SSL Opportunity - Digital Citizenship Week

Students can view videos with their MCPS accounts (or on YouTube) and complete a form to earn SSL hours! The form does not open until October 19th and will close October 23rd, but students can watch the videos and record their responses on this tracker in advance. However, only submissions through the form from 10/19 - 10/23 will earn SSL hours. This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss digital safety and responsibility with your family as well as to earn SSL hours. 8th grade students attending a field trip that week should plan ahead so they don’t miss the opportunity to participate!

Attention to our English Language Development students!

Every fall, our ELD teachers send notices to parents and families of students who are receiving English Language Development services. This year, we will streamline that process and have all of those letters available for acknowledgement on ParentVUE beginning the week of 10/12. If you would not like your child to receive services, please indicate that on ParentVUE or contact their English Language Development teacher soonest. In addition, we will notify parents and students about accommodations that they will receive this school year for both classroom and testing settings. You are also welcome to contact Ms.Mesina, our ELD Content Specialist, at: Shannon_L_Mesina@mcpsmd.org with any questions.

Minority Scholars Program Highlight

Last Thursday, Eastern’s Junior Minority Scholars Program hosted students for the first of three Loteria-themed events. Participants enjoyed playing the game Loteria to learn about Mexican/Mexican American culture as a way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. We also used Loteria card designs as a way for students to discuss their identity here at Eastern in preparation for our first big project expressing and revisioning Eastern Eagles' character traits, goals, abilities, values, and roles ahead of the 75th anniversary. We will have the second event on Thursday, 10/16. If you know a student who may be interested in participating or just learning more about opport unities with the Minority Scholars Program, please reach out to Ms. Hall in room 607.

Thank you to the volunteers who have helped organize and maintain the closet, and to the generous donors who have supplied items, including Eastern Staff & Families, Overflow City Church, I Support the Girls and Leveling the Playing Field.

And a very special thank you to the MCPS Educational Foundation for the generous grant we received last school year. That funding allowed us to purchase the bins, racks, and organizational materials that helped us turn this space into a functional, welcoming resource for our students.

Board of Education Receives Update on School Closure and Consolidation Study

On Thursday, Oct. 8, MCPS updated the Board of Education on the elementary and middle school closure and consolidation study, including why the work is necessary, how the process will unfold and how the community can participate.
Important: No schools have been selected for closure, no recommendations have been made and there is no predetermined outcome. Community engagement begins Oct. 19—months before the superintendent is expected to present recommendations to the Board.
Read the full story for engagement dates, what to expect, the decision-making timeline and the facts families should know.

Board Moves School Calendar Proposals Forward for Public Comment

The Board of Education received a presentation on Oct. 8 outlining proposed school calendars for 2027–2028 and 2028–2029 and moved the proposals forward for public comment and feedback. A key feature of the discussion was a two-year calendar approach, designed to give families and staff greater ability to plan ahead by establishing major calendar dates earlier.
Under the approach, the Board would adopt the next school year’s calendar while tentatively setting major dates, such as the first and last days of school and winter and spring breaks, for the following year. The community will now have an opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed calendars, with final adoption scheduled for Nov. 19.

Regional Center High School Center Programs: Fall Showcases Begin in October

MCPS is expanding access to specialized regional high school Center programs, giving 8th grade students more opportunities to pursue programs connected to their interests while continuing to offer rigorous programming at every local high school.
Center programs span five areas: Medical Science; International Baccalaureate, Humanities & Languages; Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM); Leadership & Public Service; and Visual & Performing Arts. Additional Middle College dual-enrollment opportunities are being explored in partnership with Montgomery College.
Eighth grade families can start exploring this fall! High schools across all six MCPS regions will host Fall High School Showcases throughout October, beginning Thursday, Oct. 1. These events are a great opportunity for students and families to visit schools, learn about programs and courses, meet staff and begin thinking about the high school experience that best fits their interests and goals.
As a reminder, the six regions Showcases are scheduled at schools throughout the Southern, Eastern, Central South, Central, Central North and Northern regions.

  • Watch: MCPS High School Opportunities Presentation — available in English and Spanish

  • See the full Fall High School Showcase schedule and find the event near you.

Middle School Program Changes Delayed One Year

MCPS is delaying any changes to the middle school Program of Study until the next school year, allowing additional time for review, engagement and thoughtful implementation. The proposals under consideration include 60-minute core classes and more consistent elective offerings across middle schools. No changes will be implemented this school year.
Why it’s happening: After testing several scheduling scenarios, MCPS determined that implementing the changes next school year would present significant logistical and operational challenges, particularly across schools of different sizes. Current budget considerations are also a factor. Delaying implementation gives MCPS time to better understand final Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) requirements, continue working through scheduling and staffing implications, and make a more informed decision before moving forward.
See the presentation video here.
