Halloween Fun in D303 Halloween Fun in D303

It’s been a month full of fun, memories, and smiles across D303 as we build up to Halloween and some Fall festivities!

The Anderson Trunk or Treat Event was a huge success, with so many families and students attending. The trunk decorators went all out, hosted fun games and activities for students, and there was even a spooky woods station for students and families to check out.

At Davis, their PTO created a fun Boo Pong for teachers to play for goodies. They also held a pumpkin-decorating contest among staff, and students voted on their favorites: 1st place went to R2D2, 2nd to the Poison Apple, and 3rd to Dog. Earlier this week, the Davis Kindness Club visited the Pearl of St. Charles for a Halloween parade and delivered personalized Halloween cards to the residents, who were very touched by the happy smiles and fun costumes.

This year’s FEARson Fest was a great hit. The amazing PTO went all out with parent and staff volunteers setting up decorations, photo ops, and activities for all. Special shout-out to all the families who attended and/or donated candy, and to the fantastic vendors, the City of St. Charles Police Department, and Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District for attending and supporting us.

A highlight for many students, staff, and families was wearing their fun, creative costumes, Halloween colors, or school spiritwear on October 30. From costume parades to class celebrations, activities, new spooky book selections, and more, students and staff had a great time participating in the Halloween festivities. Thank you to everyone who helped make this October memorable for our students, staff, and families, and we wish you a safe and Happy Halloween!

Kindness Caterpillar at Richmond Kindness Caterpillar at Richmond

As part of the new Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, Richmond students began by focusing on kindness. Building on this initiative, the Richmond Student Council proposed a schoolwide project to spread kindness across the school community. Say welcome to Rocky, the Kindness Caterpillar, located near the bus loop just north of the main office.

Rocky and the outdoor space have become a fun place for students to spend time outdoors, build new friendships and memories, and discover new ways to make the school a better place where everyone can belong.

Congrats to the Richmond Student Council group for turning learning into action, and to all Richmond students for showing that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference.

"Firefly Lullaby" Author Meets with D303 Fireflies "Firefly Lullaby" Author Meets with D303 Fireflies

Author and illustrator Kenneth Kraegel visited the Haines Early Childhood Fireflies for an interactive storytime. During his visit, he read his books, Firefly Lullaby and This is a Book of Shapes, to students. Throughout the session, students engaged directly with the stories as Mr. Kraegel brought the whimsical tales and vibrant artwork to life. They also learned about his writing process, discussed their favorite books, and talked all things art and drawing.

Between the morning and afternoon storytime sessions, he joined the Early Childhood staff for lunch, offering teachers and staff a chance to connect and discuss creative ways to foster early literacy and a love of reading in young learners. Huge thanks to Anderson Bookshops' Authors-in-Schools program for sponsoring this wonderful opportunity for our students.

Kenneth Kraegel is a self-taught artist with a unique style and a wonderfully fresh perspective. He created the companion books Mushroom Lullaby and Mermaid Lullaby, among other great works. In addition to creating books, he also tutors children with reading challenges, such as dyslexia.

Chili Cook-Off Brings the Heat Chili Cook-Off Brings the Heat

The Transition Program’s 5th Annual Chili Cook-Off was one to remember! With 9 chilis entered, the most ever, this year’s competition was exceptional in preparation, taste, and execution.

Congratulations to our 2026 Chili Cook-Off winners:

  • 3rd Place: Pumpkin Chili — Christina’s Class
  • 2nd Place: Spicy Bertha Chili — Frankie’s Class
  • 1st Place: Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Chili — Jen’s Class

Our young adults put so much effort into every step of the process. They researched recipes, made their own adjustments, brought favorite recipes from home, planned grocery lists, shopped for ingredients, and prepared their chili from start to finish. Their creativity, teamwork, and dedication truly shone, and we couldn’t be more proud of everyone who participated.

A huge congratulations to Jen’s class for taking home first place! Thank you to all of our young adults and staff who made this year’s cook-off such a success.

This Halloween season, the SCN Theatre Club is collecting food instead of candy!

On Friday, October 30, 2026, SCN Theatre Club students will head into the community, going door-to-door with a simple request: “Trick or treat… got any food to spare?”

Instead of collecting candy, students will be collecting non-perishable canned and packaged food items to donate to the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

What Can You Donate?

Non-perishable food items such as:

  • Canned vegetables and fruit

  • Canned soups and beans

  • Pasta and pasta sauce

  • Peanut butter

  • Cereal

  • Macaroni and cheese

  • Other shelf-stable, non-perishable foods

Please make sure all donated items are unopened and not expired

Want to Help Before the Trick-or-Treating?

There will be food donation drop-off boxes in the offices of Student Life, the CCR, the student cafeteria, and the LRC at St. Charles North High School, giving students, staff, and families another opportunity to contribute to the drive. Drop-off boxes will be available starting on 10/1.
