MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
CHS Community,
Grades were finalized this week for the first quarter! Please take some time to review your student’s progress and either celebrate their successes or develop plans for improvement as needed. Here’s a quick look at how our students performed during the first grading period.
Number of Students Weighted GPAs:
Above a 4.00 - 226
3.50 to 3.99 - 245
3.00 to 3.49 - 222
I’m thrilled to recognize a group of seniors who, by achieving a 3.0 GPA or higher this past quarter, now qualify for late start/early dismissal. Congratulations to each of them for their hard work and dedication!
I’d also like to highlight the accomplishments of our volleyball team over the past two weeks. The team recently competed in a 5-set thriller against CVCA, ultimately finishing their season as Division III district runners-up. After their impressive playoff win, students were rewarded with cell phone privileges in study hall on Wednesday.
Regarding the AM Drop-off Line, I’ve recently received concerns about student tardies and detentions. To ensure a smooth morning, I’ve been closely monitoring the drop-off line all quarter. While there are some busy moments, there’s no backup on Maple or Canfield by 7:29 each day. Please remember that students must be in their classrooms and ready to learn by 7:35 AM; simply being in the building by this time doesn’t mean they’re considered on time. We provide each student with two “grace tardies” to accommodate the occasional challenging morning.
Attached below is a graph showing our average drop-off times in five-minute increments.
FAMILY FUN NIGHT, OCTOBER 31
Continuing our tradition, October 31 is "Spend Time With Your Family Night!" Teachers will not assign homework that evening, giving students the chance to enjoy time with their families. We’re also reaching out to local businesses to support this initiative with special discounts, so stay tuned for more details!
HALLOWEEN SPIRIT WEEK NEXT WEEK!
We’re looking forward to a fun Halloween Spirit Week with some very creative themes from our Student Council. As we enjoy the festivities, please remind students to be mindful of their costumes and dress throughout the week. Our goal is for everyone to participate comfortably, without needing any changes for school-appropriate attire. Friday's Freaky Friday will be interesting to see students dressed as staff, and staff dressed as students.
CLASS OF 2024 PARENTS/GUARDIANS
The Chardon Local Schools has been working to prepare graduates for post-secondary success. Referred to as the 4E's, all graduates should be prepared for: Enrollment in further education, Employment, Enlistment, and/or Entrepreneurship.
The District, in accordance with ORC ( 3302.03) and in compliance with the Ohio Department of Education, is collecting information from graduates from the Class of 2024 regarding their post-secondary activities.
We encourage families to share our SURVEY with their child who graduated from Chardon High School as part of the Class of 2024.
BUILDING ACADEMIC SCHEDULE

FROM CLASSROOM TO KITCHEN
Mrs. Tekavec's class transferred their learning in the classroom to a different classroom.
IMPORTANT ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION for CCP STUDENTS
Due to changes in FERPA expectations and athletic eligibility, ALL students taking CCP classes must have their Quarter 1 grades verified by their Professor(s). This includes classes taken within Chardon High School taught by our teachers, CCP classes taken off campus at Lakeland/Lake Erie/Kent, and CCP classes taught online.
The CCP Eligibility Report Sheet is available in Guidance and Athletics. Students must have passing grades within their CCP classes, verified by their Instructors, at the end of each Quarter in order to be eligible for the proceeding Quarter. These are the same eligibility expectations for students taking non-CCP courses.
Students taking our in-house CCP classes will be given this form the week of 10/28. Students taking CCP classes off campus are responsible for picking up the form. Forms must be returned to Doug Higham in person or via email to douglas.higham@chardonschools.org.
ROTARY STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Kayla Schneider, who was nominated by Mrs. Patterson for the Chardon Rotary Club Student of the Month. This prestigious award recognizes students who exemplify a strong commitment to service and leadership in their community. Kayla's dedication to her academics, CHS, and the Chardon community as a whole make her a deserving recipient of this honor.
CLSD PARENT STUDENT HANDBOOK
Please click the banner below to review the updated and recently Board of Education-approved CLSD Parent-Student Handbook. This handbook is published annually to help ensure a safe and productive learning environment for students, staff, parents, and visitors. It outlines students' rights, responsibilities, and the consequences for misbehavior. Included in the district handbook is an addendum specific to Chardon High School. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact the school administration.
CHS SCHOOL COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
Financial Aid Night, November 7th
The Counseling Department invites parents of seniors applying to college to attend the Financial Aid Night on Thursday, November 7th from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. (CHS location TBD). Our LEAF (Lake/Geauga Educational Assistance Foundation) Advisor, Christine Jankowski, will be presenting information pertaining to this year's FAFSA and scholarships.
AP Exam Registration & Ordering
College Board has set the AP exam fee at $99 for the 24-25 school year. These AP Exam fees will be added to student's Infinite Campus fees this week for students taking an AP course and need to be paid by the AP Exam ordering deadline which is Nov. 15th.
If your child IS NOT planning on taking the AP exam associated with their AP course, they need to have a conversation with their teacher, and reach out directly to me before the order is submitted on Nov. 15th. (in-person or via email). Once the AP exam order has been submitted on Nov. 15th, any changes to that order will result in a $45 charge.
Students that qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch/Meal Benefits will have their AP Exam fee waived. If you feel that you may qualify for these benefits, please complete the Meal Benefits application through your Infinite Campus portal.
FREE MATH TUTORING
The Educational Service Center offers free math tutoring after school to any student in Lake or Geauga County at multiple locations (Hale Rd ES in Painesville and Cardinal High School). Please see the link for more information. The Lake County Flyer is attached. The Geauga County Flyer was not available.
IMPORTANT COLLEGE APPLICATION REMINDERS
November 1st is the most common Early Action deadline for schools followed closely by November 15th and December 1st. Many schools currently have application fees waived to encourage students to submit their college applications before the Early Action deadline. Take advantage of these! Be sure to check the university's website for applicable codes.
Below are some helpful reminders to keep you on track to meet your deadline.
- Double check all of your deadlines and make sure you are ready to submit your application a solid week before the deadline so you don't run into any last minute technical issues.
- Don't wait to submit your application! You should submit your application when you are finished with all your components. Your letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc. will be sent through Naviance but do not have to be submitted at the same time as the application.
- Make sure to communicate your deadlines to your recommenders. All parts of your application must be received by the university by the deadline or else it won't be considered a complete application. It helps to ensure that your Bio Form has been completed in Google Classroom so the counselors and recommenders have access to all your activities and other information.
- Log into Naviance and make sure you have connected your Common App AND requested your transcripts. We do not receive a notification until a student has requested their transcript. This is the most commonly missed step of the process in Naviance. Also double check that you have sent the recommendation letter request through Naviance so your teachers can upload and submit the documents.
- If you are submitting your SAT or ACT score, double check the institution's website to see how they accept the scores. Many universities will only consider scores that are sent directly from CollegeBoard or ACT.
As a reminder, the school counselors have college application help sessions every Friday in the media center. This is a great opportunity to bring your Chromebook and work on your applications - even if you don't have questions!
Happy applying!
