Holton Families,

Each year, I like to take time to review our Standard Response Protocol with our families so you can, if you choose, review the information at home with your child to reinforce our efforts at school. What we don't want is for students to be taken off guard or worried about how we handle various incidents at school.

First, let me explain some of the terminology we use. We have a Standard Response Protocol that we use district wide (please see below). There are five parts to the protocol that we use depending on the issue. We start with “Hold”. This simply means that students and staff stay in their rooms and don’t leave until we announce an “All Clear”. We would use this action if we were looking for someone or something, for example. When I was the principal at Neveln, we actually used this action because a dog entered the building during recess. We had to keep everyone in their rooms until we could safely remove the dog from the building.

However, the action that I get the most questions about is the “Lockdown” protocol. We would use this protocol if there was a threat in the building. All doors would be locked, lights would be out, and students would be out of sight. So, the question would be, “when do you use the different protocols?” The answer is: it depends. If we have a verifiable threat, we will Lockdown. Your child’s safety is our primary concern, and we will not hesitate to do what is necessary to protect our students. However, we often get rumors or third-hand information, and that is something we would investigate to verify the rumor. We aren’t willing to cause panic or disrupt the day because of poor information. When we do have a “Hold” or a “Lockdown” we will send out a portal push to our families to let them know why. If you hear information from your child and have concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Please review the protocol below with your child and make sure to ask us questions if they arise.

Sincerely,
Mr. Schara

Welcome to February, Holton Hawks!

Boy, Mother Nature has not been our friend lately. Here’s hoping that February is a little more forgiving. Speaking of weather, this is my monthly reminder to make sure that your child is dressing appropriately for the day. This includes inside and outside attire. As I sit here on this chilly afternoon, the temperature outside is 1° with a windchill of -12°. We had recess inside today because of the windchill. We were 3 windchill degrees away from being outside. Yet, I saw at least two students wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Being cool around friends is one thing, putting the student in danger is entirely different. Please speak to your child about making smart weather decisions. Remember, we go outside of the air temperature is above zero and the windchill is above -10.

As I have mentioned in previous updates, PBIS is very much a part of what we do at IJ Holton. Recently, we had our January Celebration. Some months we go all out, like when we had Snake Center come for a visit or when we travel to the Packer Dome. Other times our celebrations are more about providing opportunities for our students to be their best. We’ve done this in the past by writing notes to residents of Senior Living housing or as we did in January, we had a competition among classrooms to see which classes followed school expectations the best. The winning classes received a pizza party for their efforts. Congratulations to Ms. Uphus (Gr. 5) and Mrs. Terrazas’ (Gr. 6) classes for setting a great example and winning this month’s challenge.

In February, our celebration will be School-wide Bingo. Students will be participating in team and class Bingo games. We have many great prizes for the students to win. I look forward to a great day.

Speaking of Bingo, I hope you were able to attend one of our Family Fun Nights. Lots of fun was had by all. Thank you to Mrs. Meinecke, Mrs. Dunbar, and their team for their work arranging it.

If you don’t follow IJ Holton Intermediate School on any of the socials, may I take a second to recommend it. Our pages show the weekly winners of our Character Counts awards. You also get to see pictures and videos of various events, activities and celebrations that go on at Holton. Plus, school event notices are posted and kept up to date. Anything you need to know is usually posted on one or all of our sites.

At IJ Holton, we encourage our students to be Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and to Do Their Best! If at any time you have any questions or concerns, please email me david.brown@austin.k12.mn.us or call me at 460-1525. Stay warm!

School Closing/Delays

PARENTS, BE PREPARED FOR BAD WEATHER!

If conditions look unfavorable, check your local news or listen to the radio. If you don’t have local news channels on your television, you can visit the following stations online: KAAL, KTTC, and KIMT or check the school website. https://www.austin.k12.mn.us/

The best way to receive official communications from Austin Public Schools is by signing up for the Parent Portal. If you haven’t done so yet, we strongly encourage you to register. This is the primary method our schools use to communicate and send notifications about closures, delays, or early dismissals and all other communications, grades, etc.

Important: Please refrain from calling the school, especially in the event of a possibility of an early dismissal. Notifications regarding school closings will be sent to you at the same time they are received by our office staff.

In the event of a closure/delay we will put a notice on our doors.

⛄⛅⚡With Cold weather here keep in mind that our doors do not open until 7:45. Staff are not expected to be here until 5 minutes prior to students' arrival. Do not drop off your child or send them early unless they are dressed for appropriate weather conditions. and are prepared to wait outside.

Planning Ahead for Student Appointments

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We kindly ask that you plan ahead when scheduling appointments for your child during the school day. To help us ensure a smooth and timely dismissal, please notify the office in advance and arrive with enough time to allow for your child to be called from class.

Your cooperation helps minimize disruptions to learning and ensures your child is ready when you arrive. Thank you for your continued support!

📞 Keep Emergency Contacts Up to Date!

To help us ensure your child’s safety, please take a moment to review and update your emergency contact information. If your phone number, address, or emergency contacts have changed recently, let us know as soon as possible. Accurate contact details help us reach you quickly in case of illness, injury, or other urgent situations.

You can update your information by logging into the parent portal.

Thank you for helping us keep our records current!

***LOST AND FOUND

Please remind your child to check the lost and found area. All items will be disposed of during spring break. We get overcrowded and we lack space. We remind kids frequently to check the lost and found and instead of it downsizing it gets bigger, we don't have the space, so items get disposed of during our holiday or extended breaks.

Warm regards,

IJH Office Staff

Student Fees Student Fees

Student fee statements were sent home at the end of January and will be sent home again at the end of the school year. Please ensure that all outstanding fees are paid in full by the end of the year. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Message From the Counselors Message From the Counselors

Dear IJ & Ellis Parents and Guardians,

There are a couple of talking points the counselors would like to suggest for parents and students:

Navigating the “Mid-Year Slump"

As the school year progresses, it’s common for students to experience a dip in motivation and energy, especially during this long stretch of winter.

  • Helping your child overcome a mid-semester slump means supporting both their learning and well-being. By recognizing the signs, resetting goals, refreshing study routines, and encouraging self-care, you can help them stay motivated and succeed in the second semester. Getting outside and soaking in fresh air can be powerful tools to combat the mid-year slump as well.
  • We encourage parents to sit down with their child to set new, achievable goals for the semester, such as participating more in class, finishing assignments on time, improving grades in a challenging subject, or retaking tests if their scores fall under the goal they set for themselves.
  • Regular communication between parents and teachers can also help identify issues early and provide students with a network of support which can include the school counselor or social worker helping to provide additional resources and strategies to further their success academically and emotionally.

With the right support and interventions, students can regain their motivation, improve their performance, and successfully navigate the remainder of the school year.

National School Counselors Week (2/3-2/7)

During National School Counselor Week, we recognize and celebrate the important role our school counselors play in supporting our students. This includes:

  • Providing guidance in academics, supporting students’ social and emotional growth, and helping them navigate the challenges of adolescence.
  • By partnering with families and teachers, school counselors create a supportive environment where every student can learn, grow, and succeed.

Through advocacy, encouragement, and collaboration with families and staff, our counselors help ensure every student feels supported and prepared for success.

Final Thought:

As we continue to move forward in the school year, we want to take a moment to highlight something that makes a big difference in every child’s success: regular school attendance.

Congratulations!

Between IJ and Ellis, we had 193 students with perfect attendance in the 2nd Quarter. These students’ tireless commitment to attendance does not go unnoticed. We see you!

IJ Holton Families,

One of the BARR strategies is to engage families in student learning. IJ Holton staff work to reach out to families to share what is happening in the classroom. When we meet in teams, we recognize that working together with families is the best way to ensure a successful learning environment for our students. Karen Dunbar, IJ Holton & Ellis BARR Coordinator

Review of U-Time Sessions in January
1/8/26
Grade 5 I Am Students identified positive relationships, self-worth, and self-acceptance. The book, I Am Enough by Grace Byers, was read. Students also drew a picture illustrating the quality of themselves that they wanted to celebrate.

Grade 6 Effective Communication Students learned specific communication methods to achieve a task and to practice methods that promote effective communication. They learned this through a class activity that required effective communication and a partner activity where pairs developed I-messages.

1/15/26
Grade 5 The Power of Yet Students learned to recognize the importance of maintaining hope during times of struggle. The book, The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi, was read as part of this lesson.
Grade 6 Learning to Listen Students learned to recognize the qualities of a good listener. They also learned to recognize how individuals can hear the same information yet process it differently and arrive at different conclusions. They did this through an activity involving following very specific instructions that would not be repeated.

1/22/26
Grade 5 Being a Good Sport Students learned how to recognize the skills and behavior of being a good sport in both the instances that we win and the instances that we lose. As part of this lesson, the students listened to a reading of Sally Sore Loser by Frank J. Sileo.
Grade 6 What’s on Your Plate Students identified different activities in their lives and discussed the balance of responsibilities and free-time activities. They split a paper plate in half with a section for each of these categories.

1/29/26

Grade 5 STEP STEP is an acronym that students learned that stands for Stop, Think, Examine, and Proceed. Through this lesson, students learned how to self-regulate when their emotions feel out of control.Grade 6 Do You Know You? This lesson focused on helping students identify strengths in their classmates. They also had the chance to realize and reflect on how others see them. This was done by focusing on the compliment and how beneficial this can be when offered truthfully and sincerely.

Consistent Attendance Matters!

At Austin Public Schools, we know that showing up matters. Consistent attendance is one of the clearest predictors of a student’s success, not only in the classroom, but in life after graduation. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve academically, graduate on time, and find success in college, careers, or both.

Strong attendance also tells us something important: it reflects how connected students and families/caregivers feel to their school community. When attendance drops, whether for specific groups or across the district, it often signals challenges we can help address, including school climate and engagement, as well as social, emotional, or family barriers.

That’s why we’re focused on building schools where students want to be. Through strong instruction, supportive relationships, and programs that care for the whole child, Austin Public Schools is working to ensure every student feels welcome, supported, and ready to learn each day. When students feel that connection, they show up, and when they show up, they succeed.

Please watch our new video about the importance of attendance.

Strategic Priorities Strategic Priorities

Strategic Priorities Updates:

Safe and Welcoming Learning Environment:

  • Our BARR work continues to grow. We are getting great feedback from our BARR coach with areas to grow in. For the first year of implementation, I am very pleased

  • We continue to navigate the effects of social issues on school as they affect our students and families. We handle concerns on an individual basis and try our best to work with families to meet their needs. However, we are seeing attendance issues.

  • We continue to improve the building with safety updates like the intercom, widow coverings, and door maintenance.

  • Due to weather-related school cancelations, we missed one of our school dances. We are trying to re-schedule.

Packer Profile:

  • We have been researching and choosing a new Project Lead the Way class to replace Green Architecture. We will be sharing our choice at the CACR meeting next week.

  • We are working directly with Emily Hoveland, Packer Profile Coordinator, from AHS to evaluate student work to go into the Packer Portfolio.

MTSS:

  • Our weekly PLC's have been focusing on incorporating reading interventions in both 6th and 5th grades.

  • Corey Haugen shared our math and reading data with us last week. We are seeing good signs of growth and as our PLC's develop and are able to adapt to their data we should see further gains.

  • The positive BARR impact on our MTSS process has brought sincere teacher voice into the process. We are able, with good data, to have meaningful conversations about individual and groups of students.

  • We are working with social studies and science to ensure we are covering standards adequately with a reduction in time for each.

Resource Management:

  • Our monthly meetings with the finance, food service and buildings and grounds departments have helped us better address concerns in a timelier manner.

  • We are on track with our budget adjustments for the move from departments to an elementary schedule. We no longer have department budgets but rather subject specific budgets.
