PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Good Morning Pride,

This week is full of opportunities to celebrate and support our community! As we continue Education Go Get It Week, let’s remind students of the power of education and the doors it opens for their future. On Thursday, we also have our Spirit Night at Liberty Burger starting at 4:00 PM—bring your flyer so that a portion of proceeds comes back to Lipscomb.

And don’t forget that North Texas Giving Day is happening this week. This is a huge opportunity for our PTA and school to gain support that directly benefits our students and programs. Please help us spread the word to families and friends so we can maximize our impact.

Thank you for your energy and dedication—our students feel it every day.

🎯 Classroom Setup Update

As we sharpen our alignment between planning and instruction, please ensure the following expectations are met in your classroom this week:

  • TEKS must be written out and annotated/highlighted, with the verb clearly called out →

  • Learning Objectives (LOs) must align to the TEKS.

  • Please note that, often, those listed in our IPCs may need revision before posting and referencing during instruction.

  • Student tasks must align to the verb of the TEKS

To monitor fidelity, we will begin conducting sweeps Tuesdays and Thursday mornings to check for accurately posted TEKS.

🎯 Student Goal Setting and Family Data Talks

Student goal setting builds accountability, gives students a concrete tool to track their progress, and helps them see what they have mastered and what they still need to learn. Through teacher–student conferences, students can develop SMART goals with clear instructional steps, and can articulate their goals and progress when asked. We are pushing this initiative district-wide and will be held to the following standards:

  • Teacher–student conferences must take place to guide goal development.

  • Student Goal Sheets must be organized and show evidence of tracking (Samples).

  • Student Goal Setting must be completed by September 30.

Please note that the referenced data may include STAAR/EOC, i-Ready, MyPath, etc.

We must also hold family data talks to share outcomes from SY 24-25 and any current student progress with families. Family Data Talks must either take place by September 30, or be scheduled and announced for October by this same date. I shared your slide deck templates earlier today.

NEW INFORMATION NEW INFORMATION

Campus Committees

  • Campus Committees will be sent out later today!

Operational Reminders:

RECESS:

Recess is an important time for students to recharge and play safely.

Please remember:

  • Teachers should be actively monitoring students at all times — not on phones.

  • Move around the area to ensure strong visibility and supervision.

  • Ensure students have plenty of water, especially on hot days, so everyone stays safe and healthy.

HALLWAYS:

  • Only one student should be out of your classroom at a time.

  • All students must have a hall pass when in the hallway.

  • To maximize instructional time, limit individual bathroom breaks and adhere to the classwide break times outlined in the master schedule.

Let’s work together to keep our hallways safe, orderly, and focused on learning.

BREAKFAST FORMS

✨ Friendly reminder, teachers: please complete the breakfast form each morning by marking all present students and making sure they pick up their breakfast.

Vaccine Village Clinics

The HCM Benefits Department is excited to announce the return of Vaccine Village Clinics for all District employees! From October 1 through December 12, 2025, your teachers and staff can receive important seasonal and preventive vaccinations at various District locations.

You can help us by posting the Vaccine Village flyer at visible locations throughout your campus such as the bio-clocks, breakrooms, and other common areas. Registration for your employees is as easy as scanning the QR code on the flyer accompanying this communication.

With flu season around the corner and symptoms that can resemble COVID-19 getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect yourself, your teachers and staff, and their loved ones. These clinics are designed for your employees’ convenience, offering easy access to essential vaccines right at your workplace or a campus near you.

2025 Sponsor Training

  • How to access the training: From the Dallas ISD Portal select the Cornerstone Icon. Once in Cornerstone you will see the search bar in the upper right corner, enter the course name; 25/26 SPONSOR/STAFF ACTIVITY FUNDS TRAINING. Once the training has been identified from the menu options, click on it. When the training opens click LAUNCH. The training will now open in a new window, and you may begin.
  • Once a passing score of 80% or better has been received, you will receive a certificate via email. Please provide Ms. Valadez a copy of the google certificate for recordkeeping in the event of an audit/campus review.
  • Note: You must use your district credentials to log in and take the quiz, located on the final slide. Upon passing, please allow 24 hrs. to receive your certificate.

Fall Field Trips

  • Each grade level is expected to plan one field trip per semester.
  • Fall Field Trip Form Deadline - October 24th
  • All field trips forms MUST be submitted to Ms. Valadez at least 20 instructional days prior to the trip. The last day for field trips is May 3rd. I spoke with Ryan from PTA, and they are sponsoring two field trips. One in the fall and one in the spring per grade level. More information regarding forms will be send next week.

Testing News

  • SMCs will take place next month, October 6–8, 2025, in SchoolCity.
  • SchoolCity has launched a redesigned Student Portal, which now includes sections for Launchpad, Tests, Scores, and Reports. Please visit the Assessment webpage and show the instructional video to students so they are familiar with the updates.
  • The SMC testing protocol will be shared soon.

Student Activities Sponsors/Coaches Needed!

We’re looking for teachers to step up and lead our UIL student activities this year! These are stipend-paying opportunities that not only support our students’ growth but also strengthen our campus culture. Student clubs and extracurriculars are where kids discover their passions, build confidence, and develop skills that last a lifetime. By sponsoring a UIL event, you’ll play a key role in giving our students opportunities to shine beyond the classroom and showcase the Pride across Dallas ISD.

Please reach out to Ms. Timms, our Campus Activities Coordinator for questions!

Instructional Focus: Amplifying Student Voice

Thank you for your commitment to excellence last week. Our focus this week will be to increase student voice in each classroom by:

  • Providing at least 3 opportunities for checks for understanding, especifically "turn and talk" in every lesson, and ensure that each student is participating in the conversation.

  • Asking open-ended questions at key points to check for understanding.

  • Circulating the classroom while students are engaged in discourse and calling on a variety of students to share their thinking.

We will be conducting our learning walks next Tuesday and look forward to see your students in action. Let’s continue to provide our Lions with rich opportunities to speak, reason, and shine in their learning.

Math, the PRIDE way!

Math Teachers – PRIDE Practices

We are so proud of how much our math practices have grown here at Lipscomb! Based on classroom walks from week 4, here are some reminders using PRIDE that will keep our work ready to serve our mathematicians!

P – Planned and prepared
Learning goals and classroom activities are aligned to the verb of the standards!
➡️ Example: 5.4E states, “represent and solve multi-step problems involving the four operations with whole numbers using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.” This means our mathematicians should be solving and representing their thinking in class, not just computing answers! Representing looks like models, strip diagrams, number bonds, etc.!

R – Real world connections
How can we make the content relevant for our students and their interests? Connect math to money, sports, food, games, or community issues to deepen engagement.

I – Inquiry-driven
There is so much power and learning in a best-fit question! Make sure your teacher toolkit includes:

  • Closed questions (check for understanding)

  • Open-ended questions (allow multiple strategies/answers)

  • Problem questions (real-world or multi-step scenarios)

D – Draw it out! (Read – Draw – Write) (This should be an anchor chart in ALL math rooms!)
Students should move through the Read–Draw–Write process when problem solving. This supports comprehension and builds habits of making sense before computing. Encourage students to sketch models, strip diagrams, or number lines before writing equations.

This is also supports Concrete → Representational → Abstract (CRA) progression:

  • Concrete: manipulatives (base-10 blocks, counters, fraction strips)

  • Representational: drawings, diagrams, or visual models

  • Abstract: equations and symbols

E – Exemplars in hand!

We have to be clear on what we expect from students during independent practice. Exemplars should be used to model strong work, set success criteria, and give in-the-moment feedback to students.

📘 Book Study at a Glance - Hacking Questions: Hack 1 - Assume All Hands are Up!

🔑 Structure of the Book

Each chapter follows the “Hack Learning” format:

  • The Problem – what’s not working in current practice

  • The Hack – a practical strategy to fix it

  • What You Can Do Tomorrow – easy, actionable steps

  • Blueprint for Full Implementation – how to scale and sustain the strategy

  • Overcoming Pushback – how to respond to challenges

  • The Hack in Action – examples of what it looks like in classrooms

On the preview, we will review the "problem of practice", "the hack", then the "actionable steps"!

Probing Question: What is the purpose of the CFU (the Checks for Understanding)?

Hack 1: Assume All Hands Are Up

This week, we’re diving into Connie Hamilton’s Hacking Questions with Hack 1: Assume All Hands Are Up. The premise is simple but powerful: instead of relying on hand-raising, build lessons with the expectation that every student will engage. When only a few voices dominate, others remain passive—but when we assume all are accountable, engagement and equity rise across the classroom.

What You Can Try Tomorrow:

  • Teach students multiple response formats (think-pair-share, blurt time, stop & jot).

  • Use volunteers intentionally, not as the default.

  • Communicate that everyone is responsible for thinking—then use equity sticks, digital tools, or partner talk to ensure all participate.

  • Adjust how you phrase questions to invite thinking from the whole class.

  • Set up your seating to promote discussion and accountability.

This shift isn’t about abolishing hand-raising—it’s about making engagement the norm, not the exception. When we assume all hands are up, we create classrooms where no student is left out and every voice matters.

  • Staff Needs Assessment
    • Please complete the Staff Needs Assessment to help Ms. Green and the Guidance Committee plan for the year.

Clinic's Corner

My daily medical procedure in the TC classroom has changed from 1:50 PM to 2:35 PM to 12:50 PM to 1:35 PM. This will give me adequate time to see students in the clinic towards the end of the day.

For our records, please always enter a Google e-pass for any student requiring clinic services. While I am in the TC classroom, please notify the office of any urgent or emergency situations.

I will evaluate any other students when I return to the clinic.

Sincerely,

Nurse Wilcox
