Waitsfield Elementary
August 22, 2025
Classrooms are ready and waiting for the arrival of students on the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL next Wednesday, August 27th.
Principal's Message
Dear friends and families,
School staff returned to work this week, formally beginning preparations for the year ahead, although there is lots of professional planning and learning that teachers do during the summer. These days before students return provide time to plan collaboratively. We've been focusing particularly on our school-wide goals of increasing student skills in writing, working independently (ability to do a task without needing coaching), and reading and math fluency. Additionally, we have focused a great deal on how we will continue to maintain and build upon the strong sense of community and belonging in our school. There's also lots of preparation to be done as we get ready for students to return for the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL on Wednesday, August 27th. The PTA invites families dropping off students for the first day to enjoy coffee and a snack, which they will be hosting outside, after you've taken the pre-requisite picture beneath the balloon rainbow that will be welcoming students.
We look forward to seeing students and families at the Back to School Community Gathering on Monday between 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to ease back into school a bit before the first day, connecting with teachers, as well as other students and families. Ice cream is included!
Respectfully, Kaiya
Waitsfield School FAQs
When do the school doors open? Students may enter the building as early as 7:25 a.m. Students are considered tardy at 7:40 a.m.
Is breakfast/snack available for students? Breakfast/snack is available for pick up in the cafeteria from 7:25 - 7:45 a.m. Students can pick it up on their way to class, where there will be an opportunity to eat it then or later in the morning. All student meals continue to be free in HUUSD. The daily menu for lunch and breakfast/snack can be found here.
How do you know where to send my child after school? We count on families to provide this information through Pick Up Patrol (PUP). You should have received a link to create a PUP account or update your information from last year. Thank you for taking care of this BEFORE the first day of school! If you need assistance, please contact Susan Laskaris at 496-3643.
Can my child use the school bus? Updated '25- '26 bus routes can be found here. Buses 9, 10 and 11 serve our school. Feel free to contact the bus barn at 244-6422 with any questions about routes, or reach out to the school at 496-3643. Stops can generally be added if they fall along established routes.
How do I report if my child will be absent? We are using Pick Up Patrol for families to report absences, late arrivals, early departures AND all afterschool plans. If we don't hear from you by 7:45, we will typically reach out. THANK YOU for eliminating this step by contacting us by 7:30 if your child will not be in school; this reduces worry on everyone's part.
Do I really need to re-register my student every year? Yes, we need updated health and contact information. If you have not already please register your child/ren. Thus far, about 60% of you have completed this task. The link and directions for how to complete registration updates are here.
The cafeteria menu for August/September can be found online here, you can also print it out from that site or request a copy from school. All student meals continue to be free in HUUSD.
SCHOOL DIRECTORY
Each year, we share a directory of students and their family’s contact information JUST with other families in the school. We only share this information with your permission. To give permission for your family’s info to be shared this school year, please complete this short form. We hope to have directories ready to share soon after the school year starts.

Mad River Valley Fall Soccer Registration
In the fall, the Mad River Valley Soccer Association provides a recreational youth soccer experience for players from the Mad River Valley. The first games are held the weekend after Labor Day, and the final games are held the first weekend in November. The primary purpose of the Recreational Team is to offer instruction-based soccer. Recreational teams participate in intra- and inter-league play on a regularly scheduled seasonal basis. Matches are instructional and promote equal playing time for all participants. Recreational teams focus on skills development in a non-competitive environment.

New STEM show at Mad Arts
Stardust
The Big MAC (Mad Arts Collective)
August 21- October 31, 2025
Open: Tuesday - Saturday, 1-5pm
Reception: September 19, 5-7pm
Mad Arts is excited to present "Stardust", a new exhibition on view from August 21 through October 31st at the Gallery and coinciding with the 2025 International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. Stardust is rooted in an age-old inquiry “Where are we going”?, a journey about the Self through the Cosmos and The Quantum World. Artists in the group ‘The Mad 802 Collective’ express their interpretation of the immaterial while engaging with the scales of the unimaginably tiny to the infinitely large in measurable and mythical time and grounded in the essence of nature itself. The Quantum World is one of uncertainty. One can’t really talk about where a quantum object is, we can only talk about where we might find it. Yet, our seemingly solid reality is built upon this tiny world of possibilities, stuff has form, the universe has form and we are solid. This show looks at the behavior of photons, particles and mysterious patterns of quantum phenomena. It inspires us to think about the magic of the quantum fundamental basis to reality and asks us to be curious about where the human species is going. Artists open up to their interpretation of the immaterial while engaging with the scales of the unimaginable tiny to the infinitely large.
