Learning to be Leaders: Habit 1

Each day, teachers engage students in social–emotional learning through our adopted Leader in Me program. A few weeks ago, I spoke to you about the five paradigm shifts and introduced the habits. Now, each week, I will focus specifically on one habit.

Starting in the new year (January 2026), we will highlight one habit each month. We will also be recognizing students who exemplify that month’s habit. We will kick this off with a growth mindset assembly on our first day back. Please read the information below to spark conversations with your child. Be sure to watch the video for a catchy song and a quick explanation about being proactive rather than reactive.

Habit 1: Be Proactive — even in the way you speak

Habit 1: Be Proactive® means we are in charge of ourselves. Using proactive language helps us practice positive self-talk and use kind words with others. Proactive language is “can-do,” encouraging, and affirming. It sounds like, “I can do it,” or “We can figure this out together.”

Reactive language, on the other hand, focuses on blame. It sounds like “You made me…” or “I have to…”

We all have a choice. Do we want to be proactive individuals or reactive ones?

Attendance Attendance

There are only 10 days of school left in December, and every single day matters. Let’s make these days count with 100% perfect attendance this month. We can do this, Eagles!

Please look at the attendance grid below and reflect on where your child currently falls as of December 10th:

  • Excellent Attendance: 0–3 absences

  • Proficient/Good Attendance: 4–6 absences

  • Concerning Attendance: 7 or more absences

If your child has more than 7 absences at this point in the year, it’s important to pause and reflect. Please consider these questions together:

  1. Why is my child absent so often?

  2. How much learning is my child missing when they are not in school?

  3. Can my child build and maintain strong friendships if they are frequently absent?

School attendance is not just about being present, it's about being connected, learning every day, and giving students the best chance to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Let’s work together to finish December strong!

PBISRP PBISRP

During Coffee with the Principal, we watched the video linked below. If you weren’t able to attend, the video includes many helpful tips and strategies for supporting your child at home.

De-escalation and restorative practices are integral components of LAUSD’s Every School Safe training modules, designed for students, parents/caregivers, and staff. These practices enhance the learning environment and support student well-being by improving relationships, reducing conflict, and promoting accountability and growth. Together, they help create a positive and supportive school culture.

The video is organized into three sections:

  • Introduction to Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Restorative Practices

  • De-escalation strategies

  • The use of the Restorative Rainbow/Rounds
