KHS community,

Another great week here at KHS.

Remember the school day on the 23rd will run from 7:45 - 11am only. A specific schedule for the day will be forthcoming next week. I've also attached a schedule for mid-terms and finals for Semester long classes.

We'd love to increase the level of participation for families on our TNTP survey. Please follow the link below to share your opinions. We're listening and always hoping to improve.

The TNTP Parent survey link is here and a QR code is above.

***A special reminder to seniors taking the semester long English classes. Remember that your class ends on January 16th! You need four full credits of English to graduate, so it is REALLY important to pass all of those classes!

Peace,

Scott Tombleson (He/Him/His - What is this?)

NEWS FROM THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT NEWS FROM THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

A FREE summer program for sophomores and juniors interested in the outdoors and leadership

Friends of Baxter State Park offers the Maine Youth Wilderness Leadership Program FREE for selected participants. For nearly two decades, this Program has cultivated and inspired the next generation of Maine's environmental leaders by offering a nine-day wilderness experience in Baxter State Park. Participants grow their understanding of wilderness through science, art, storytelling, photography, writing, history and recreation. The application deadline is February 8. It is available online at friendsofbaxter.org/mywip. If you have questions, please reach out to Cass Stewart at Cass@friendsofbaxter.org.

Students 16 yrs of age and older interested in a possible career in construction

AGC Maine, The Construction Association offers two great ways to get your start in construction. This week they launch their AGC Maine Scholarship and Maine Construction Academy Immersion program applications!

Below is the link to the 2026 scholarship application for any student pursuing a post-secondary degree in construction or a construction related field. Students will be able to upload a photo, their essay, and a copy of their current transcript. Application deadline is March 1, 2026.

Also included is the link for the Maine Construction Academy Immersion Program. The Academy offers summer construction immersion programs for students that provide basic certifications and hands-on career exploration experiences. This program does not require that students live within the district in which it is offered, so students should feel free to explore nearby programs.

Students need to be 16 years old to participate in the program as it is a certified pre-apprenticeship with the Maine Department of Labor.

Here is a link that provides more info about the program: bit.ly/mca_2026

If you have any questions, please reach out to Dawn Plossay, Workforce & Training Programs Administrator at 207-314-2350.

SMCC Work Force Training

Are you unsure about what you want to do after you graduate from KHS? And/or, want to build skills? Check out SMCC's Work Force Training. A lot of opportunities do not have a cost associated with them and the length of learning is shorter than four year university programs.

Course Registration is now OPEN for Semester 2 Early College courses

If you want to take an Early College course at one of Maine's 7 community colleges or in the University of Maine System, the registration portals are open, so review the offerings and sign-up soon.

A few things about Early College courses:

  1. You NEED to fill out the Alternative Academic Credit Form (also attached) before your School Counselor can approve an Early College class.
  2. You need to get Admin and parent/guardian approval as well.
  3. You need to sign up two weeks before the start of the class. This is an Early College requirement.
  4. Some community colleges have courses that start mid/late into the spring semester, BUT that means a semester class is squeezed into eight weeks.
  5. You can only take an English class that covers your 12th grade graduation requirement beginning the summer before your senior year.
If you have any other questions or need help signing up, please reach out to your School Counselor.

APPRECIATION COMMITTEE UPDATE

Help us spread some holiday cheer by contributing to our 2nd Annual KHS Teacher Cookie Exchange!

When to Drop Off:

Please bring cookies to the KHS Front Office on:

• Thursday, December 18 (before 3 PM)

• Friday, December 19 (morning)

What to Bring:

• 2–3 dozen cookies or treats (bite-sized is great!)

• Your holiday favorites! We’re hoping for a fun variety, such as:

• Traditional: sugar cookies, chocolate chip, snickerdoodles, crinkles, etc.

• Creative/Unique: family recipes, festive bars, or your signature holiday treat

• No need to individually wrap. Please bring them in containers by the dozen.

• You may pick up your containers at the end of the day, or feel free to use a disposable tray.

Our teachers will get to create their own festive assortment, and your contribution will make their holiday season a little sweeter.

Thank you for supporting our KHS community—your baking helps show our appreciation for the incredible work our teachers do!
