Civil War Day Civil War Day

Monday, June 8 is GVS’s Annual Civil War Camp Day.

Civil War Camp Day is a culminating activity for the 5th grade study of American History. The purpose is to give students a hands-on experience of what daily life was like for a typical Union soldier as well as a bit about children’s lives in the 1800s. This is an all-day event led by Ms. Bechta and Mrs. Berger, the 5th Massachusetts Battery (Ms. Bechta’s Civil War reenacting unit), and several parent volunteers. Our hope is that students will come away from this day with a higher level of interest in history, a deeper understanding of the hardships faced in preserving this great nation of ours, and an appreciation for their lives now and how to learn from the past to build a more intelligent future.

There will be 9 stations that 5th grade students will be rotating through in groups. Other classes are invited to listen in and enjoy as appropriate for their grade-levels.

The stations are: 1) Camp Life/ Bivouac (tents and gear, dress-up clothes, fire with army-food, music, and a journal writing activity), 2) Field Hospital (medicine and triage/first aid during the 1800’s), 3) Infantry Drill with musket firing demonstrations (drilling with mock-muskets part is closed to younger students), 4) Signal Corps (signals and communications during the Civil War), 5) Fun and Games of Long Ago, 6) Artillery Drill (on the 5th Mass. Battery’s 3” ordnance rifle, open only to 5th and 6th graders), 7) The Officer’s Tent. 8) In Memory of... featuring student-written eulogies and monuments the 5th graders made honoring the American heroes of the Civil War. This is the students’ culminating individual project. 9) The Artificer (blacksmithing on the Battery’s traveling forge).

The 5th grade students will be having a Civil War SONG BATTLE orchestrated by Mr. Hoeffs in the afternoon. After the song battle, Mr. Hoeffs will join the camp life station with lots of Civil War music and singing for all!

At approximately 2:40 pm, the 5th Massachusetts Battery will be doing a cannon firing demonstration firing three live rounds (no projectile, but a loud boom), followed by Taps played by students. Please be aware that the driveway to the school will be closed for the firing of the cannon until approximately 3:00 pm.

Please feel free to stop by and join the fun! This school-day event is open to anyone who wishes to experience the 1860’s first-hand. We are really looking forward to this final activity for our Civil War unit and hope to see you there!

If you would like to volunteer to help guide stations, we’d love to hear from you! Your child need not be in 5th grade to volunteer. We get returning volunteers across grade levels each year! Contact Deebee Bechta at dbechta@gvshawks.org

IF YOU DO NOT WISH YOUR CHILD TO VISIT THE CIVIL WAR CAMP, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER!

Thanks!

Ms. Deebee Bechta, Mrs. Astrid Berger, and Mrs. Kristen Reed
