TVUSD Extreme Weather Guidance
2026-2027
Important Hot Weather Information
Dear TVUSD Families,
With temperatures potentially reaching 100 degrees or higher, the National Weather Service HeatRisk level may rise to Red — Major Risk. TVUSD will follow the District’s hot weather guidelines for days with temperatures above 100 degrees and/or when conditions reach a Red HeatRisk level.
A Red HeatRisk level means that heat-related illness is possible for anyone without access to effective cooling or adequate hydration. Individuals who are active outdoors and those who are especially sensitive to heat may face an increased risk.
To help protect the health and safety of our students and staff, TVUSD will implement the following hot weather precautions today:
What will change at school today?
Recess and Lunch
- Outdoor recess and lunch activities will be canceled. Students will remain in available indoor or cooled spaces and will continue to have access to drinking water.
Physical Education
- Outdoor PE activities will be canceled. Teachers will provide appropriate indoor or low-exertion alternatives when space and conditions allow.
Athletics and Outdoor Activities
- Outdoor athletics, practices, conditioning, and other student activities may be canceled, postponed, relocated, or rescheduled in accordance with District and CIF heat illness prevention guidance.
- Families participating in athletics or after-school activities should watch for additional information from their school, coach, or program supervisor regarding schedule or location changes.
How families can help
Please help your student prepare for today by:
- Sending a refillable bottle with cold water
- Encouraging your student to drink water throughout the day
- Dressing your student in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing
- Informing the school health office of any medical condition that may increase your student’s sensitivity to heat
Students with medical conditions, disabilities, or increased vulnerability to heat-related illness may receive additional accommodations and priority access to appropriate indoor relief areas (following all individualized health plans, Section 504, or IEP accommodations related to extreme heat/weather).
Watch for signs of heat related illness
Please remind your student to immediately tell an adult if they experience:
- Dizziness or weakness
- Headache
- Nausea
- Muscle cramps
- Unusual tiredness
- Confusion
- Hot, flushed, or dry skin
Staff will monitor students and respond promptly if a student shows signs of heat-related illness.
Thank you for helping us keep students hydrated, informed, and safe during periods of extreme heat.
