Katie Dinsmore
Today, teaching is Katie Dinsmore's business ... she's found her niche.
Position: Special education teacher
Experience: First year teacher
Education: Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Bemidji State University
What are your hopes as you join Red Wing Public Schools?
I hope to build my career as a teacher and continue to learn every day.
What do you want your students to know from Day 1?
My classroom is a safe space for students to learn. It’s a place for students to decompress when they are feeling overwhelmed and need to take a break. We will recognize that mistakes are another opportunity to learn and we value them because of that.
When did you realize that you wanted to teach?
When I first started at Bemidji State University I was a business major. I was also working full time as a Minnesota Reading Corps tutor at Bluff View Elementary in Lake City. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I loved teaching and soon after changed my major.
What’s your first day of school memory?
The classic first day photo with my brother in front of our house.

What are your hopes as you join Red Wing Public Schools?
I hope to create a safe and welcoming classroom environment for each and every student to learn and grow this year. I am very excited to get to know the students as well as staff and to become a part of the Red Wing community!
What do you want your students to know from Day 1?
I want my students to know that their voices matter and I want each of them to feel safe, seen, and heard when they enter my classroom every day. I hope to foster a very positive classroom community in which students are able to learn in both a fun and safe environment.
When did you realize that you wanted to teach?
I knew I wanted to be a teacher since I was in high school. I grew up in a small town and went to a K-12 school which always had a very tight-knit community feel. It was through my own high school teachers' passion for teaching and love for learning that encouraged me to want to go into education when I went to college. They were always so encouraging and supportive and truly cared about their students’ success. They definitely inspired me to want to be that kind of teacher for my own students one day.
What’s your first day of school memory?
My favorite first day of school memory was when I was going into first grade. I remember the open house and meeting my teacher and classmates. I was so excited to see my classroom and make new friends, and my first grade teacher handed out candy which was also a bonus!
