What Is Guidance?
At Harlan High School, we recognize that school counselors possess a wealth of knowledge that is essential to the development and success of our students. Through our guidance curriculum, as outlined by the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling, we aim to support students in reaching their full educational potential. Each of our guidance lessons is thoughtfully designed to meet curriculum goals and competencies that foster the development of students’ knowledge, attitudes, and skills in alignment with their developmental stage.
At the high school level, our counseling program focuses on four key content areas, as delineated by the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs:
-
Intrapersonal Effectiveness: This area emphasizes self-awareness, self-management, and the development of emotional intelligence, equipping students with the skills to make informed and positive choices about their behaviors and relationships.
-
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Students are guided in cultivating healthy relationships, improving communication skills, and developing teamwork and conflict resolution strategies, all of which are essential for success both in and out of the classroom.
-
Post-Secondary Planning and Career Readiness: This component provides students with the tools to explore career opportunities, set academic and professional goals, and plan for success after high school, whether through higher education, vocational training, or entering the workforce.
-
Personal Health and Safety: Students are educated on maintaining their physical, emotional, and mental well-being, and are given the resources to make healthy choices regarding lifestyle, safety, and coping strategies.
By integrating these competencies into our comprehensive counseling program, we ensure that our students are well-equipped to navigate the challenges of high school and beyond, while fostering their personal, academic, and career growth.
