Message from the Principal
Happy Monday Kellogg Community. I have packed this message with a lot of information.
We made it to the last week of school. It is difficult to believe but our last day of school is Friday, June 5th. The last week is always a mix of teachers teaching until the very end and a celebration of student successes. We are excited for all of the end of year activities this week. Below is a timeline of what to expect this week.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 2nd is a late start day because of our final staff meeting. Our doors open at about 9:15 am and our first class starts at 9:30 am. We have one final day for our book fair tomorrow and so if your student is interested in some light reading for the summer months, send them with some money and have them stop by the library in the morning.
In the evening of June 2nd we will host our annual season ending DLI Community Night in our Cafeteria from 5:30-6:30 pm. If you want information about our DLI programming, please come visit with Ms. Mac, Dr. Carpenter and our DLI teachers.
Wednesday, June 3rd students will be on a normal bell schedule. The 8th graders will have promotion practice from 3:00-3:50 pm. Students will be getting their yearbook today during school as well, but encourage your student to bring it back to school if it comes home, they will need it for yearbook signing on Friday.
New this year is always a resource we have invested in that we are calling Literacy Backpacks. All 6th and 7th grade parents, when your student comes home Wednesday evening ask to see their Literacy Backpack. Each backpack will be filled with Mad Libs, a Summer Bridge Book, a Puzzle Book, an Interesting Science Facts book, a Math Riddles book, a Poetry book, a TI30XS Calculator, Colored Pencils, Clicker Pencils, and Motivational Pens. We are hopeful that families can use these resources to work with their student over the summer on some skill building things to promote literacy in reading, writing, science and math.
Wednesday evening we will conclude our day with our annual STEAM Invention Fair, a year in review. Ms. RD has lots of inventions and student STEAM work to share with families. Please stop by from 6:00-7:00 pm to honor the hard work of your student in STEAM classes.
On June 4th 8th graders will leave for Oaks Park at 9:30 am and return to Kellogg at 2:30 pm, then finish their day in their advisory class. Please remember for 8th grade:
- students who earn a level 2 or 3 referral between May 11 and June 2nd, and or
- students who earn more than 2 tardies per day (average) between May 11 and June 2nd,
- will be ineligible to attend the Oaks Park field trip.
June 4th is also a fun 6th and 7th grade students field day schedule. Students will be on an alternative schedule and have field day the last two hours of the day to celebrate friends and the climate of our community.
Then, the evening of June 4th we will have our annual 8th grade promotion in the Kellogg gymnasium from 5:30-7:00 pm. We will begin the program at 5:30 pm and then conclude with light refreshments and some photo opportunities in our cafe after until about 7:00 pm. Each family will receive about four tickets. Each family member must have a ticket to be admitted to promotion. We have limited seating and so please do not expect to be admitted without your ticket.
June 5th will be our final day of the school year. We will be on an alternative schedule, have locker clean out in the afternoon, followed by our annual 8th grade Clap Out and year book signing sessions for students. Our school day will conclude as normal at 4:00 pm. On the last day we always get students who want to mill around campus, but teachers are only scheduled to be on campus until 4:15 pm. Please encourage your student to leave campus right after school so we can clear the building to honor teachers and staff on the last day as well.

8th Grade Oaks Park Field Trip / Excursión de 8.º grado a Oaks Park
Kellogg Staff & PTSA are excited to announce the 8th grade end of the year Oaks Park Trip!
When / Cuando
Thursday June 4, 8th graders will take school buses from Kellogg to Oaks Park where they will enjoy a day of fun with their friends. Students will leave Kellogg around 9:30 AM and return around 3:00 PM.
Cost / Costo: $25
We have secured the spot at Oaks Park, but we still need to raise funds to pay for the buses and ride bracelets for the students. That comes out to $25 per student. Scan the QR code to the right or go to https://www.schoolpay.com/link/kelloggoakspark.
Don’t have $25? Pay what you can, and/or email alcruz@pps.net! Have more than $25? Pay extra to help offset others! Feel free to share this link with family and friends interested in helping to create a memorable experience for your 8th grader.
¿No tienes $25?
Please note that this field trip is a privilege and is intended to recognize students who have consistently demonstrated positive behavior and engagement. While we hope to include as many students as possible, not all students may qualify.
As part of our expectations leading up to the trip, any student who receives a Stage 2 or 3 referral starting on Monday, May 11th will not be eligible to attend. Additionally, chronic tardies will result in a student not attending the field trip. This means that between May 11th and June 2nd, students who average 2 or more tardies per day will not be able to attend the field trip. Our mission at Kellogg is for our 8th graders to leave for high school prepared for success. Tardies cause students to miss key instruction and are disruptive to the learning environment of others.
We appreciate your support in helping us encourage positive choices and accountability as we approach the end of the school year!
The ROAR Store
The final day of the ROAR Store is this Wednesday during lunch periods. Students can purchase Scholastic Bucks with ROAR Tickets!! Several students have asked if we can open the store tomorrow, but we are limited on staffing it. Since the store is managed and run by Student Council, we will not open until Wednesday, but for students who want to spend their ROAR tickets on Scholastic Bucks, it is a 15 ticket/$15 in scholastic bucks (essentially a student can get $15 worth of stuff at the Scholastic Book Store with 15 tickets, pretty good deal!).

Message from PTSA
Thank you for all of your support this year! This has been the best year yet at Kellogg, and we couldn’t have done it without you! Your support for our students, teachers, and staff has made a huge impact on Kellogg, from your help with food and Resilience Fund donations, to volunteering your time at the school, to bringing food for Staff Appreciation, and so much more. Next year’s PTSA board is ready to continue all of this for 2026-27, and will reach out in the fall with plans for the new school year.
Thanks from Renee, Allison, Dani, PJ, Kendyl, Cindy, and Amelia!
Volunteer Needs for 8th grade promotion
Thursday June 4th is 8th Grade Promotion Night! If you have a child being honored, congratulations! For other families, it's a great night to come celebrate the 8th graders and see what promotion looks like (and think about what you want it to look like for your cohort too). Come help us with this event. We need ticket takers from 5pm until about 6pm and then people to help with setting up and giving out refreshments and doing clean up from about 6-7:45. If you can do that entire time, 5-7:45, GREAT! If not, just sign up for what you are able to do. Hope to see you Thursday! Sign up HERE. We also need 1-2 volunteers to run the photo booth - if you would like to do that, email Abeni.

SUN Youth Advocate
Hello!
My name is Nia Johnson (she/they), and I'm the new SUN Youth Advocate (SYA) through Impact NW! I service SW and SE schools in Portland.
Links about the program
- SYAP Flyer - English / Spanish
- SYAP Newsletter (multiple languages available in the top dropdown)
- Want to know more about the program through video? Click me!
What can I help with?
I work with Impact NW and the SUN program to provide students with a space to speak freely, openly, and sometimes messy on lived experiences and beliefs. I support students in their academic success as well as in their social-emotional growth. This can include, but is not limited to: finding summer jobs, conflict navigation (with peers or with adults), identity formation, planning for the future, or understanding emotional responses to the world. I also provide students' families with assistance in the form of utility assistance and food security.
Who am I?
I was born and raised in Ohio, self-actualized in Chicago, where I went to school for my Bachelor's in Fine Arts, and lived there for about 8 years. I wanted art to stay a way of life for me rather than something I would have to make into a commodity to survive. To keep art a safe space, I explored teaching art at an after-school program in Little Village (La Villita) in Chicago. I fell in love with teaching and was able to continue exploring it through a school in Portland, where I taught Yearbook and Race History of Oregon that blended multicultural education with place-based learning and art for self-exploration. I was also the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Program Manager, where I planned/facilitated Heritage Months and Affinity Groups for 6-12th grade. I love reading manga, comics, baking, and cats. I do yoga, meditate, go bird watching, and do outdoor activities like hiking and pickleball. I'm introverted, sheepish, but very competitive and radical. ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ
REAP
REAP is a leadership building education extension organization that works as a community partner in the Kellogg space. REAP has three amazing colleagues working with students throughout the day: Ms. Altynai, Ms. Abeni, and Ms. Geliah.

School Traffic Circulation Map (Reminder)
The safety of our students and staff are our first priority! If a school official is directing traffic, please pay close attention to their instructions. Parents should not enter into the school parking lot from 9:00-9:20 am and from 3:45-4:10. Thank you for your attention to safety on our campus.
The Kellogg School traffic circulation maps outline the planned flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic around our campus during drop-off, pick-up, and other times when school-related traffic is high. The map is designed to help parents, students, school staff, and drivers understand the most efficient and safe routes for entering, exiting, and navigating within the school premises.
Our circulation maps also include nearby Park and Walk locations. These are sites near the school where families can park or students can be dropped off and walk the remainder of the distance to the school site, reducing car traffic in front of the school and allowing you to skip waiting in the drop-off line while students start the day with healthy physical activity, arriving at school more ready to learn. Some Park and Walk locations are at nearby parks, while others encourage families to use on-street parking within the school neighborhood.
Please utilize Park and Walk locations and avoid dropping off and picking up students at the front of the school along 69th Avenue or in the parking lot.

Grades and ParentVue
If you are uncertain about how to check on your student's grades, missing work and or class work progress, here is a quick how to resource that might be able to help.
Safe Oregon
We are grateful that the PPS school community is using the SafeOregon tip line to report incidents that affect students' well-being and ability to learn in a safe environment. Just last year, there were over 300 tips that were submitted anonymously. We are responsible for keeping SafeOregon's contact information for our buildings accurate at all times so that school leaders can be alerted promptly. Please remember to reach out to Andrew Gerlach (agerlach@pps.net) whenever there is a staffing change to building leadership. Please save the SafeOregon number in your phone: 844-472-3367 This will allow you to identify their number when they need to call you if an urgent tip has been submitted in connection to your school.

Schoolwide Expectations
At Kellogg we are proud of our schoolwide expectations as they provide our students with safe, structured, and productive learning environments. Please take the time to review some of our expectations below.
Cell Phones and Technology Devices
Cell phones and all personal technologies (e.g. apple watches, gaming devices, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, etc.) are expected to be off and away during the school day. Students are expected to keep cell phones and technology devices turned off and put away in their lockers. Personal technologies and cell phones should not be on student's person in the hallways, restrooms, and at lunch recess. If a student is spotted with a cell phone or technology device, it will be immediately confiscated and taken to the front office. Students with repeated cell phone or technology violations to this expectation will be placed on individualized cell phone and technology plan.
Bags and Backpacks
In alignment with many other middle schools in the District, all bags and backpacks must be stored in lockers during the school day. Backpacks clutter classroom spaces and items are frequently lost or stolen unless they are stored safely in a locker. Students will use their binders to carry their learning materials throughout the school day.
Learning Logs
To help students stay organized and keep track of important dates and deadlines, students will be issued a Learning Log. Be sure to check your student's Learning Log regularly to stay up-to-date with your student's assignments, tests, and other announcements. Learnings Logs will also serve as the student's hall pass when students leave the classroom during non-transition times. It is critical that students do not lose their Learning Log.
Toys and Valuable Items
Students should leave all toys, valuable items, and any item that can cause safety concerns or distractions at home. Leaving these items at home will ensure items are not lost or stolen.
Closed Campus
Kellogg is a closed campus. All visitors must check-in at the front office. Students must be signed out and picked up by a parent or guardian with ID before 3:45 in order to leave campus before dismissal time. Additionally, our school will not accept DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other deliveries to students. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off lunch items for their students at any time.
Key Contacts
Below are the counselors and administrators supporting each grade level.
Student safety, student well-being, and student learning is our top priority. If you ever need to speak to a teacher, counselor, administrator, or any staff member, please call the front office or e-mail the individual directly to schedule a meeting. Unannounced meetings are often difficult to accommodate as school staff have busy and tight schedules. In particular, before school, after school, and lunch times are the busiest times in schools as most staff members are on duty to ensure student safety. Thank you for your support and understanding!
