Blacklick Bulletin
Week of January 5, 2026 - Issue #21
Message from Principal Groves
Dear Blacklick Families,
.
Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful winter break with your family!
The month of January is action packed and we will be back and ready to learn at Blacklick when students return on Monday, January 5. We are excited to welcome our students back to the building!
This Friday, January 9 students will bring home their report card for Quarter 2. Please review the report card and sign the report card envelope. You keep the report card at home and send the signed envelope back to school with your child. Please contact your child's teacher if you have questions after reviewing the report card.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns at 614-759-5100 or by email at grovesk@gjps.org.
Respectfully,
Kristen Groves
One School/One Book Project
We are so excited to be kicking off our One School/One Book project with our students on January 5, 2026. Be on the lookout for more information about this wonderful school project coming home with your child on Monday! The goal of this project is to promote a love of reading with our students!
Cell Phone/Smart Watch Reminders
We want students to be engaged in learning and not distracted by devices. You may have seen that Ohio's new cell phone law was officially effective on January 1, 2026, however, there are no changes to our previously communicated expectations outlined in the Student Handbook. The expectations are listed below for you to review:
"CELL PHONES & SMART WATCHES - from the Student Handbook
Cell phones are permitted at school, but must remain off and in the student’s book bags throughout the school day. Smart watches are also permitted, but should only be used as a clock while at school. Students are not permitted to send or receive text messages or phone calls on cell phones or smart watches during the day. Additionally, photos may not be taken with cell phones or smart watches at school. On state testing days, smart watches are not permitted to be worn. If a parent/guardian needs to reach their student during the school day, they should call the school office at 614-759-5100. The school is not responsible for cell phones or smart watches that are lost, stolen, or damaged."
Related Arts Update! 2nd Grade Updates
PE in 2nd Grade
2nd graders have been working on their basketball skills, through a variety of skill based activities. Shooting is a big focus with shooting elbow in and holding their follow through. Students have also been working on dribbling in various games with a focus on keeping the ball waist high or slightly below.
Library in 2nd Grade
Last week, most of our students, including our 2nd graders, worked on BeeBots, robots shared across the district that students can program to move across a grid. They did well with them so we may be able to use them again sometime in the spring.
Music in 2nd Grade
2nd graders have begun preparations for the Be The Light Assembly that will be held at Blacklick on Friday, January 16th, 2025 (4th and 2nd graders will perform…see Mrs. Wolfe’s Talking Points announcement and Mrs. Groves’s newsletter for more information on how to attend!)
We are working on performance etiquette, singing with a group, and following the cues of a conductor!

Blacklick Staff Favorite Things
A list has been complied of the Blacklick staff's favorite things. It is important to understand the teachers are not asking for gifts. We know that many parents might want to get their child's teacher a gift and this list is to help you select something the teacher would like. Please do not feel obligated to buy a gift for your child's teachers/staff members. A thoughtful note from you and/or your child at any time of the year is appreciated just as much or more as any gift.
Staff Shout Out!
Dear Parents,
We invite you to share a few kind words or a heartfelt message for your child's teacher or Blacklick staff member. Our staff works tirelessly to provide the best education and support for our children, and your appreciation can make a significant impact on their day.
Please take a moment to express your gratitude, share a positive experience, or simply say thank you.
Your messages will be shared with the staff member to brighten their day and acknowledge their hard work and dedication.
Thank you for your participation and support!
