Welcome to Ms. Fun's Art Room!
Welcome back, families! We made it to November! We've been working so hard in the art room this month with learning so many new things. We've been playing around with so many different materials and many grades are entering their weaving units, one of my faves! Keep an eye out for lots of fall themed artwork during the incoming weeks on Artsonia (and check it out, our classroom fundraising goal has changed- thanks to the PAC for sponsoring the purchase of a kiln for the art room!)
Students are Creating... November
Kindergarten
This month, our Kindergarten artists have been learning about the element of art, shape. Students learned about geometric and organic shapes. This month our focus was geometric shapes. We created crazy pumpkin drawings and shape castles as our connecting artworks to geometric shapes. Students have explored drawing with crayons and markers, painting, and making collages with paper. Next we will focus on organic shapes!
1st Grade
1st grade artists continued their focus on texture with our weaving project. Students strengthened their weaving skills from kindergarten by weaving with paper. We used paper that they designed with a focus on texture, using our texture plates as rubbings and adding other medias on top to create layers.
2nd Grade
2nd grade artists learned about symmetry and reflections this month. We looked at works of art and photographs of trees and landscapes being reflected in water and how it creates symmetry. We then utilized this as inspiration to create a fall landscape. The artists learned how to create more realistic tree branches out of "Y" shapes. We are now going into our weaving unit, students are having a blast weaving so far! This is their first time weaving with yarn in the art room.
3rd Grade
Artists in 3rd grade learned about pop artist, James Rizzi, who was famous for his bold, colorful, and imaginative cityscapes, inspired by New York City. We looked at several of his artworks and talked about what elements we might include in our own artworks that could show we are being inspired by his art style. Faces, lots of details, sun and moon in the sky, and bright colors are just a few elements students may include in their own Rizzi inspired cityscapes. They are turning out so creatively!
4th Grade
Grade 4 artists are beginning a long, more advanced, weaving unit. We reviewed weaving terminology from second grade such as loom, weft, and warp. Students will learn how to create more intricate weavings with designs of their choosing by learning how to change colors, create diagonals and shapes. We connected this lesson to the history of weaving from around the world, a practice that goes to ancient times.
5th Grade
5th grade completed an origami project where they created "squash books". They were able to choose patterns for their book covers and the colors for their pages. They then were able to explore with different watercolor painting techniques to fill in the pages of their origami book. Next, we are moving into an observational drawing unit to hopefully build up our skills and confidence in drawing from life. We are using pumpkins as the subjects of our still lives and the artists will be learning how to use charcoal to shade and create value to add more dimension and realism to the pumpkins.
