HMLS Family Newsletter
From the Interim Principal, Dr. Rubén Carmona 06/02/2023
Happy Friday!
Happy June!!! We are only 2 weeks and a half away from the end of the school year!!! We have a lot of upcoming fun activities planned for the students and families to enjoy.
We want to send out a huge thank you to the families that have volunteered for the field trips and all the families that have signed up to help out during Field day!!! Reminder: Please see the previous ParentSquare post from the HMLS PTC from 5/15 to sign up to volunteer for field day. Volunteers are needed from 8:00 am- 12:30 am to run stations.
We appreciate your support, time and dedication to be a part of our school community. We are always better together!!
Husky Heroes: Congratulations to our Husky Heroes of the week who continue to uphold their CARES Value Pledge!! (see pic below).
June is Pride Month: Pride Month is a month-long celebration of the history, culture, and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people and their communities. HMLS is dedicated to the inclusiveness and acceptance of our LGBTQ community. Please take a look at the infographics found on our school website with facts about Pride Month and information on why June is the month of Pride!
Spring Concert: is on Wednesday, June 7th, 2023 at 12:40 PM on the playground behind the school! I hope many families will be able to attend. All students will sing one song and perform one dance. The concert order will be as follows:
1. First grade will sing and dance
2. Kindergarten will sing
3. Preschool will sing
4. Kindergarten and Preschool will dance together
5. Second grade will sing and dance
6. Third grade will sing and dance
7.Fourth grade will sing and dance
8. Chorus will sing
9.Fifth grade will sing and dance.
The concert will be approximately 45 minutes long. Any parent who wishes to dismiss their child after the concert is kindly asked to inform teachers in writing the MORNING of the concert. Students who are dismissed from school will need to first return to their classroom, and will be dismissed by their teachers at the end of the concert. Parents who do not inform the school of dismissal ahead of time will need to report to the office and wait for their child to be sent to the office.-Musically, Jeanine Anderson.
Special Olympics Day: SPS will be hosting the 3rd Annual Special Olympics Unified Game Day on Thursday, June 8th at Captain John Bertram Athletic Field from 9:45-11:00 AM. As a school, we are committed to inclusion and equity and we want to make sure our students understand the importance and significance of this event. HMLS will be going on a walking field trip to Captain John Bertram Athletic Field to cheer on our fellow classmates. We will be celebrating athletes from different programs throughout the district through inclusive programming and adapted athletic events.
This is the schedule we will be following for the field trip:
- Grades 2, 3, 4, 5: Leave to Bertrand Field by 9:00 AM and depart to HMLS by 10:00 AM (walking)
- K-1 9:45-11:00 AM
Volunteers: We are seeking parent volunteers to assist students from 2nd-5th grade with walking over to the field so we can cheer on members of our community who are participating in this fantastic event! K-1 students will not be walking, they will be taking transportation to the field and if your child is in grades K-1, you are more than welcome to meet us at the field.
Please note: You do need a CORI to volunteer, so you will need to fill one out ASAP to volunteer for this field trip. If you have already filled one out this year, then you do not need to fill another one. It is only for families that wish to volunteer but haven't filled out a CORI form yet. If you need a CORI, contact the school main office. You will need a copy of your ID. If you're able to volunteer, please contact our Family Engagement Facilitator, Ms. Arias Reyes via ParentSquare or at mariasreyes@salemk12.org.
The Husky Herald: Our Newspaper club had another successful publishing party Thursday, June 1st. Congratulations to all of the Husky Herald staff for their hard work!!! There are a few copies of The Husky Herald in the main office and they're first come, first serve. But not to worry a pdf copy will be uploaded to our school website soon!!! (see pics below).
Lost and Found: Please be sure and check the lost and found (located in the main lobby) for any items that may be yours. There are a lot of coats and sweaters accumulating!
Cellphone Policy: As a reminder there are no cellphones allowed in school. Students may keep their power off cellphones in their backpacks, but they are not allowed to use them during the school day. If we see a student with their cellphone out in the classrooms, hallways, and/or cafeteria, the cellphone will be confiscated and returned at the end of the school day.
Have a fantastic weekend!

Families!
It is essential that all students are in their classroom at 7:50. This time is used to set the structure of the day for students and begin our social emotional learning time. This ensures students are ready to begin the day and meet their full potential. Please use the HMLS absentee line to communicate any and all absences: 978-740-1290.
Attendance Matters
Students who are tardy are missing an average 36 mins of instructional time a day!
Looking at this chart: if a school's starting time is 7:45am and a student arrives at 8:01am will miss 16 minutes of instruction. The same student will have missed 20 minutes at 8:05am and 30 minutes at 8:15am and at 9:12am would have missed 1 hour and 27 minutes.
A presença é importante
