Halloween at CDW: Monday, October 31st

As in the past, the students and staff members are invited to wear their Halloween costumes to school. We will recognize Halloween at CDW on Monday, October 31st. Although teachers may engage students in Halloween-themed lessons/activities, we will follow a regular schedule.

When your child(ren) is choosing a Halloween costume, please remember:

  • The costume must allow the student to see to ensure safety.

  • If the costume has an accompanying weapon (knife, sword, gun, bow/arrow, etc.), your child may not be permitted to bring it to school.

  • Your child will wear the costume for the length of the school day so it should be something that allows him/her to walk and sit comfortably.

  • Costumes should comply with our dress code (page 6 of our Student Handbook).

  • Students do not have to wear a costume. Some students might opt to wear black and orange.

Harvest Kits Fundraiser Update

All Harvest Kits should have been delivered. If anyone has any questions or feedback, you can reach out to Melissa Del Rosso at lissa_delrosso@yahoo.com.

Grade 5 Science

In order to prepare for the study of Galileo, the astronomer who pioneered the use of the telescope, the students completed the Refraction lab in Ms. Osbahr's class. The students were able to understand how a telescope works by using a straight-edged and a curved-edged glass to observe what happens to a pencil and a drawn arrow when submerged in water.

Grade 7 Science: Escape Room

While reviewing the facts about plant and animal cells, the students were given the task of an Escape Room. The students needed to answer questions correctly and then use the Escape Room Decoder Key to figure out code to get to the next question. It took the first group about 20 minutes to succeed!

Reminders and Updates from CDW's Student Manager

TeenCAP (Child Assault Prevention) Project

Dear 8th Grade Parent/Guardian:

During the week of October 24, 2022, 8th grade students will be participating in the Child Assault Prevention TeenCAP project. TeenCAP was developed by the National Assault Prevention Center as a response to the violence in the lives of adolescents. TeenCAP aims to prevent assault against teens by training them to recognize and deal with potentially dangerous situations. CAP advocates preparing adults to recognize and care for youth who have been affected by abuse.

TeenCAP‘s community approach includes both adult and student programs:

Adult Education

The adult program provides information on assault against teens, identification of assault victims, reporting of abuse, and crisis intervention skills. For additional information, please go to the following resource www.NJCAP.org

* A virtual parent program: October 25th, 6:30 PM - LINK for the Program (Meeting ID: 857 2766 1933 PW-cap)

Student Workshops

The student workshop combines guided group discussion and a series of scenarios to focus on situations teens may encounter. Topics discussed include peer assault, sexual harassment, battering, dating violence, and sexual assault. Strategies emphasized to protect teens include self-assertion, seeking help from a trusted adult, and self-defense.

* Classroom workshops for students: October 26th, 27th, and 28th

If you have any questions regarding participation, please contact the school administration.

Thank you,

Tino Lauriello

CDW Soccer

On Monday, October 17th, the Knights defeated Demarest 4-3, and on Wednesday, October 19th they defeated Haworth 6-2. Chace Rosenfeld had a great game scoring four goals, and Tim Mahler added two goals. Carmine Porcelli chipped in with three assists and controlled the midfield. Every player contributed in their own way for the great win! The Knights then traveled to Northvale on Thursday, October 20th and defeated Northvale 2-1 to improve its record to 6 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. The goals were scored by Tim Mahler and Andres Antonopolous. The defense was once again solid, shutting down a late rally from Northvale. The Knights finished the week winning all 3 games they played. Great team effort Knights! The team plays again Monday away at Closter at 4:00 PM.

CDW Volleyball

The Volleyball team won Wednesday in 2 sets against Haworth. The Knights were able to win long rallies and finesse a lot of balls to win crucial points! Captain Alivia Badurina and Ella Ferraro were aggressive at the net while Finley Zimmerman and Leah Savino both had many big hits. As always, Ava Estevez slid across the court and kept dozens of hard hit balls in play. Layla Dyer, Ava DeAngelo, Megan Collins, and Gianna McGowan came up big with hard hit shots in the back and front rows. The Bailey West-Ava Richards duo made phenomenal plays and kept the team morale high. Olivia Galow was smooth with her serves! In an epic third match, Neha Anoo, Ginny Choi, Olivia Gashi, Sam Deluca, Layne Del Rosso, and Ava Candullo all battled in a 30 point game! The Knights then traveled to Northvale on Thursday, October 20th and although it was a great game, they fell short 25-22 in the last set.

Special thank you and shoutout to the bookkeeper, Jillian Baffer!

The Nex-Trex Plastic Film Recycling Program is Back!

We are collecting plastic film in the three containers outside of CDW. Once a month, from October through April, our CDW students in the Environmental Justice classes will retrieve the collection bags, weigh the contents, and track our collections. Our custodians will then bring our recycling to the collection center. In April, we will find out how our school ranked in the collection of recyclable plastic film. If we collect the most in our school size category, we could win another Trex bench for our outdoor classroom! Last year we collected 1,796 lbs of plastic!

Please see the flyer below for more information!

Dropping Off Forgotten Items

As you know, safety is always a first priority for our students. Now that the school year is underway, it's a good time to be reminded of the guidance, which can be found in the CDW Student Handbook which states: "Parents are encouraged not to bring forgotten articles to the school. In the event that a student requires a forgotten essential (i.e. medication, eyeglasses, a dietary need etc.), the parent should contact/report to the main office to arrange to have the item(s) delivered to the student. The school will not disrupt the morning or afternoon session to deliver Chromebooks, chargers, or other non-essential items to students during the school day."

Although we want your child(ren) to be successful in school and to have what they need to succeed, we also want your child(ren) to learn independence. We will continually work with your child(ren) on organizational methods if necessary. Just reach out!

CDW Clothing Drive: November 19th!

The PTO Grade 8 Committee will be hosting a Clothing Drive on Saturday, November 19th from 9:00 AM-2:00 PM. See below for specific information. Please do not drop off any clothing to the school before November 19th.

Students should either bring their lunch from home each day, or parents may order through one of the approved vendors for delivery to CDW. If you order lunch from an approved vendor for delivery, please make sure the vendor knows your child's first and last name and grade level. This will help to ensure your child receives their lunch on time. At times, we understand that a parent/guardian may need to drop off lunch at school.
