How to Help at Home:

Have students look for different 3D shapes around your home. Discuss the different attributes of these shapes: (a can of soup is a cylinder, it has no straight edges, no vertices, but 2 round faces)

Have students practice partitioning items into halves and fourths!

Students should be reading at home every night.

Have students practice rereading books that they are familiar with to practice fluency, reading rate, and reading with expression.

Please have student practicing their handwriting at home. This can be as simple as having them rewrite the alphabet and numbers, practice spelling high frequency words or their family members names!

A List of High frequency words/ heart words were given at conferences along with comprehension practice! These are easy things to work on at home!

Go over high frequency words with your students like:

the, I, a, said, to, do, of, see, he, be, me, from, look, book, are, was, you, what, have, your, want, no, go, so, goes, says, she, we, talk, walk, were, could, would, should, or, for.

MyPath

All students have access to MyPath through their Schoology/ Clever. Students can access targeted reading and math activities based on their needs on their phone, ipad, or computer. Students should utilize this over Thanksgiving break!

MyPath is the application that is connected to the students MAP test scores. So students are given a pathway based on the areas that they need to continue working on. The steps are below.

1. From the Marietta City Schools Webpage, Go to schoology. Log in should be your students lunch number and their password is their birthday in the format (MMDDYYYY)

2. Go to the waffle icon in the top right corner and hit Clever
3. Hit the rainbow "G" to login with google.
4. In the search bar type "MyPath". (There should be a reading and math option)

  • or look for the icons already made to favorites on the main Clever Screen.
5. Once you click on which subject you would like, they should be able to practice skills in different areas that align with their MAP scores.

Happy Holidays families!

We know that this is a busy time of year for you and your family. Please keep reading everyday as it will help your student continue to grow and learn.

Also check out the link below for some ideas on how to incorporate writing practice at home as well. Writing is one of the more difficult skills to master as a multilingual learner, so any extra practice will benefit your child.

10 Reading Ideas for Families

By

Lydia Breiseth

Winter is a great time to share fun activities together, including reading and writing. Try some of the ideas below — and look for ways to do them in your home language!

Being together

· Tell stories: Use some of your holiday time together to tell stories from your childhood. Ask relatives and friends to share their own stories too. Storytelling helps children become better readers. Family stories are also an important part of your child's heritage.

· Read together: Look for some time to read together and talk about the books you read. If you have extra time, read a longer chapter book or children's novel out loud to your child. You will enjoy being together and discovering a good story.

At the library

· Visit the library: Check your library's holiday hours and, if you have time, take your children to the library. Encourage your child to browse the children's section — it's the perfect opportunity to see what's on the shelves.

· Learn about new traditions/holidays: Look for children's books or online information about holidays you celebrate, special traditions, or other winter celebrations. Your child may have friends at school who celebrate different holidays. You can learn more about global traditions of holidays such as Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, Three Kings Day, and the Winter Solstice.

The gift of reading

· Give books: Give your child a book for the holidays. It doesn't have be new — you can share one of your favorite books or look for a special old book from a used bookstore! If relatives are looking for gift ideas for your child, ask them to give a book this year.

· Look for other reading and writing gifts: Give your child some comic books, magazines, or special note cards for writing letters. This is a great time to find something connected to your child's interests, like sports, nature, or art.

Writing ideas

· Write letters and thank-you notes: Help your child write letters or e-mails to relatives and friends. Show your child how to write thank-you notes for holiday gifts.

· Make lists: Ask your child to help write shopping lists, activity ideas, or television and movie schedules. This is good writing practice — and a big help to the adults too!

Even if your time is limited, a few extra minutes or hours reading together can make an important difference to your child. Who knows? You may even create a new reading routine for the New Year!

Balancing Equations: Students must learn to understand what the equal sign means. It DOES NOT mean the answer. The equal sign acts as a balance scale. It means, “the same as”. Students need to understand there should be the same amount on both sides of the equal sign. When both sides are the same, that is called “true”. When one side is more or less than the other, that is called “false”. Help your child practice balancing equations by using the videos and activity below.
