Dear Seth Low IS 96 Families,

We had another wonderful week filled with meaningful opportunities to support our students as they continue to thrive.

On Friday, January 23, our Model UN students attended the Model UN Conference at PS/IS 95. This experience allowed our middle school scholars to engage in thoughtful discourse and debate on global issues alongside students from four different schools. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented Seth Low. Special thanks to Ms. Agostino, for planning this meaningful trip. We look forward to hosting our own conference on March 18.

Also on Friday, January 23, our 8th‑grade NEST students participated in a circle with Seth Low alumni. Students asked insightful questions about the transition to high school and learned what to expect as they prepare for this next chapter. A heartfelt thank‑you to Jennifer O’Neill, Speech Therapist, for coordinating this thoughtful and impactful event.

To ensure our families were supported before the snowstorm, our amazing Community Schools Director, Sharea Thomas, and Parent Coordinator, Brenda Morales‑Salas, organized a food pantry distribution to ensure our community had essential supplies. In addition, Phil Ling, our tech support specialist, worked diligently to provide devices and internet-enabled equipment to students in need, allowing us to prepare for remote learning.

As we continue our NYC Reads journey, we will begin our Middle of Year Diagnostic Testing (i‑Ready) on January 29th. These assessments help us measure student progress and identify the specific support our students need in order to become proficient readers and learners. Student results will be shared with families and backpacked home by February 13, 2026.

As stated at the recent CEC meeting, our district will be adopting the Amplify Desmos curriculum beginning in the 2026–27 school year. Teachers and administrators from each school in the district participated in professional development sessions and demonstrations from multiple curriculum vendors and voted collectively to adopt Amplify Desmos. This curriculum was selected specifically because it includes embedded scaffolds and supports designed to meet the needs of all learners, including Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners. As a district, we will begin this spring to engage in professional learning and curriculum writing to ensure a smooth transition in September 2026.

Looking Ahead:

Monday, January 26 – School is closed due to inclement weather. Remote learning information was emailed to staff and families and posted on the grade‑level Lion’s Google Classroom pages. (See the Pivot to Remote Plan)

Tuesday, January 27 – Picture Retake Day

Tuesday, January 27 – PTA Meeting at 6:00 PM, followed immediately by the PAC Meeting

Thursday, January 29 – i‑Ready Math Middle of Year Diagnostic (Periods 1–4)

Wednesday, February 4 – i‑Ready ELA Middle of Year Diagnostic (Periods 1–4)

Thank you for your continued partnership in making Seth Low a place where every student thrives.

Cheers to creating limitless opportunities for our students and families.

With PRIDE and appreciation,
Christina Monfasani‑Voutsinas

Visual Art

The Seth Low Visual Art program is focused on developing fundamental art skills while letting students explore their creativity. We work with a variety of mediums including acrylic paint, clay, and watercolor. We also partner with and integrate the arts in various subjects to enhance engagement and motivation.

Musical Theater

In Musical Theater, you’ll learn the fundamentals of performing while building confidence, teamwork, and stage presence.

Each year, students take the stage in our Spring Concert and have the chance to audition for the Spring Musical.

Over three years, you’ll develop your performance skills and get ready to audition for specialized performing arts high schools by the start of eighth grade.

Whether you’re new to the stage or born for the spotlight, this class lets you explore it all—singing, dancing, and acting your heart out!, and acting your heart out!

Chorus

Chorus is a year-long elective where students develop vocal skills and learn the fundamentals of singing in an ensemble setting. Throughout the course, students explore proper vocal technique, breathing, harmony, and sight-reading while gaining a foundation in music theory to support their ability to read and understand written music.

Chorus students perform in the Spring Concert each year and are encouraged to participate in the Spring Musical. As a new addition to our performing arts program, the Chorus class provides students with opportunities to grow as musicians and performers while contributing to the school’s vibrant musical community.

Theater

Our Theater program is off to an incredible start!

In our general classes, we have just wrapped our first unit on ensemble—learning to work together and build a community of trust in order to create bold stories.

Theater Elective students just completed their very first on-camera “screen tests” and are now diving into rehearsals for our upcoming student film, Finding Alice, a filmed adaptation of Alice in Wonderland created by 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Theater Elective students.

We're so proud of the creativity and confidence our students are already showing, and we can’t wait to share their work with you!

Dance

This year the Seth Low dance program is focused on building students' technical dance skills and diving into the dance style of breakdancing!

In addition to learning dance steps and how to find rhythm, our dance program aims to help students build personal development skills. Our Seth Low students are building their confidence and dance moves!

We are excited for our community to see the incredible hard work we are putting in at our upcoming shows!

Band

Our Concert Band and Drumline programs are flourishing at Seth Low! Our Drumline is marching in local parades and community events and this year our Concert Band program is partnering with Jazz House Kids to do some beautiful deep-dives into the world of Jazz music.

Both groups have been visiting local elementary schools to perform and build connections in our district. We are looking forward to some trips with the orchestra students in the winter and to our spring performances coming up later in the year.
