Principal's Update
Kia ora e te whānau,
As we head into another action-packed stretch of the term, there is a distinct buzz across our school grounds. Next week, our athletes, coaches, and managers head off to represent us at the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Winter Tournament Week, travelling to all corners of New Zealand.
Our Sports Office is currently meeting with coaches and managers to help them prepare for the week ahead. Beyond the competition itself, we have been reinforcing the importance of representing our kura with pride - competing with heart, striving for victory, and showing humility and dignity whether we win or lose. Staying with teammates and travelling across the country creates some of the absolute best memories of a young person’s school life. Let’s make sure this week is unforgettable for all the right reasons!
We owe a massive debt of gratitude to our coaches, managers, and supporters; school sport simply wouldn't happen without the incredible generosity and goodwill of our volunteer community. I hope you find the experience deeply rewarding, and that our students make every moment - from the long travel days and shared meal prep to the late-night strategy sessions and injury management - truly worthwhile for you.
Ghosted Premiere
Our incredible Drama Department, in collaboration with a group of talented students, has put together a feature film titled Ghosted.
While our performing arts crew will not be traveling for tournament week, they have dedicated an immense amount of time and effort to every stage of this project - from the initial writing and storyboarding to the filming and directing of this feature film.
Date: Monday, 14 September, 6pm
Venue: Petone Lighthouse Cinema
Tickets: $20, Available from the HVHS Resource Centre
Be sure to grab your tickets early to support our phenomenal student filmmakers and actors on the big screen!
Looking at our students packing their gear and fine-tuning their performances for filming, this week reminds me of why these extra-curricular moments matter so much. Years from now, our rangatahi won't necessarily remember every tactic board session or script revision, but they will remember the laughter in the vans, the shared meals, the nerves behind the camera, and the feeling of belonging to something bigger than themselves.
To all our tournament teams, coaches, and managers: travel safely and give it your absolute all on the field. To our performing arts crews: thank you for the vision and creativity you have poured into your work. We are so proud of how you all represent our school with mana and respect.
Ngā mihi nui,
Denise Johnson (Principal)
Update from the Student Leadership Team 2026
Kia ora koutou! At the end of last term we introduced the HVHS United Form, to offer an opportunity for students to share their experiences, ask questions or give feedback to the 2026 Student Leaders. We launched this initiative because we felt that the best way to represent the student body was to hear directly from them.
Thank you to everyone who submitted the form. All responses were reviewed, and we greatly appreciate the questions, constructive feedback and compliments. Over the coming weeks, the Student Leadership Team hopes to tackle some of the common themes we noticed. Keep an eye out for updates in the following newsletters!
Spotlight on a Learning Area: Mathematics
What’s Happening in the Classroom
It's a busy time in maths classrooms across the school. Years 9, 10, and 11MATR (Mathematical Reasoning) classes are deep into algebra, building the foundations that are essential to every year of maths ahead of them. Our 11MATM (Mathematical Methods) classes are beginning their second internal, which for some students is a great alternative method to getting their Numeracy qualification. And our senior students are working hard, some preparing for Calculus or Statistics exams, others racing to finish off their last internals.
New Maths Curriculum
This year marks the rollout of the new Year 9 and 10 mathematics curriculum, and their teachers have been working hard to make sure every student is set up to succeed under the new framework. The new curriculum places a stronger emphasis on algebra and problem-solving, building these skills earlier than before. However, staff and students have settled into it well and are working hard to make it work.
Numeracy
CAA Numeracy exam results came out at the start of the term, marking many Year 10 students' first taste of an NCEA assessment. For those that didn't pass, there are plenty more opportunities and other avenues to get Numeracy. The next assessment window for the Numeracy exam re-sits is in Week 8 (see article below), and we want every student going in as prepared as possible.
Year 10 students have been emailed details about the dedicated google classroom and where to find resources to study for the exam, while we work on Algebra in class. Students in Year 11 and above should join the dedicated Google Classroom (code: 5xsk2rdf) for important notices and support about the numeracy exam.
HVHS Accelerated Pathway
We currently have many students taking up acceleration opportunities in Maths this year, with just over 80 students in Year 10 attempting the Year 11 Mathematical Reasoning NCEA exam a year early. The Maths Learning Area is running tutorials every Friday morning to help prepare for this, and turnout so far has been excellent. Forty-one students in Years 11 and 12 will also be attempting the Year 13 Calculus' Complex Numbers NCEA exam.
This year we also have seven students on track to complete studying the University of Canterbury's MAT198 course as distance learning students. This course covers a significant chunk of first year university Mathematics and it's so great to see them embracing the challenge and getting a taste of what university-level maths looks like.
For any questions about Mathematics Learning Area, please email Kasper Black (Head of Mathematics) at kasper.black@hvhs.school.nz
Year 12 Hospitality Get the Inside Scoop on a Winning Burger!
As part of their Culinary Competition unit, our Year 12 Hospitality students swapped the classroom for the cafe last week, walking down to Bellbird Eatery to meet award-winning chef and beef and lamb ambassador Chetan Pangam and sample his entry in this year's Visa Wellington On A Plate's Burgers competition, the 'Lamb-da rassa pao'.
The plan was to gather in The Dowse event space for the chef's talk, but with the sun peeking through, Chetan moved the group out onto Bellbird's deck instead. Students sat at the outdoor tables in the sun while he shared stories from his career in hospitality - what goes into a WOAP entry, and the small details that separate a good burger from a winning one.
Then came the part everyone had been waiting for: the tasting. Chetan's WOAP burger went down an absolute treat, washed down with copious amounts of coke, with students unanimously rating it a perfect 10/10. Beyond the (very tasty) burger, the trip gave students a genuine look at the industry standards, creativity, and consistency they'll be aiming for in their own team's burger and sides as they head into their own Culinary Competition later this term.
A huge thank you to Chef Chetan Pangam and the team at Bellbird Eatery for hosting our students so generously.

- Kiri Clendon (12PC) - 2nd Place in the Year 12 Japanese Final speaking on the similarities between Māori Whakataukī with Japanese Kotowaza (proverbs).
We'd like to congratulate our other participants who also delivered a speech in Japanese (no small feat!) and performed strongly: Libby Lloyd (10NL), Mila Vella (13MO) and Raya Gusman (12CP).
CAA Assessments - Helpful Info & Key Dates
Families with students sitting CAA exams were emailed in early August; this article is a friendly reminder of the key dates and provides information on the exams themselves.
CAA (Common Assessment Activities) exams are online tests and involve three separate tests, one each for Reading, Writing, and Numeracy. These three tests are co-requisites that students must pass to achieve NCEA. In Term 3 at HVHS, Year 10 students sit the Reading and Writing Test and have another opportunity to sit Numeracy if they did not pass it the first round. Students in Years 11–13 have the opportunity to re-sit any of the three tests if required.
Helpful Information
- If a student needs to borrow a device to sit their exam, please request a form by clicking here as soon as possible.
- General NZQA external assessment rules apply. Please check your device meets the NZQA specifications for digital assessments by clicking here.
- Students should aim to arrive 15min before the exam starts. Students may bring a pen, a clear pencil bag and a clear drink bottle. For Numeracy exams, students may also bring rulers and calculators (see the Maths Learning Area if you need one).
- For students with Special Assessment Conditions (SAC), please follow the instructions sent from the Learning Support team.
- Students must be in uniform.
- Students must go to timetabled classes when they are not in the tests.

Earthquake & Tsunami Preparedness: Important Reminder for Families
Living on the Pacific Ring of Fire means natural disasters are a real possibility, and with Hutt Valley High School (HVHS) located in a tsunami zone, preparedness is essential. Wellington Regional Emergency Management gives this advice: Long or Strong – Get Gone! If an earthquake is longer than one minute OR strong enough that it is difficult to stand, immediate evacuation is required as soon as shaking stops.
Student Assembly & Dismissal
In the event of a severe earthquake meeting this threshold, HVHS students have been instructed to evacuate out of the tsunami zone immediately. All students and staff will gather at Hutt Intermediate's School field. Students will be dismissed directly from Hutt Intermediate. Once safety is established, students must follow their family's agreed reunification plan.
Reminder - Discuss Your Family's Emergency Plan
Please talk with your child to ensure they clearly understand your family's emergency plan and know where to go once dismissed from the assembly site. To help with planning, Wellington Regional Emergency Management's has a helpful planning guide, click here to view it.

Volunteer Reader/Writers Needed to Assist Students!
We're looking for reader/writers to assist students with learning differences and disabilities during their exams and assessments. As a reader/writer you’ll get the satisfaction of helping support students with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, physical disability or a sports injury to their writing hand!
What’s involved? Volunteers are needed at HVHS during school hours, especially in September for year 10 & 11 literacy and numeracy assessments and from October to December for end-of-year assessments. A reader/writer might help for 2-3 hours each term or up to 10 exams a year. We’ll match your availability and willingness to our student’s schedules. You can also say no if a day/date doesn’t suit you. If you are used for the NCEA exams in November, then training and payment will also be provided by NZQA.
We’re looking for volunteers with clear spoken English, good reading skills, and either good handwriting or the computer skills to quickly type answers and navigate around an online exam.
Training will be provided, and acceptance is subject to a satisfactory Police check. Contact Sharyn at sharyn.heathcote@hvhs.school.nz to learn more. Please note - this volunteering opportunity isn't available to our current students.

HVHS Pride Week
This is a very belated article about the school’s pride week celebrations, which occurred in week 8 of Term 2. The purpose of HVHS Pride Week is to celebrate the diversity of gender identity, gender expression and orientations throughout the school community, and make students at HVHS feel comfortable being themselves.
The school’s Queer Straight Alliance ran free activities every lunchtime for students to participate in - which included face paint, nail polish, a pride concert, chalk drawings, scavenger hunt, wall of kindness, lolly scramble, queer-themed Kahoots and a wear your pride day. Students also made beautiful baking for a bake sale which raised $483 for InsideOUT (a charity supporting queer youth around Aotearoa).
Thanks to Karol Bastidas Ortega (10WSLN) and Emi Hudson (13WD) for photographing our events.
Filipino Language Week Update
Last week, the TALA Filipino Club celebrated Filipino Language Week with an afternoon of traditional Filipino games, a Guess the Song Challenge, and a Filipino tongue-twister activity on Tuesday, 18 August.
On Wednesday, Mentor Classes across Years 9–13 joined in the celebration by taking part in a Blooket quiz featuring fun, Philippines-themed questions. To finish the week, TALA held a shared lunch gathering, where club members each contributed a Filipino dish to celebrate and appreciate the Filipino language, culture, and community.
Let Us Know About Your Student's Recent Achievements!
Has your child achieved something amazing? We’d love to hear about and celebrate our students’ successes outside the classroom — whether in sport, music, speech, dance, or other activities.
If your child has a sporting achievement, please email the details to Kristi Tia (Sports Director) at sport@hvhs.school.nz. For all other achievements, contact Lana Goddard (Principal’s PA) at office@hvhs.school.nz.
Uniform Donations - School Skirts & Black Formal Trousers Needed!
We're currently running low on donated uniforms, especially school skirts and black formal trousers. If your student has outgrown their uniform or no longer needs it, please consider donating it back to HVHS.
We'll ensure it is passed on to a student who needs it or loaned to a student who needs a replacement uniform item for a couple of days. Any uniform items you wish to donate can be dropped to the HVHS Office, open Monday to Friday from 8am-4pm during term time.
HVHS Blood Drive - Donate Blood, Give Hope
Our Year 12 and 13 students have been learning about the importance of blood donation at this week's assemblies. On Tuesday, 1 September from 9:00am - 2:00pm the team from New Zealand Blood Service will be at HVHS running a Mobile Blood Drive. Students aged 16 and over who meet the criteria are able to donate. Students can book a time to donate at the Student Reception.
Parents, guardians and whānau are also welcome to drop in on the day and donate blood. Simply sign in via reception and come over to the Hall.
Please note: The Care of Children Act 2004 allows people 16 years and over to make their own decisions about whether or not they wish to give blood. Students may choose to donate blood at this session. The New Zealand Blood Service recommends that students discuss becoming a blood donor with their families. Learn more about donating blood at https://www.nzblood.co.nz/

Celebrate 100 Years – Support the Next Generation
To mark Hutt Valley High School’s centenary, we are proud to offer this limited-edition collection of commemorative wines, featuring a Shiraz, Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
Created as a lasting memento of this significant milestone, each bottle celebrates the people, memories, achievements, and connections that have shaped our school community over the past 100 years. More than a keepsake, every purchase helps invest in the young people who are part of our school community today. Funds raised will help create opportunities, remove barriers to participation, and ensure more students can access the experiences, connections, and personal growth that come from being involved in school life.
Whether you’re a former student, staff member, whānau member, supporter, or friend of Hutt Valley High School, your purchase helps honour our past while investing in the next generation. Raise a glass to 100 years, order your wine by clicking here.
HVHS Uniform Reminders & Warmer Options for Winter
Need New School Trousers & Shorts?
From the start of 2027, all students will be required to wear the approved school trousers and shorts, which will only be available for purchase through the Resource Centre. If you need to purchase black trousers or shorts, we strongly recommend purchasing the correct ones from the Resource Centre now to avoid having to buy another pair at the start of next year.
Warmer Uniform Options for Winter
As the weather gets colder, the Resource Centre has a range of warmer items for students, including jackets with hoods ($75), scarves ($40), beanies ($20), pair of merino socks ($16), black tights ($8) and pom-pom beanies ($30). All items are in stock and available to purchase.
Resource Centre Opening Hours
The Resource Centre's opening hours are Monday to Thursday during term time from 11:00am to 2:30pm, and it is closed on Fridays. For any questions, please email resource.centre@hvhs.school.nz.
Key Dates for 2027 Enrolment Applications
Enrolments for 2027 are now open for in-zone applications in Years 9-13, and out-of-zone applications for Years 10-13. All enrolments are completed online. Please note that out-of-zone applications for Year 9 are now closed.
We encourage families to enrol their child early. This helps us to plan for your student’s learning needs and ensures that your student will be in the first group to receive the email with subject selections (many subjects have limited spaces). For information on how to enrol and key enrolment deadlines please click here.
Kai Donations to Support Our Students
At HVHS we want every student to have the opportunity to learn and thrive. One of the ways we support this is by making sure students who arrive without breakfast or enough food for the day can access kai when they need it.
If you’re able to help, we are currently seeking donations of sandwich spreads, muesli bars and Up & Go breakfast drinks. Donations can be dropped directly to the School Office during term time, Monday to Friday, 8am–4pm. For any questions, you’re also welcome to email Claire Ross (Head of Wellbeing) at claire.ross@hvhs.school.nz. Ka nui te mihi.
