Panther Pride News is published weekly to keep all members of the school community informed and involved.

Yesterday, Thursday, February 16, Mears Middle School held the 2022-2023 School Spelling Bee. There were 30 contestants in total that participated, showing representation from all six Collaborative Teams. The top spellers completed 18 rounds of words. The top three spellers were as follows: In third place- Alex Maciejewski; in second place- Mikayla Belger, and in first place- Maddie Eschbacher. Maddie will take the qualifying test during the week on February 27 to see if she can advance to the Anchorage Regional Spelling Bee.

A special thanks to Ariana Aramburo from KTUU News for being the moderator for Mears.

Counselors are so excited to bring our “Overcoming Adversity” to Mears next week in an all school assembly. Motivational Speaker (and father of a middle school student) will be sharing his personal story in an engaging, entertaining and informative way. Lonnie uses humor and authenticity to communicate to youth. Lonnie will be discussing ACES or Adverse Childhood Experiences and how childhood trauma can impact your life. Dimond High School cordially invites Mears' 8th graders and their families to the Dimond Freshmen Fair. This occurs on Tuesday, February 28th from 6-7:30 PM at Dimond High School. During this exciting event, students will be able hear from all of the department chairs and many other staff about the exciting curricular and extracurricular offerings at Dimond High.

The Anchorage School District's Fine Arts Department is proud to present the 51st annual student art show, in celebration of National Youth Art Month. Student work will be on display around our community March 3 - April 7, 2023. The opening reception will take place at the Anchorage Museum on Friday, March 3, 2023 from 6:00-9:00pm. Admission is complimentary to the public.

Tuesday, February 14th was the kick-off for the Read What You Want Book Club. We will meet every Tuesday, during lunch; everyone is welcome. We will talk about what everyone is currently reading, give suggestions to each other on what to read next, talk about favorite reads, themes, and whatever else we think up.
