Dear OPR Families,

We have had an amazing competition over the last 5 weeks for ST Math March Mathness! Every class and every student has made progress. As a school, we moved from 69% puzzle progress to 99% so we have already reached our end of year goal. The students solved 311,757 puzzles and over 80 students earned their 100% Puzzle Progress Certificate. Eight classes reached 100% for their class average: Mrs. Moniz, Mrs.Sutherby, Mrs. Lynch, Mr. Rizzo, Mr. Larkin, Mrs. Bradley, and Mrs. O’Callaghan.

March Mathness also helped many classes get on track for our 80% for ALL school goal for this year! The following classes have more than 70% of their students at or exceeding the current goal of 66% puzzle progress in order to reach the 80% puzzle progress goal by the end of the year. Congratulations to these classes: Ms. Vetrino, Mrs. Hunter, Mrs. Moniz, Mrs. Sutherby, Mrs. Lynch, Mrs. Bradley, Mr. Larkin, Mrs. Sprague, Mr. Rizzo, Miss Udahl, and Mrs. O’Callaghan.

Our winners all averaged over 100 puzzles a week throughout the entire competition which is an amazing achievement.

  • 5th place went to Ms. Vetrino’s kindergarten class with an average of 140 puzzles per week and 91% of her class met the weekly goal throughout the competition.

  • 4th place went to Mrs. Sutherby’s first grade class with an average of 194 puzzles per week and 94% of her class met the weekly goal throughout the competition.

  • 3rd place was earned by Mr. Rizzo’s fourth grade class with an average of 226 puzzles per week and 85% of his class met the weekly goal throughout the competition.

  • 2nd place was awarded to Mrs. O’Callaghan’s fifth grade class with an average of 246 puzzles for the final week and 209 over the whole competition, plus 98% of her class met the weekly goal throughout the competition.

  • Our ST March Mathness Champions are Mrs. Lynch’s second grade class with an average of 377 puzzles in the final week and 292 for the entire competition, plus 98% of her class met the weekly goal throughout the competition.

Congratulations to all of our students for working together to persevere and reach such amazing heights!

Art with Ms. Kroll

Grade K:

Kindergarten artists are learning about Still Life art and how it features everyday objects that are man-made or natural. Each student is creating their own still life masterpiece using construction paper, crayons, and white tempera paint. The still lifes depict a vase of pussy willow plants on a table with a simple background.

Grade 1:

Students have been learning about the Element of Art: Texture and how there are two categories of texture which are real/actual and implied. First grade artists looked at the intricate weaving work of the Quechua Tribe, an indigenous group of South America, and learned how they use weaving to tell stories. Each artist created their own paper weaving masterpiece with implied texture using crayons, plastic texture sheets, and construction paper as well as white colored pencils for added detail.

Grade 2:

Students are working with the Element of Art: Form and learned about how sculpture is three-dimensional art. Second grade artists studied traditional and contemporary South African pottery as well as its cultural importance and many uses throughout history. Each artist made a colorful and textured pinch pot with clay and then finished it with acrylic paint and gloss medium.

Grade 3:

Third grade artists are studying the Element of Art: Shape and reviewed how there are two categories of shape which are geometric and organic. Third grade artists studied a brief history of architecture and looked at a variety of architectural styles. Each student sketched out a cityscape design featuring a specific theme and/or location. They are using these designs to create their cityscape collage masterpieces which are made with construction paper and oil pastels for added detail to the backgrounds.

Grade 4:

Fourth graders are studying the Element of Art: Form and reviewed how sculpture is three-dimensional art. Students looked at an array of ceramic donuts created by Korean contemporary artist, Jae Yong Kim, who is famous for his large-scale donut installations. Each artist made a paper mache donut with newspaper, masking tape, and glue as well as gesso to create a paint-friendly surface. Students are currently designing and decorating their donuts with acrylic paint.

Grade 5:

Students have been working with the Element of Art: Texture and reviewed how there are two categories of texture which are real/actual and implied. Fifth grade artists looked at paintings by contemporary French artist, Georges Dussau, and noticed how he used color and shape to create implied texture. Students are creating textured masterpieces that feature colorful abstract designs using cardboard, yarn, glue, aluminum foil, and Sharpie markers.

Reading with Mrs. Driscoll & Mrs. Segal

We wrapped up our last week of the March Madness Book Tournament. We have a winner! With a unanimous vote, we are excited to announce the winner of our 2024 March Madness Book Tournament. The winner is…. “Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear” by Lindsay Mattick. “Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear” is a heartwarming true story about a soldier named Harry and a bear named Winnie. The story is told through the eyes of his real life great-granddaughter. It explores their remarkable friendship. We learn how Winnie eventually became the inspiration for the beloved character Winnie-the-Pooh and that Christopher Robin did in fact have a role in Winnie’s life. If you haven’t read this story yet you should definitely check it out. Don’t forget that the Walpole Public Library is a great place to explore and find great books for free! https://www.walpolelibrary.org/
