Director's Message / Mensaje del Director

Hello to our outstanding Custodial Services Team,

We have arrived at December, and as the semester quickly draws to a close, I want to express my profound gratitude for your efforts over the past few months. Your commitment to safety and the new SOP compliance has led to a noticeable improvement in equipment care and inventory control. That consistency is a testament to your professionalism.

Focus on Security and Precision

The weeks ahead are demanding as we support the final events of the year and prepare for the holiday closure.

This month, please ensure your entire team is focused on three critical areas:

  1. Campus Security: Work closely with your administration to ensure all non-custodial areas are secured immediately after the last school day. Double-check all windows, exterior doors, and lights before exiting for the break. Your role in protecting our district assets over the holiday is vital.

  2. Operational Precision: Maintain focus on the daily tasks. Precision in chemical dilution, dwell times, and machine settings is crucial for maintaining our facilities and preventing any last-minute issues. Let's finish the semester with the highest level of detail.

  3. Safety and Rest: Do not rush the work. Maintain focus on proper ergonomic techniques and PPE use. We want everyone to finish the year safely and return refreshed.

Thank you again for your hard work and dedication. I wish you and your families a safe, warm, and restful holiday season.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

¡FELICES FIESTAS!

Upgrading Our Approach: Introducing the Charging Bucket System Upgrading Our Approach: Introducing the Charging Bucket System

William Prats-Palerm, M.Ed. - November 12, 2025

The way we traditionally mop our schools is about to get a major upgrade! We are in the process of a department-wide transition from traditional mop and bucket systems—which require constant wringing, rinsing, and disposal of dirty water—to the highly efficient Charging Bucket System. This shift is not just about adopting new equipment; it's a strategic move to standardize our cleaning processes, maximize the life of our microfibers, and ensure we are always applying the precise amount of chemical solution needed. This innovation will directly improve our efficiency, cleanliness standards, and, most importantly, the ergonomic workload for our entire team. Let us explain the WHY.

Using charging buckets instead of traditional mopping in schools means using a system where pre-moistened microfiber pads are stored in a sealed bucket, ready for use. This method replaces the need for constantly refilling a mop bucket with dirty water and is designed for efficiency, hygiene, and safety by eliminating the need to manually wring out mops.

How it works

  • Charging the pads: Microfiber flat mop pads are placed into a sealed bucket with a cleaning solution. The bucket is then sealed and shaken to ensure all pads are evenly dampened without being soaked.
  • Pre-moistening: The pads are pre-moistened and stored in the bucket, making them ready for use at any time. This eliminates the need to mix solution and dip a mop head in the water each time, a process that can be both time-consuming and unhygienic.
  • Hands-free operation: A cleaning staff member can simply grab a pre-moistened pad from the bucket and attach it to a mop handle, perform their cleaning, and then detach the used pad without touching the mop head or wringing it out by hand.
  • Storage and disposal: Used pads can be stored in a separate "discharge" bucket for later washing, and the charging bucket is then ready to be refilled.

Benefits in a school environment

  • Improved hygiene: The system prevents cross-contamination by ensuring a clean, pre-moistened pad is used for each area. The sealed bucket also keeps the solution contained and clean.
  • Increased efficiency: Cleaning staff can work faster because they have a supply of ready-to-use pads readily available.
  • Better for staff: It reduces the physical strain and risk of injury associated with traditional mopping, such as repetitive stress injuries from wringing out heavy mop heads.
  • Reduced chemical use: Many systems use less cleaning solution per pad compared to traditional methods, leading to a more sustainable process.

This move represents a significant investment in our cleaning quality and staff efficiency. The transition to the Charging Bucket System, guided by clear new SOPs, will immediately reduce cross-contamination risks, ensure our cleaning solutions are applied with chemical precision, and drastically cut down on the physical effort associated with old-style mopping. We look forward to rolling out the necessary training on this new, streamlined process, and we are confident that this upgrade will empower every custodian to achieve a higher, more consistent level of cleanliness across Cleveland ISD.

Former school janitor becomes principal of elementary school

By Yi-Yun Yu / Published August 31, 2022 / GMA

A former school janitor-turned-teacher has become the principal of a California elementary school.

Mike Huss says he feels "blessed" to have had such a fulfilling career so far and is excited to start a new chapter leading Ione Elementary School in Ione, California, a small city about 41 miles southeast of Sacramento.

"I am blessed. I truly am and I don't do anything special. I just show up and work hard. I show up and try my best," the 55-year-old told "Good Morning America."

Huss has only been principal for about two weeks but he already has a lot of support from his school district -- Amador County Unified School District, which appointed him to the role -- his school staff and his young students.

"They give me hugs and say, 'You're doing a great job,' and it's really cute to see a first grader tell you that. 'You don't even know what I'm doing. But thank you very much for saying it.' But they see me out and interacting so I think to them, that's all that matters," Huss said, who added that the school is "a wonderful place to be because of the kids."

Huss has had a long history with Ione Elementary, which is home to approximately 540 students. He attended the school as a young boy and for the last 19 years was a teacher at his alma mater in the first, second and fifth grades.

But before he started teaching, Huss was also a janitor at Ione Elementary.

As a janitor, he made an effort to connect with students. Huss said teachers at Ione were the ones who first encouraged him to pursue a teaching career.

"A lot of teachers here at Ione Elementary kept saying, 'You're wasting your time. Look at these kids. They are attracted to you … and they want to be around you and they learn from you. You need to go back and became a teacher,'" Huss recalled.

At first, Huss wasn't sure if he wanted to change jobs and try something new. After all, he'd taken the school janitor job because he didn't want to pursue higher education and wanted to work so his wife Karen could go to college. But after he and Karen married and had their first child, he said he found his why.

"When my son was about 3, I said, 'You know what? I want to show my son that you can keep growing in life,'" Huss said. "I know he was young but between the encouragement from the teachers on campus and the motivation to do something to show my son [that] nothing's impossible, I went back to school in the late '90s to get my teaching credential based on those inspirations."

Huss became a working dad, juggling his full-time job with family and school for four years, so he could achieve what he set out to do.

"I was working 40 hours a week, coaching my niece's softball team. I was going to school Tuesday and Thursday all day," Huss recalled, adding that he would work from 2-11 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays when he attended Sacramento State during the day.

Those efforts paid off and Huss said after he graduated, he got a job teaching at Ione in less than a week.

"I was literally the school janitor on a Monday. I worked a double shift. I worked from 6 a.m. till about 10 p.m. that night, getting the school ready. The very next day, Tuesday, I was in my first teachers' meeting. Thursday of that same week, I had my first class," he said.

Huss called teaching "a very rewarding career" and said his message to others now is to support schools and teachers.

"What I want people to understand is that there are really good teachers out there doing really amazing jobs," he said. "It's just about growing a world, making it a better place."

As for his new role as principal, one he was initially "shocked" to be offered, Huss said he's taking it all in one day at a time.

"I really think that I can do this job … because I have the support of everyone," he said. "I have to try my best every day for them. And at the end of the year, I've told many people if the worst thing I say is, 'I tried my best and fell,' I'll try my best again next year and hopefully be even better. And I try to keep that perspective."

Simplemente me presento y trabajo duro.
