7th Grade 日本語 update

As the weather gets warmer and Anthony gets closer to our annual Family Day celebration event, students in 7th grade Japanese are also exploring the idea of family and how we fit into society. All the students started by drafting a family tree, not from a lineage perspective but from a connection and closeless perspective. And since then, have been writing scripts and creating presentations to share things they find interesting about their close ones.

In this way, we are learning how to use a second language to communicate ideas and information that is important to us, through a lens that often values things in different ways than the cultures we were born into. The aim of this project is to learn how to expand ourselves into new cultures, and language norms without losing what are the most important factors of ourselves in the process. If you have time and your child is in Japanese, ask them if they have come up with a simple story to share and what they decided were the most important parts of that story.

What’s happening in 6th Grade Science?

Recently, many students have begun building their model rockets in anticipation of our Rocket Launch Field Trip on May 9th! They are sanding, gluing, and carefully cutting pieces and putting them together. 6th graders are also learning about solar and lunar eclipses, the International Space Station, life as a visitor in space, and comets and asteroids.

They are excited about finishing their rockets and spending the day outside launching them hundreds of feet into the air!

PTA Donated New Basketball Hoops! PTA Donated New Basketball Hoops!

Thanks to the generosity of the Anthony PTA, we purchased two basketball hoops to be used during recess on our north parking lot. These hoops are sturdy and portable, which will allow us to move them to storage during the summer.

They are already getting a lot of use and we anticipate that only growing as the weather warms, creating more opportunities for fresh air and wellness. The PTA also purchased a variety of new balls for both basketball and recess use.

Thanks so much to Marie Idelkope, President; Claire Bryan, Treasurer; and the PTA for being so willing to fund these active opportunities for our students!
