Caring for Your Family During the Teacher Strike
A Note from the Counsellor
As we continue through this time of uncertainty due to the teacher strike, I want to reach out from the heart of the Counsellor’s Corner to offer care, encouragement, and some helpful resources to support you and your children during this time.
While this pause in the school routine may feel unsettling, it can also be a time to slow down, reconnect, and nurture both emotional and mental well-being at home. Below are some thoughts and suggestions I hope will be helpful.
🧠Prioritize Mental Health & Emotional Well-Being
-
Talk About It: Have age-appropriate conversations with your child about the strike. Let them express how they feel and validate their emotions.
-
Keep a Routine: While school routines may be disrupted, maintaining a basic structure to the day can provide comfort and predictability.
-
Mindfulness & Calm: Try short daily activities like breathing exercises, journaling, or guided meditations (apps like Smiling Mind or Headspace for Kids can help).
📚 Stay Engaged in Learning
While formal lessons are on pause, children can still learn and grow in meaningful ways through everyday activities. Here are some fun and low-pressure ways to keep their minds active:
- Daily Reading Time: Encourage your child to read independently, read aloud together, or even listen to audiobooks as a family.
- Write for Fun: Kids can keep a journal, write letters to friends or relatives, create comic books, or make their own storybooks.
- Explore Interests: Let your child dive into something they’re curious about—animals, space, cooking, music, or even how things work.
- Do Life Skills Together: Cooking, folding laundry, budgeting, planning meals, or gardening are all learning opportunities.
- Ask Questions Together: Look things up, explore "why" questions, and talk through your child’s ideas. Follow their curiosity.
- Build & Create: Use blocks, Legos, recyclables, or household items to build something imaginative—or even solve a real-life problem.
- Play Games: Card games, puzzles, and strategy board games build thinking skills in fun, relaxed ways.
- Involve Them in Planning: Let them help make a schedule, create a family activity list, or set simple goals for the week.
