October - Courage

Our character trait for October is Courage — being brave enough to try new things and do what’s right, even when it’s hard. At home, encourage your child to share a time they were brave. Ask: “What is something new you’d like to try, even if it feels a little scary?”

At the end of the month, one student from each classroom will be recognized at our school assembly for showing courage.

The Great California Shake Out is coming up! On October 16, our school will join millions across the state in practicing earthquake safety. This annual drill helps students and staff learn how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” to stay safe during an earthquake. Alarm bells may sound and we are going to practice safe exit and search and rescue. We anticipate this drill to take 30-minutes. It’s a great opportunity to reinforce emergency preparedness in a fun and educational way!

🚨 Stay Informed with TUSD Alerts 🚨 🚨 Stay Informed with TUSD Alerts 🚨

In an emergency, clear and timely communication is essential — and Torrance Unified School District (TUSD) has a dedicated website to keep families and the community informed.

If an emergency situation ever occurs, parents and guardians should visit www.tusd.org/alerts for the most accurate and up-to-date information. This site will serve as the district’s central hub for emergency updates, so please bookmark it on your phones and other devices.

During a real emergency, Principal Guidi and all school staff will be focused first and foremost on keeping students safe. This means updates from the school level may be limited, as staff will be directly supporting and supervising students.

The school communicates with the district office through the Raptor App and text messaging, allowing the district to post verified updates quickly to the TUSD Alerts page. In the unlikely event that cell service is unavailable, our walkie talkie system provides an additional layer of communication between the school and district.

By visiting the TUSD Alerts page, families can receive the most current and official information — without waiting for an individual message to come through.

Remember: https://www.tusd.org/alerts — bookmark it to all your devices now for quick access.

📸 Picture Retakes 📸 📸 Picture Retakes 📸

What to expect on picture day

  1. Any student wishing to have a retake should bring their original picture package to exchange for the retake image.
  2. When an order is placed online, the parent/guardian will receive a camera pass via email. This can either be printed or texted to the student and brought to picture day. The photographer will photograph the printed camera pass along with the student.
  3. If a student is not able to print their camera pass, that is not a problem. We will match up the student to their order manually in the production process.
  4. A parent may order from the flyer up until 24 hours after picture day. After 24 hours, the online ordering access may close. This will allow our imaging team to "Pull" all orders submitted and match them with the students photographed.
  5. When pictures are returned to school, all students that purchased pictures will receive their prepaid package. Any student that was photographed but did not order a package, will receive a "Proof" (PX) of their picture that was taken on picture day.

All proof packages offer parents a second opportunity to order prints. All orders are subject to shipping and handling costs of up to $8.50 and will be shipped directly to home.

Our Invite-Only Parent Conferences will take place on Thursday, October 16, and Friday, October 17, 2025. These meetings are designed to bring together educators, families, and, when appropriate, students to identify challenges early and create a plan for success.

Please know that these conferences are proactive, supportive, and collaborative—not disciplinary.

During your child’s conference, we will discuss one or more of the following focus areas:

  • Goals to support students who are not yet meeting grade-level academic expectations

  • Goals to support students whose behaviors are not yet meeting classroom or school expectations

  • Goals to support English Language Learners (if applicable)

If your child’s teacher feels that a conference would be beneficial, they will reach out to schedule a time to meet.

As part of Walteria's commitment to safe and effective digital learning, Torrance Unified School District asks all families to be familiar with our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). This policy outlines how students are expected to use school technology responsibly—both to support academic success and to ensure a secure, respectful online environment. Here's what families should know:

  • Privileges: Access to TUSD Network / technology can be revoked if rules are broken. All use is monitored and subject to review by school staff.

  • Acceptable Use: Technology must be used for school-related activities only—no inappropriate content, use, or unauthorized software.

  • District Responsibilities: The District works to keep systems secure and reliable, but cannot guarantee full protection or accuracy of online information.

  • Web & Email Policies: Student work and photos may be shared online, but only with limited identification. School email is for academic use and monitored by staff.

  • Personal Responsibility: Students must report misuse, keep their login secure, avoid damaging or altering systems, and use technology in ways that are safe and respectful for all.

These guidelines help ensure a safe, productive learning environment for all students. For the entire AUP, please click here.

As we start the new school year, please remember the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System is available for students to share safety concerns anonymously. This tool helps protect individuals who may be at risk of harming themselves or others. Families and students can access the reporting system via our school website or directly at https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/say-something-tips

We will be launching the Friendship Club once a week during lunch starting in October. Friendship Club is a student-driven, teacher-led school inclusion program focusing on the development of organic friendships between all students. Our program is designed to teach students how to harness the power of friendship through social-emotional wellness activities, art, science, physical fitness, and social skills enrichment. When students are making meaningful connections with peers, they are not only learning to build greater peer acceptance in the classroom, but they are also fostering a greater understanding of each other with a sense of safety and well-being on each school campus. This is a completely optional activity, but we would love to have your student join.
