Conroe ISD Early Childhood Department

Welcome to Prekindergarten!
Prekindergarten is a special year filled with new experiences—making friends, learning classroom routines, becoming more independent, asking questions, and discovering new things each day. Children learn through play, hands-on experiences, conversations, and meaningful interactions with their teachers and classmates.
Whether this is your child’s first experience with school or your family has been part of Conroe ISD before, we are excited to partner with you throughout the year. Together, we can help your child build confidence, independence, curiosity, and a love of learning.
How Your Child Learns in Prekindergarten
Our PreK learning experiences are aligned with the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines and support the whole child, including:
- Language & Literacy: Building vocabulary, listening and talking with others, recognizing letters and names, and beginning to write
- Math: Counting, sorting, comparing, noticing patterns, and exploring numbers in everyday activities
- Science: Asking questions, making observations, exploring, and using their senses to learn about the world
- Social & Emotional Development: Building relationships, taking turns, expressing feelings, following routines, and solving problems with others
- Physical Development: Developing coordination, balance, strength, and the fine-motor skills needed for activities such as drawing, cutting, and building
Simple Ways to Support Your Child at Home
You are your child’s first teacher, and everyday moments at home provide wonderful opportunities for learning! Here are a few quick, simple routines and activities you can enjoy together to help your child build confidence, independence, and important Prekindergarten skills.
📖 Read Together Every Day
Spend a few minutes reading a picture book together. You can also look at pictures, talk about the story, or point out words and signs you see during the day.
Try asking:
- “What do you think will happen next?”
- “What do you notice?”
- “Why do you think that happened
💬 Talk About Their Day
Conversations help children build vocabulary and learn how to share their ideas.
Instead of asking only, “Did you have a good day?”, try:
- “What did you play with today?”
- “Who did you play with?”
- “What made you smile today?”
- “What was something new you tried?”
✍️ Make Name Practice Fun
Help your child recognize and write their name during everyday play. Try:
- Writing their name with sidewalk chalk
- Making their name with magnetic letters
- Creating a simple name puzzle
- Writing their name in shaving cream on a tray
🔢 Find Learning in Everyday Activities
Learning can happen anywhere! Invite your child to:
- Count snacks, toys, or steps
- Look for letters and numbers on signs
- Sort laundry, toys, or household items
- Look for patterns in clothing, buildings, or nature
🎒 Practice Backpack Routines
Let your child practice packing and unpacking their backpack.
Talk together about:
- What belongs in their backpack
- How to open and close the zipper
- What goes to school and what comes home
- Where to put their backpack when they get home
Give your child time to try these routines independently. It is okay if it takes a little longer!
Remember: Learning at home does not have to feel like school. Talking, reading, playing, exploring, and helping with everyday routines are all ways children learn.
