GUIDANCE LESSONS
Every year CCISD students participate in grade level specific guidance/prevention lessons. The State of Texas now requires parent consent for students to participate in lessons when they are related to the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and/or sex-trafficking.
If you would like for your child to attend our upcoming Anti-Victimization & Personal Safety presentation, please read the consent form linked, and fill out the form below. If you do not wish your student to participate, no further action is needed.
NOTE: 6th Grade Neighborhood students completed this in their Launch class last semester – they DO NOT need to do it twice.
6th Grade Pre-Connection (WAVE only – Neighborhood has already done their lesson).

The Parent Trap
A parent trap is “a situation in which parents are drawn to solve problems for their children or rescue them in a way that ultimately stifles growth opportunities.” We all want to help our children and give them everything we can but there is a difference between giving your kids what they want and assisting them in developing the skills they need to solve their own problems which gives them an advantage. According to the book Teaching Kids to Think, the clinical psychologists Dr. Darlene Sweetland and Dr. Ron Stolberg state, “When parents set everything up for their kids, they lose the chance to learn to do things on their own, which ultimately puts them at a disadvantage.”
The five most commons parent traps are:
· The Rescue Trap- Parents rescue their children from a problem.
· The Hurried Trap- Parents meet their children’s needs quickly, not requiring them to be patient and wait.
· The Pressure Trap- Parents push children forward too fast (other qualities of the pressure trap are FOMO- fear of missing out and “Keeping Up with the Joneses” syndrome.)
· The Giving Trap- Parents give children something without earning it.
· The Guilt Trap- Parents react impulsively because they feel guilty or unsure.
In the short term, it feels great to make your child instantly feel better, but down the road it will make everyone feel better if children learn to resolve their own issues. In middle school, it’s especially important to let them develop their own solutions. It gives children a sense of agency and control in their lives. Of course, parental feedback and support should also be included as they are problem solving because it provides children with a general framework for positive solutions. The book Teaching Kids to Think goes into much more detail. I enjoyed it and recommend it if you are interested in more strategies.

Athletics
Interested in playing high school sports?
Intermediate day is May 1 at 9 am. This is for any potential 9th grade athlete that would like to meet the high school coaches. Please see Coach Carmichael or Coach Bartel for a permission slip.
Do you have old soccer cleats that are taking up space in your closet? Boys' Athletics will take them for you and give them a new home. We are partnering with an organization called Genesis Hope to provide soccer cleats for students in need. Any size cleats, shin guards, old soccer socks, and old soccer jerseys are welcome to be donated. We are collecting items through May 9. Our goal is to raise 100 pairs of cleats for the organization. A donation box is set up in the big gym at LCI or can be dropped off at the front office for Coach Bartel. Thank you and GO BOBCATS!

Information from the Nurse:
Callout- Sunday, April 25, 2025
Good evening, Bobcat Families. This is Dr. K at LCI with a few reminders for this week. All students will take the Math STAAR test on Tuesday. Everyone should get a good night's sleep, eat breakfast, and come to school with fully charged laptop, laptop charger, and a book to read when they are done testing. Students may bring cracker style dust-free snacks and water. Please no pillows or blankets. Parents do not plan to drop off lunches and they cannot be delivered during or after testing. Students should pack a lunch or have money in their lunch accounts to purchase a sack lunch. A la carte items other than water will not be available. Let's finish strong, Bobcats!
If you get a chance, check out the Weekly Bobcat that went out Friday. It has some really good information about end of school activities like Field Trips, Awards, and our first ever LCI Bobcat Bash.
Have a great evening and Go, Bobcats!
Traffic Plan
- Please follow the yellow arrows around the perimeter of the big lot to drop-off/ pick-up your student. Students should only be dropped-off or picked-up alongside the building.
- Please do not park. Stay in your car in the pick-up/drop-off line. Students will not be allowed to walk out into the parking lot to meet you. This is to keep them safe.
- If you park in the small lot for any reason, please be aware that buses are lining from 3:00 – 3:25 and 4:00 – 4:20 and you will not be able to enter/leave the parking lot during those times. It is against the transportation code to pass a bus loading or unloading.
- Please do not drop-off/pick-up your student on Webster Street. It is dangerous and a violation of the traffic code.
