Dear Emerson Families,

As we begin April at Emerson Elementary, our state testing season is upon us. Our students have worked diligently all year long building their skills, strengthening their understanding, and growing their brains in every subject area. These assessments are simply an opportunity for them to show how much they have learned and how far they have come. We encourage our families to remind students to do their very best while also helping them keep testing in perspective. Confidence and a positive mindset go a long way. When students feel calm and supported, they are able to focus and truly demonstrate their growth.

Families play an important role in helping students feel prepared and confident on test days. A good night’s sleep, eight hours or more, before each testing day helps students think clearly and stay focused. A nutritious breakfast on the morning of the test provides the energy they need to do their best work and fuels their brains. Just as important is maintaining a calm, supportive atmosphere at home. Speaking words of encouragement and reminding your child you believe in them can make all the difference. Let them know their effort matters, that they are capable, and you are proud of how hard they have worked all year long.

Our character trait for April is Collaboration. At Emerson Elementary, we are teaching students that collaboration means working together respectfully, listening to one another’s ideas, sharing responsibility, and encouraging teammates to succeed. Whether students are solving a math problem, completing a science project, or participating in a group discussion, collaboration helps them learn from different perspectives and build stronger solutions together. We encourage families to talk at home about the importance of teamwork: how listening, kindness, patience, and cooperation help everyone grow. When students learn to collaborate well, they are not only stronger learners, but they also become thoughtful leaders and supportive friends.

We serve PreK - 6th Grade students.

Collaboration in elementary school is a powerful way for students to grow both academically and socially. When students work together, they learn to share ideas, listen to different perspectives, and solve problems as a team, skills that are essential not only in school, but throughout life. Collaboration builds communication skills, strengthens critical thinking, and teaches students how to respect and value the contributions of others.

Key behaviors we encourage include active listening, taking turns speaking, sharing responsibility, staying on task, and offering encouragement to peers. Just as important are the mindsets behind those behaviors: believing everyone has something valuable to contribute, understanding mistakes help us learn, being open to new ideas, and recognizing success is stronger when it is shared.
