We had a blast celebrating American Education Week! It was wonderful to welcome so many families to Springton Lake and give you a glimpse into your child’s daily schedule. Our annual 6th Grade Thanksgiving Luncheon once again proved to be one of the biggest and most well-attended events of the year. A huge thank you to our Food Service Department and the many central office departments who dedicated their time to make this event such a success.

On Monday, our National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony also brought another packed house as we proudly welcomed our newest scholars.

Thanksgiving Break begins after school on Monday, November 24. At Springton Lake, we believe breaks are for recharging - so no homework, projects, or studying will be assigned. Teachers will also be unplugging, so we ask that you please hold emails until we return on December 1.

Enjoy the time off, take a moment to relax, and have a very Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Springton Lake!

Sincerely,

Ryan Buterbaugh

Principal

National Junior Honor Society Information

Eligible 8th graders will be invited to apply for the National Junior Honor Society in the fall. To qualify, students must have attended Springton Lake Middle School for at least one semester during the previous year and earned a final average of 90% or higher in all classes.

Invited students will submit an application documenting extracurricular activities, community service, and leadership. A faculty committee will review all applications based on scholarship, leadership, citizenship, character, and service.

Selected students will be inducted in the fall and are expected to maintain strong academics and participate in service projects throughout the year.

Our fall parent–teacher conferences will take place Monday, November 24 (afternoon/evening) and Tuesday, November 25 (all day). Conferences will be held in person. Virtual meetings via Zoom are available upon request for families who need this option. Each appointment is scheduled for 15 minutes.

If you were unable to secure a conference time, please contact your child’s grade-level school counselor and Team Leader. They can assist with scheduling a meeting with teachers, though this may need to take place after the Thanksgiving break.

Please note: There is no school for students on Tuesday, November 25, and Wednesday, November 26.

Student Council is once again sponsoring our holiday Joy Drive during the month of December. This is an opportunity for us to come together to purchase gifts for families in need in our school community. Students may take a snowflake tag from our Spartan Giving Tree or from the board in front of the Main Office. The snowflake tags have gift ideas indicated. Please return gifts (unwrapped) with the snowflake in a gift bag by December 8th. We appreciate your support of this project!

Springton Lake’s Annual Turkey Trot is scheduled for Monday, November 24th. In order to promote whole school involvement, the Turkey Trot will be held during the SCHOOL DAY! All students are welcome to participate - all they need is a partner! Prizes will be awarded for each grade level, and there are three categories for teams: Boys, Girls, and Mixed. Any students who are not running will be spectating and cheering on their peers. Please have your child dress for potentially cold weather.

Along with the Turkey Trot, the Community Service Club will be sponsoring a canned food drive from now through November 21st. Featured below are pictures of some of the items collected.

Each homeroom will collect canned goods/essential items, and the homeroom for each grade level that collects the most cans, will receive apple cider donuts for breakfast on Monday, November 24th!

Parents are invited to come to cheer on your children. The schedule is as follows:

7th grade = 10:45am

8th grade = 12:20pm

6th grade = 1:45pm

As part of our ongoing implementation of Restorative Practices in our school, we are planning to administer a short survey to our 8th grade students on Monday, December 1st. The Renaissance Fundamentals survey will help us to better understand students' experiences at our school. The survey will take about ten minutes and will be administered during the Core Extension period. This same survey was administered in their 6th and 7th grade school year. We hope to be able to compare the three results to identify trends over time. HERE IS A PREVIEW of the survey. If you have any concerns or would prefer that your child not participate, please send Mr. Buterbaugh an email.

To keep classrooms focused and learning uninterrupted, all wireless devices, including cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, and similar devices, must be OFF and AWAY during the school day unless a teacher gives a specific academic reason to use them. Students will be reminded each morning to power down their devices.

Please let your child know that you will not be texting or calling during school hours. If a student needs to reach a parent, a staff member can provide permission. In an emergency, the main office is the best way to get in touch. More details are available in the Springton Lake Student Handbook.

Thank you for helping us create a safe, distraction-free learning environment!
