We did it! We made it to spring break and I hope that you all enjoy this time. If you are traveling somewhere, have a wonderful time and please be sure to bring back the warm weather with you.
When we return from spring vacation we will welcome a new student to the Darby class. Her name is Sofia and she is moving here from Ukraine. We are excited to welcome her to our class.
Please be sure to read through the information below: curriculum updates, notes about the 5th Grade Music Concert and a reminder about our Westgate Water for Sudan fundraiser.
Have a wonderful break,

Curriulum Updates
Reading: This week, we finished our reading of Freedom Walkers, the story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. I am so proud of the effort the students put into their work during their reading of this novel from their written responses to our classroom discussions. When we return from break, we will be using the information taken from our reading to create a timeline.
Writing: This week students enjoyed some fun free writing activities and closed out the week by learning about Ramadan and creating Acrostic poems to show what they learned.Math:
MATH:
Gillespie: This week students completed their chapter #6 math assessment. Students were given the opportunity to correct their work by reworking the problem when given the correct answer. Students also had the opportunity to partake in some exploration activities centering around coordinate planes covered in chapter #7, the chapter we will begin when returning from break.
Kuehl: This week we wrapped up our unit about volume with an assessment and a STEAM project. Parents should have seen the test come home, so be sure to ask your child about it if you didn't see it. As part of our STEAM project, the children created op art cubes. On each side of a paper cube, the students drew optical illusions. After completing their cubes, the children found the volume of them and the area of each face. After spring break, we will begin Chapter 7, which is about line plots and the coordinate plane. This is a short unit that focuses on making and interpreting line plots, graphing on a coordinate plane, number patterns, and graphs.
Burriesci: This week we started on chapter 6, volume. We used a ruler to measure rectangular solids in the classroom and found the volume of solids. We are getting used to understanding that volume is three dimensional, and that is the reason we write the answer with a tiny 3 (similar to the 2 for "squared") above it. When we return from break we will explore real world problems that involve volume.
Darby: We continued to work on solving equations with two variables and graphing them. When we return from spring break, we will be taking our quiz for 7.1-7.4.
Content: This week we continued our matter unit in science by analyzing the samples we investigated last week. We used the data as evidence to explain a phenomenon - Matter can be identified based on its properties. We will continue with this unit when we return from break.
