FORESTS FOR WATERTOWN
July 2024
Our First Priority: PLANTING FESTIVAL
On Saturday, October 26th from 10am to 4pm, we'll plant about 900 baby trees. So our first priority is to sign up volunteers from all over Watertown. If the average person plants 6 baby trees, we'll need 150 volunteers total.
The forest could be shaped something like this, with a forest "hug" where an outdoor classroom could be. What does the community want?
Our Other First Priority: COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
DROP-BY SAT AUG 3rd Noon-4pm
Planning a community microforest requires hearing from the community. Drop in the Watertown Savings Bank Meeting Room (1st floor, pictured) – this won't be a lecture, it's an exchange of ideas.
SAVE THE DATE – Come for refreshments! Explore an assortment of table displays, where volunteers will answer questions and capture your ideas – What shape is best? How will folks make use of the forest? How can the site plans support those uses? What would make a great outdoor classroom? What would make the forest most accessible?
In the Press
Did you see Liza Ketchum's article in Watertown News? Watertown's First Miyawaki Forest to be Planted This Fall.

RSVPs are enabled for this event.
Help Wanted
We didn't hire a consulting firm, so we're investigating all the specifics ourselves, documenting what we learn together, and sharing everything online. These are a few areas where a little more help makes a big difference.
Fencing
Here's a rabbit hole: How do keep rabbits out without wrecking roots when the fence is removed in 3 years?
Web Work
Volunteers are making our website, where we plan to share our forest experience, tree lists, soil preparation, etc.
Documentation
Capture the forest activities – such as students pacing off the circle of YardArt stepping stones.
