Happy Chinese New Year Happy Chinese New Year

Dear YCIS Community,

We hope you all had a wonderful time at last week’s Chinese New Year celebration! It was truly heartwarming to see our YCIS families come together to celebrate this special occasion. A huge thank you to the Chinese New Year committee, our dedicated staff, our supportive parent group and our amazing alumni—every detail reflected your incredible efforts, and we deeply appreciate all that you contributed to making this event so meaningful.

Here is the link to view the performances again and photos we have collected from the CNY event as well. Feel free to add any photos you might have taken well. If you download any of the photos or performances, please respect the privacy of our students and staff by NOT posting them on social media.

To help us improve future events, we’d love to hear your feedback. This short survey should take no more than 2-3 minutes to complete. Your responses are anonymous, and your insights will help us enhance the event experience for our community.

Congrats to our top three classes from each campus! All of the students and parents 🤪 did an amazing job! We appreciate your hard work and dedication. Here are the results:

As we look ahead, we encourage families who have not yet re-enrolled for the 2025-2026 school year to consider continuing their journey with our YCIS community. Our unique bilingual, bicultural environment offers an experience unlike any other. If you know families who share our values, please help us spread the word about YCIS. Your recommendations and word-of-mouth support are invaluable in welcoming more families into our wonderful community.

Nicky Weir visits YCIS-SV

Nicky Weir, Director of ECE (Pedagogy) at YCYW, spent a week at the YCIS-SV campus, working closely with our staff to support the development and growth of the YC Approach in early childhood education. Through discussions, observations, and hands-on collaboration, Nicky provided valuable insights into strengthening our teaching practices, refining pedagogical approaches, and deepening our integration of the 12 Values into daily learning experiences. Her visit reinforced our commitment to fostering a nurturing, inquiry-driven environment that aligns with the YCIS philosophy, ensuring that our youngest learners benefit from a holistic and meaningful education.

Stanford’s AI Tinkery Visits YCIS

Stanford University’s AI Tinkery is “a community hub for members from across the university to connect, play, and tinker with the possibilities of generative AI in education.” Our YCIS K-8 staff were fortunate to welcome Jessica (AI Tinkery’s Manager) and Ang Ash (AI Tinkery Mentor) to Wednesday’s staff meeting. They introduced the mission of the AI Tinkery to our staff and facilitated a tinker session for everyone to explore how to build a custom chatbot. It was an insightful experience. One where our teachers had the opportunity to step back into the role of a learner—sparking curiosity and creativity. We look forward to continuing our conversation and reconnecting with the AI Tinkery in the future!

Early Childhood Education (ECE) Early Childhood Education (ECE)

Valentine's card-making at the ECE campus was a flurry of activity and fun. The children concentrated on choosing their favorite materials to create their masterpieces. Parents assisted and provided encouragement as their children cut hearts, wrote messages, and glued on decorations. The room was filled with the happy chatter of families creating personalized cards for their loved ones. A great time was had by all!

The TK classes (Comet & Galaxy) discussed Valentine's Day during this week's assembly. When asked what Valentine’s Day is, the children shared ideas like sharing, showing friendship, playing together, card-making, and gift-giving. After listening to "Pete the Cat Valentine's Day is Cool," by Kimberly and James Dean, the classes, divided into their House groups, created Valentine's pictures for all of the classes on the ECE campus. They then surprised each class with a loud, "Happy Valentine's Day!" when they delivered their creations. We are full of love here on the ECE Campus for all of our friends! What can you do to show others you care for them?

Elementary (Kindergarten - 4th Grade) Elementary (Kindergarten - 4th Grade)

Chinese New Year (CNY) is one of the most vibrant and cherished celebrations, filled with rich traditions, family gatherings, and joyful festivities. In Chinese cultural studies, students embark on a fascinating journey, beginning with Laba Zhou, a special porridge eaten on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, symbolizing good fortune and gratitude. As they explore customs like decorating with red lanterns, giving out lucky red envelopes, and enjoying symbolic feasts, they fully immerse themselves in the culture. The celebration concludes with the Lantern Festival, where glowing lanterns light up the sky, and the 湯圓 marking the end of the festivities with warmth and hope. Through these experiences, students deeply connect with and fall in love with the spirit of Chinese New Year!

The first-grade PBL unit begins with a thought-provoking question that encourages students to think critically: How do where we live and the time we live in shape our understanding of who we are?

As part of this exploration, teachers weave Chinese cultural studies into the curriculum. In their character learning journey, first graders select Chinese characters to study, guided by teachers who help them uncover the historical evolution of simplified and traditional scripts. This process deepens their appreciation for the richness of the language and its transformation over time.

Students also delve into the significance of traditional Chinese clothing, exploring various dynasties and how attire reflects distinct cultural identities. Through analysis of clothing features, they identify which elements correspond to specific historical periods. To further personalize their learning, students have the opportunity to wear traditional outfits, allowing them to connect firsthand with the cultural heritage.

As a hands-on activity, they create traditional Chinese clothing accessories, reinforcing their understanding through creativity. The unit culminates in a joyful celebration of Chinese New Year, where students proudly wear their favorite traditional outfits, bringing their learning to life in a meaningful and festive way.

In the 2nd-grade classroom, students explored the legendary story of Nian (年) and brought it to life through creative storytelling. As part of their learning, they wrote and performed a skit for the 3rd grade, showcasing their understanding of the tale and its significance in Chinese culture. Teachers were invited to join the celebration and witness their wonderful performance. Watch the show here: Nian

Recently, the middle school students had the opportunity to interact with two guest speakers: an acupuncturist, who visited their Chinese class, and a radiological technician, who spoke to them in their science class. These experiences are invaluable, offering our students a chance to bridge the gap between classroom lessons and real-world applications. By connecting what they learn in subjects like language and science to professional practices, students gain a deeper understanding of how their education extends beyond the classroom, inspiring curiosity and reinforcing the relevance of their studies in everyday life.
