ACT Power Prep is coming to Oberlin on Friday, February 10th from 8-12:30. I am very honored to have Carolyn Devane come out to Oberlin to offer this service to our students. Students that have participated in grades 9-12 have given great feedback. Power Prep teaches students how to take the test. Students who have taken Power Prep have shown to score higher on their ACT by 3 points on average. It’s not magic, and students do have to pay attention to what is being discussed, but for those that are truly focused, it is a great tool. Here’s the website for Power Prep if you would like to look it up for more info.

Several of our juniors are taking this test onsite in early March, and we are fortunate enough to be able to pay for each of those students to take the Power Prep course.

Any student at the freshman or sophomore level that would like to take the Power Prep course can also sign up, but they will have to pay the fee.

Here's a bit more information:

This class is designed for any student who wants practical and relevant information on how to increase their ACT score. Taught by Carolyn Devane, who has taught over 45,000 Kansas students, this course helps prepare students for what to expect on the ACT and provides resources, insight, and strategies for improving performance.

The cost of the test:
Sale Price: $55
Regular Price: $65
To Register go to: http://actprep.info/decatur

If you have any questions, call Mr. Holloway at the high school.
