I Am AVID Wall Art I Am AVID Wall Art

Here are the questions the students answered for their AVID wall art:

  1. What is AVID? -They defined it using the acronym.
  2. What is your identity?
  3. What are some things that bring you joy or help define who you are?

They had the option of writing those things down or drawing them on their mini-poster.

Anatomy of a Proper Email Anatomy of a Proper Email

It is imperative that our students know how to write a proper email. Email communication is necessary to be successful in higher education and as a professional. Our AVID mission is to prepare our students to be college AND career ready. Please take a look at the anatomy of a proper email document that our students are using to draft their emails.

Tutorial Request Form Tutorial Request Form

Our Nichols' mission is to develop our students into global problem solvers by engaging in rigorous critical inquiry, collaboration, and shifting our thinking into a growth mindset. One of the ways that our AVID students engage in critical inquiry is to reflect on their learning within their classes. This month, they have learned how to complete tutorial request forms by reflecting on their point of confusion (POC) in one of their classes. Students state their class essential question. Then, they state their outstanding questions about what they learned. Key academic vocabulary with definitions is listed along with their current knowledge about what they learned. In January, students will collaboratively work together in groups of 5-7 to review their POCs and collectively solve them during their Tuesday and Thursday tutorial process.

Please have your student to share with you one of their tutorial request forms that they have completed.

Learning Logs Learning Logs

One of the ways that we help foster a growth mindset in our students is to have them complete a weekly learning log. Students reflect on their weekly school tasks. They reflect on their strengths and struggles. One of the most important parts of this log is what their next steps will be. Having a growth mindset is knowing that abilities can be developed through commitment and hard work. AVID scholars are learning this weekly with Ms. Lopez.

Guardian's Guide: Guardian's Guide:

Thank you so much for all of the support you provide your AVID scholar with at home.

Here is how you can support your AVID scholar at home:

  1. View your child's weekly learning log and tutorial request form. They should be able to articulate their point of confusion in class to you.
  2. Talk to your student about how they did on their Winter MAP in Math and ELA. Ask them if there is anything that they plan to do differently when they return in January to best help them meet their spring target.
  3. Enjoy everyday of their 6th grade year. It is going by so incredibly fast!

We hope you enjoy your holiday break! Happy New Year!
