College Awareness Month

January celebrates College Awareness month where students are participating in events that consist of a career cluster raffle, interacting with college students & graduates via a panel, and this Friday students will attend a culminating pep rally and basketball game to get a feel of what Homecoming feels like! MS 50 believes it’s never too soon to speak to our students about college and the possibilities that are available to them down the road!

Urban Word

Our Urban Word Residency provides a platform for critical literacy, youth development and leadership through free and uncensored writing, social impact and performance workshops & opportunities. Urban Word is the founder of the National Youth Poet Laureate Program, a renowned program that celebrates youth for their excellence as writers and their impact on their communities. Through the transformative power of the written and spoken word, Urban Word provides young, creative voices, often those who are marginalized, the tools, training, and platforms to rewrite the narratives that shape their lives and their communities.

Freedom Song Choir

This year, we began a new partnership with the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, piloting a new freedom song chorus with our 8th Grade Social Studies classes. Students have learned traditional freedom songs like "Wade in the Water" and "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me 'Round," while tracing their historical usage from the Underground Railroad to the Civil Rights Movement and into the present day. The chorus will perform for the school community at our Black History Month Showcase in February.

Brooklyn Boatworks

Our Brooklyn Boatworks residency is designed to replicate boat building techniques used in shipyards throughout the world. Students learn to work from blueprints, and use marine tools and materials. Students are also responsible for every aspect of the boat building process, ensuring that they learn from their mistakes and take ownership and pride in the successful completion of each phase of the boat build. We’re excitedly looking to launch our boat in the late spring of 2023 with MS 50 students onboard as the crew!

Fundraising Meeting WEDNESDAY

Washer and Dryer

We are excited to have purchased a washer and dryer to be used by anyone in the MS 50 Community! We have approval to install these machines but there are significant installation costs involved to retrofit the parent room to accommodate these machines. If you are interested in donating or helping to plan fundraisers please email our PTA President Ms. Southerland or attend the fundraising meeting on Wednesday.

Student Snacks

A successful and popular fundraiser is our daily snack sales during student lunch periods! If you are able to donate snacks to be sold during this time, please bring them to school and drop them off in the main office for Ms. Edda.

Advocacy for Additional Space

MS 50 is growing! We are adding more students every week and we need the space to give all our students the space to learn, grow, and thrive. If you are interested in participating in advocacy and organizing to gain access to additional classroom space, please complete the Google Form below.
