Pride, Ownership, Working Together, Empathy, & Respect
Charging Up with POWER!
Charged Up Power!
Dear Charger Families and Stakeholders,
With just a month left in the school year and ACAP testing behind us, now is a great time to pause and reflect on all we've experienced and accomplished this year. A huge shout-out to our scholars who demonstrated pride and a strong commitment to academic excellence by taking their time and giving their best effort during ACAP testing. In honor of April being the Month of the Military Child, our Charger community proudly showed support for our military students this past Friday by wearing purple for Purple Up Day.
April is also dedicated to Autism Awareness, and we’d like to give a big shout-out to our National Junior Honor Society for leading an inspiring Spirit Week to raise awareness and celebrate neurodiversity.
Learning Focus
The learning focus for the upcoming week is embracing diverse perspectives. When we show empathy, we take the time to see the world through someone else’s eyes.
Recognizing Autism Awareness Month throughout April gave our Chargers the opportunity to deepen their understanding of autism and the importance of respecting and celebrating differences. This spirit of empathy and inclusion was also beautifully demonstrated during the Special Olympics this past week, where our participating scholars were uplifted and supported by their fellow Charger peers.
Check out this week's newsletter for the latest updates on activities, events, and highlights from the week!

Attendance Matters
POWER in Attendance
You Have the POWER
Absences Add Up!
Chronic absenteeism is a primary cause of low academic achievement.
Missing 10% of school for ANY reason, excused or unexcused, is proven to negatively impact future graduation rates.
Elementary & Middle Schools: 15% of the school report card is derived from the chronic absenteeism rate
High Schools: 10% of the school report card is derived from the chronic absenteeism rate
It's Never Too Late to Improve Attendance
Research shows that when students are chronically absent (18 or more days), they are less likely to read proficiently by 3rd grade.
What Families Can Do
Set a regular bedtime and morning routine
Prepare for school the night before
Develop back up plans for getting to and from school
Keep track of your student's attendance

Attendance - We Cannot Teach Students Unless They Come to School
Dear Chapman Middle School’s Families,
Attending school has a huge impact on student success. We realize some absences are for health or other reasons. However, a great number of absences can have a negative impact on your student’s success. Your child’s education is important, and it is our desire to have your child present each day school is in session. We realize circumstances arise that prevent attendance; however, the Code of Alabama requires schools to notify parents of their student’s absences.
Parent’s Responsibilities
- Encourage student attendance by taking a positive approach to school and school activities.
- Check frequently with school personnel as to student’s progress.
- Provide written excuse within two days after the student returns to school explaining his/her absence.
- Ask for help when an attendance problem arises with your child.
Student’s Responsibilities
- Regular attendance at school in each class is required.
- A normal participation in school work, such as, being prepared for class, completing assignments, participating in discussion and other involvement as deemed necessary by individual teachers is required.
If your family or your child needs support, please reach out to your child’s school for help.
We look forward to seeing you at school every day. Please let us know how we can best support you and your student so that they can attend school on time every day.
