Principal's Message
Although it may be dreary outside, it's bright and cheerful indoors at Hallinan. I enjoy walking the halls and visiting classrooms, seeing your children learning and exploring. We're all getting back into our groove! We continue to empower PERSEVERANCE this month as we study, create and share. Students in first grade read and wrote about Martin Luther King Jr; students in 3rd grade made a large portrait by fashioning together squares that they completed individually; and, students in 5th grade reflected on 2021 artistically. (I've shared photos below.) I discussed perseverance with 2nd grader, Sienna this week. She read me a book that she had just finished writing called Cat Trouble - her 6th book! I asked her if she knew what perseverance means, and she replied, "keep trying even when things are hard". She nailed it! And, she told me that she was off to start writing book 7.
Equity continues to be a huge priority at Hallinan. Librarian Nicolle Landau has been reading beautiful books to our students during Library time each week. This week, she is reading Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall to Kindergarten through 3rd grade students and Flight for Freedom by Kristen Fulton to 4th and 5th grade students. Both books are about determination and I highly recommend them.
wishing you good health!
Melissa Griffiths

Kindergarten Counts
Upcoming Health Lessons
In 2015, the Oregon legislature passed SB 856, also known as Erin’s Law. Erin’s Law requires the development and adoption of child sexual abuse prevention programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in all Oregon public schools.
SB 856 mandates that all Oregon Public Schools provide:
- A minimum of 4 instructional sessions (equal to or greater than a standard class period) of sex abuse prevention instruction per year for grades kindergarten through 12
- Sexual abuse instruction that is integrated and part of required district comprehensive sexuality education plan and is aligned with state standards
- Instruction that is age appropriate, medically accurate, and is not shame or fear based
- Instruction that is culturally inclusive and is responsive to diverse students including race, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation
- A parental involvement component to inform parents about child sexual abuse topics
- A professional training component for administrators, teachers and other school personnel
Our teachers use the adopted Health Curriculum, The Great Body Shop, to teach the required Oregon Health Standards to our students. THE GREAT BODY SHOP is a comprehensive health education curriculum which is sequential, developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, and medically accurate. The lessons align with Oregon’s Health Education Standards and are embedded with social-emotional learning. Watch your classroom teacher's newsletter for upcoming topics. If you would like to review the health curriculum, please contact the school office. More information, including an opt-out form if needed, can be found on the District website.

Oregon State Assessment Opt-Out Form
Every year, Oregon students take assessments to meet federal requirements. The purpose of these assessments is to provide data that schools can use to ensure each and every child is on track and achieving learning goals.
State law requires us to inform you that a form is available from the State Department of Education that allows you to opt your child out of the math and English Language Arts assessments for the current school year. Should you wish to opt out your child, fill out the form and submit it to the main office at your child’s school. Please note the submission deadlines listed on the form. Meeting the deadline will help the school with planning and preparation. If you wish your child not to participate in the science assessment for grades 5, 8, and 11, submit this request in writing to the principal of your child's school.
If you would like to opt out your child from state testing, have questions or want more information about state assessments, please click on the form below or contact your child’s principal or teacher(s).
